Made in Germany | World Trade - Shipowners feel the effects of the financial crisis
And the banks are reluctant to give securities. Trade is slowly creaking to a halt for lack of cash. But major transport doesn't work without securities. Dealers need securities so that they can make advance payments when they want to buy and ship freight. They only get paid when a sale is made. If dealers have nothing to ship, shipowners have nothing to ship. And cutbacks in the car industry for example, are also causing them problems. According to the association of Hamburg ship brokers and agents, profit margins for a ship with 2,500 standard containers have fallen by more than fifty percent since the start of the year. And Peter Krämer, managing director of the 'Marine Service Group', a major international shipper, has seen a dramatic collapse in profits. Dan Hirschfeld and Philipp Bilsky looked round the port of Hamburg.

German industry leaders push for tougher trade policy towards China | DW News
The US and Chinese governments are currently in negotiations to resolve the US-China trade dispute. Western nations are meanwhile hoping a resolution could lead to easier access to the lucrative Chinese consumer market, which has largely remained out of reach. Germany's influential BDI industry association has now called on the European Union to adopt a tougher policy towards China on this issue. They accuse the burgeoning economic super power of using unscrupulous tatics to increase its econimic might and warn that Germany and the West must do more if they don't want to lose their competitive edge on world markets. Germany and China push free trade in wake of US tariffs
(9 Jul 2018) German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang stressed their commitment to a multilateral trade system on Monday in the wake of Washington's decision to impose widespread tariffs, saying it was to everyone's benefit. Speaking in Berlin after the two countries signed deals worth 20 billion euros (23.6 billion US dollars), Li told reporters the projects demonstrated how nations could work together. "Free trade plays a strong leading role for both sides and for the world economy," Li said through an interpreter in the Berlin chancellery. On Friday, US President Donald Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on 34 billion US dollars worth of Chinese goods in response to complaints Beijing steals or pressuring companies to hand over technology. China announced retaliatory tariffs on a similar amount of US goods. Trump has also imposed tariffs on aluminum and steel imports that include the European Union, and has threatened additional tariffs on products like automobiles, singling out Germany in particular. Germanys Export strength under fire | Made in Germany

The deceptive promise of free trade | DW Documentary
Global trade is a hot topic of the G7 summit in Canada. Is free trade truly free - and fair? What roles do US President Trump, economic powerhouse China, and the EU play in global trade? When it comes to global trade, it would seem that trickery, threats and deception are the order of the day - yet all this takes place largely beyond the reach of the public eye. Donald Trump has made "America First” his agenda and rallying cry. Along with aiming sharp criticism at global export champion Germany, Trump has also introduced punitive tariffs and warned of further measures. Will this fresh wave of protectionism lead to economic isolationism and threaten global free trade? And what about those for whom free trade’s promise of prosperity increasingly rings hollow? Around the world, many people have come to regard themselves as the losers of globalization. If the true winners of free trade and globalization are not ordinary citizens, has the time come to revise the liberal orthodoxy of free trade? This documentary visits Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Cameroon to explore these issues by way of some everyday examples, including the trade in onions, floor tiles, and bicycles. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Germany: Maas, China FM defend free trade just before US tariff move
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi stressed the importance of 'multilateral' global free trade in Berlin on Thursday, moments before the United States announced restrictions on imports from its allies. Washington has put tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico, prompting a response from Brussels. "China and Germany are both supporters of a multipolar world. We both want to maintain the liberal world trade system. It is not in China's interest that the European member states are drifting apart. We don't want to divide Europe," Wang said. For his part, Mass was asked about the hoaxed murder of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, to which he answered: "Obviously this raises a lot of questions and honestly said, the information I have so far is not adequate. I do expect, when I am in Kiev tonight, that I will get the necessary information to make up my own opinion on this." But in the next days we will see much lower prices." 10. Close-up of graph 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Dirk Mueller, trader for MWB Fair Trade: "The mood is very tense, and everyone has only had a few hours of sleep tonight. We have a finance crisis and a world crisis twenty-four hours a day, with only a few hours of sleep in between, so everyone is in tension at the moment." 12. Mid of traders working at computers 13. Close-up of trader 14. Mid of trading floor, revolving column in foreground 15. Wide of trading floor STORYLINE: Germany's benchmark DAX market fell 4.8 percent in early trade Wednesday as economic gloom prompted companies to cut production, pare back outlooks and lay off employees, and investors put funds into more secure investments. Financial sector losers included Deutsche Bank AG, down more than 12 percent, Allianz SE down more than 13 percent and Deutsche Postbank AG down more than 6 percent. Industrial conglomerate Siemens AG fell more than 16 percent, and chemical maker BASF fell more than 13 percent as investors anticipated a global decline in demand. The only gainers on the blue-chip index were Europe's largest car maker, Volkswagen AG, up nearly 2 percent and software maker SAP, up 1 percent. Volkswagen said Tuesday it was not planning any production slowdowns or layoffs, unlike most of its European competitors, while SAP said Monday it had seen a steep drop in demand in the last weeks of September. Dirk Mueller, a trader for MWB Fair Trade said brokers were expecting the market to drop even further in the coming days but were praying for a stabilisation at around 5-thousand. Mueller said the mood was very tense and few traders get much sleep in what he described as a 24 hour world financial crisis. China's big interest in German companies | DW Documentary
