France Telecom mobilising managers after suicides

(14 Sep 2009) SHOTLIST 1. Tilt down from top floor of office building where France Telecom employee worked and committed suicide to street 2. Mid of open window 3. Mid of employees entering the Orange Business Service (Orange is a subsidiary of France Telecom) building 4. Mid of Barbara Dalibard approaching journalists 5. SOUNDBITE (French) Barbara Dalibard, Chief executive Orange Business Services: "She (the female employee who committed suicide) dealt with the mobile service, and she hadn't changed her job, but we had announced to her on Friday that her manager was going to change following the redistribution of tasks between the different managers. Some had more work than others. And so it seems that this news destabilised her. There you go, but I think you have to regard it in a larger context." 6. Cutaway office building where France Telecom employee worked and committed suicide 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Barbara Dalibard, Chief executive Orange Business Services: "We have already launched some actions, for instance, to increase the number of HR people with the employees to make sure that the social workers also are increasing. We will launch also some discussions with the trade unions about stress and making sure that we capture all the weak signals." 8. Mid of various French newspapers and their coverage of the story 9. Pan of Le Figaro newspaper with headline reading (in French) "France Telecom faces malaise of its employees" and accompanying photograph 10. SOUNDBITE (French) Sebastian Crozier, CFE-CGC union delegate to France Telecom: "The closing of workplaces, the changing of occupations, the reorganisation of managerial changes is incessant. It automatically creates pressure for the workers that is hardly bearable." 12. Wide of Christophe Dejours, psychoanalyst and author of "Suicide at Work: What to do?" 13. SOUNDBITE (French) Christophe Dejours, psychoanalyst and author of "Suicide at Work: What to do?" "There is too much pressure, but it's not just a question of pressure. It's a question that concerns in greater depth the organisation of work in general which has been greatly transformed by the introduction of a style of management, notably the method of evaluation, individual evaluation of performances." 14. Tilt up on headquarters of France Telecom, in Paris 15. Mid of main entrance to France Telecom headquarters, logos of France Telecom and Orange visible 16. Close of logos of France Telecom and Orange Close up on STORYLINE: France Telecom was mobilising all 20-thousand of its managers on Monday in an effort to respond to a string of 23 employee suicides that unions blame partly on layoffs and restructuring at the telecommunications giant. The company's head of human resources held a conference call with all of France Telecom's managers in response to the latest suicide, the 23rd by a France Telecom employee since February 2008. Following the conference call, France Telecom was to hold a moment of silence in honour of those who took their own lives. The latest suicide, and the one to spark top-level government concern, was that of a 32-year-old woman who threw herself out a fourth-floor window of her office building in northwest Paris on Friday. The woman worked in the debt-collection service of Orange and had been involved in discussions on restructuring services. "We had announced to her on Friday that her manager was going to change following the redistribution of tasks between the different managers. Some had more work than others. And so it seems that this news destabilised her," Barbara Dalibard, the chief executive at Orange Business Services told reporters on Monday. According to Le Monde, the management had asked him to improve his behaviour. Major challenges for telecom industry in Saudi Arabia

04:10
Dr. Khaled Biyari, Group CEO of STC talks about the three major challenges for in the telecom sector. There are a lot of challenges in the telecom industry. What do you see as three major challenges in the sector, and for STC specifically? There are many challenges as the telecom industry is going through a major transformation as a response to disruptive technologies in how customers are getting their services. The major challenges that face the whole telecom industry are, I would say, the regulatory framework, human resources, and investments. The regulatory framework is the most important challenge. How do you deal with such issues, and how do you ensure that proper frequencies are located to cater to the incredible demand that is happening on the mobile network? We are a highly regulated industry, while the digital players are not regulated, at all. If the digital players are providing services directly to the customer without regulation, then that creates a disruption in the model. As far as incumbent operators who have inherited a large numbers of employees, if the aim is to become a digitally-enabled organization and investing in cloud services, then there is a need for a new skill set that is not typically available in conventional telecom companies. http://www.marcopolis.net/three-major-challenges-in-the-telecom-sector-in-saudi-arabia.htm

Telecom Expense Management | Analysing Big Data

04:21
Ben Mendoza, MDSL CEO and Founder, talks about how MDSL's telecom expense management solution - TEM Vision - helps analyse big data in telecoms. For more information visit www.MDSL.com Hello, I’m Ben Mendoza, CEO and founder of MDSL. Thank you for taking the time to watch my first video blog in which I’m going to discuss a popular topic; big data. The term big data describes the deluge of inbound data that companies are now facing on a daily basis, but big data itself is not new. The seemingly recent interest and activity around the subject is mainly due to the fact that today, with the latest technologies and advances in computing power, there are better ways to collect, store, process and analyse it than have ever been available previously - and businesses have realised that it is the ability to analyse big data that really releases its full power and value. In our business, big data comes from the world of telecoms. Employees usually have at least one connected mobile device, a smart phone or similar, and the unanimous opinion is that the growth of “connected” devices of all types is set to continue unabated for the foreseeable future. Try to imagine the amount of telecoms data being generated by individuals and businesses every second of every day. This is truly big data. In its raw state it is not very meaningful so businesses are asking who is responsible for it, how can it be effectively managed and fully utilised? Data management on this scale is a complex process especially when large volumes of data come from multiple sources in different formats. This is the challenge that managers responsible for telecommunications now face as spending on fixed and mobile services continues to grow. The adoption of BYOD in the workplace has only intensified the management challenge as more employees bring their smartphones and tablets to work and add even more variety to the data. Because the data is vast, there is simply no way businesses could consider asking their human resources to process it. This is a job for powerful computing and specialist software. In this case of telecoms big data - a telecoms expenses management - or TEM - solution is the answer. In medium to large companies, the data flowing into a TEM solution each month may well include millions of individual call data records, requiring huge amounts of storage. As more and more machines become connected these data traffic volumes are set to increase exponentially. At MDSL we’ve created a product called TEM Vision designed specifically to give our customers the ability to release the power and value of their big telecoms data. As the name suggests, TEM Vision presents some really intuitive visualizations of the data and how trends have evolved over the days, months and years. It allows you to stand back and see the whole picture, providing a view on the data that is just not possible to get any other way. And once you are armed with this ability to mine your data and visualize it in such useful ways it becomes simple to spot anomalies, see where adjustments are needed and where, quite often, substantial savings can be made. Viewing data on a world map will highlight higher costs in certain geographies and allow you to drill down to analyse at office or street level. It’s our goal as a provider of international telecom expense management solutions to help every one of our clients realise efficiencies in their telecom expenditures quickly, easily and above all, cost effectively. Another example of how big data can be processed in a TEM solution is to validate that each of the millions of individual calls, made by employees, were actually billed at the rates that the business negotiated with its supplier - and not just some arbitrary rate that may have been applied to your bill. Without the right tools it is easy to miss simple mistakes buried in big data. I hope these real world examples have helped you gain some understanding of how the MDSL TEM solution and TEM Vision deals with big data and releases its potential through analytical processing and data visualizations. Your business is at a disadvantage without tools like TEM Vision. Looking ahead, MDSL is sponsoring a number of events at which I will further discuss the latest industry trends and how our expertise can really help businesses to meet the new challenges they represent. If you'd like to ask me a question about what I've discussed today, please feel free to leave me a comment below.