China’s economy is growing and Chinese investors are attracting German companies like never before. The focus is on know-how and technology “Made in Germany”. China still has a lot of growth potential in many sectors and the leaders in Beijing hope their "Made in China 2025" scheme will soon see more industries leading the global markets. To expedite the process, the state is providing Chinese companies the capital to buy up firms abroad. More and more German companies are being taken over by Chinese investors. In 2016 alone, more than ten billion euros for takeovers and company investments went from China to Germany. Investors are mainly after access to the German market, German technology and German know-how. One recent example: the Truking Group’s takeover of Romaco, a supplier of packaging and processing technology. "We trust that we will catch up with our bigger competitors and one day overtake them," a proud Truking chairman told the Karlsruhe workforce. This report shows how unrelenting the investment offensive from China is and how it is all part of a masterplan. But while many entrepreneurs see the Chinese shopping tour in a positive light because it is bringing fresh capital and new prospects into companies, Jost Wübbeke from the Mercator Institute of China Studies warns: "The share of investments driven by state participation is increasing. The long-term objective is to replace foreign products with Chinese ones." One thing is certain: The vast differences between the respective economic and legal systems will present German entrepreneurs and German politicians with a huge challenge. Are business and politics prepared for the “hungry dragon”? _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Trade War and Real Armies | This Week in Germany
The European Union and the United States are at war! Don’t worry, it’s not a literal shooting war, but as of last Friday, they are in a trade war. At the start of the month, the U.S. put tariffs on steel and aluminum made in the EU. It also hit Canada and Mexico with tariffs. On June 22, the EU struck back. Its list of American-made items it placed tariffs on looks like they sat down and came up with the first half a dozen stereotypically American products they could think of: for example, Kentucky bourbon, Harley-Davidson motorbikes and denim jeans. Why does it matter if American bourbon is a bit more expensive in the EU—especially since we can just buy scotch? Trade wars can start small but then easily spiral. Already U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to place a 20 percent tariff on European cars. The Bible has a lot to say about trade war. I wrote about this in more detail in my article “Spiraling Into Trade War,” in the May-June issue of the Trumpet magazine. I think the U.S. could have a lot of short-term success. Germany is dependent on selling its goods to America. This gives the U.S. a lot of leverage. But in the longer term, the Bible warns about the dangers of a trade war. God says that He is at the core of America’s economic success and warns the nation that He will take that away if it does not obey Him. Isaiah 23 warns of a “mart of nations” dominated by Europe and China—both of which are in this current trade war with the U.S. Other scriptures make clear that these powers will cut off America from global trade. For more information, please read “Spiraling Into Trade War.” Developments in Europe German Chancellor Angela Merkel continues to fight for her political life. Sixteen European countries met over the weekend to discuss migration. There was a strong push toward setting up centers for migrants in North Africa and sending more there. The United Nations’ refugee agency has already offered to set up these facilities, according to a confidential letter seen by the EU Observer. Other proposals call for a beefed-up EU border force, which would intercept and presumably detain and return incoming refugees. It’s not clear if this will be enough to save Ms. Merkel. These are long-term solutions, and she has less than a week. But they will draw Europe deeper into Africa. The Bible forecasts a clash between Europe and radical Islam and warns that this clash will include North Africa. (You can read more about this in our free booklet The King of the South.) For such a clash, Europe needs a united military, which it is currently working on. There are quite a few different plans for a combined European military, with another one established just this week. Nine European countries signed a letter of intent to create a joint military intervention force. Its aim is to deploy quickly in times of crisis. It was signed by France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Estonia, Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom. The UK intends to take part in this plan, even if it leaves the EU. I don’t know where this specific project is going. There are, however, quite a few initiatives now where smaller groups of nations cooperate militarily. Revelation 17 describes 10 national leaders giving their “power and strength” to an overall power. This is why we watch what is going on in Europe so closely. A 10-nation united military power is forming in Europe. You can read more about that in our article “Why the Trumpet Watches Europe’s Push Toward a Unified Military.” And finally, we can’t discuss the news this week in Germany without mentioning Germany’s stunning World Cup defeat. Last year’s champions failed to make it out of the group stage after a humiliating loss to South Korea on Wednesday. It’s the first time since 1938 that Germany has gone out in the first round. Sports news generally doesn’t affect world news, and that is still true in this case. But it will certainly add to the general feeling of discouragement in Germany right now—that the wheels are coming off everywhere. Visit https://www.theTrumpet.com/
