What is MEDIA PLANNING? What does MEDIA PLANNING mean? MEDIA PLANNING meaning & explanation. Media planning is generally outsourced to a media agency and entails sourcing and selecting optimal media platforms for a client's brand or product to use. The job of media planning is to determine the best combination of media to achieve the marketing campaign objectives. In the process of planning, the media planner needs to answer questions such as: How many of the audience can be reached through the various media? On which media (and ad vehicles) should the ads be placed? How frequent should the ads be placed? How much money should be spent in each medium? Choosing which media or type of advertising to use can be especially challenging for small firms with limited budgets and know-how. Large-market television and newspapers are often too expensive for a company that services only a small area (although local newspapers can be used). Magazines, unless local, usually cover too much territory to be cost-efficient for a small firm, although some national publications offer regional or city editions.

A social media marketing plan is like a mini-marketing plan. Depending on whether or not you already have in place a company wide marketing plan in place will dictate the level and detail of your social media marketing plan. But even if you’re starting from scratch, a social media marketing plan is a great place to start to ensure you’ve got your bases covered and time spent on social won’t be time wasted. Step 1) Current Analysis – Where are you now? The first step is to identify what you’re already doing, and what platforms you’re on. From here you can decide where you want to go. Do you already have a few accounts set-up? Do they have customized headers and branding? Do you have any followers or “likes”? Step 2) Competitor Analysis – Where are they now? While it’s often a good idea to lead rather than follow, it’s still prudent to be aware of what the competition is doing. Making a list of competitors and their current social media usage can indicate 1 of 2 things. Step 3) Goals – Where would you like to be? Having goals is important to prevent 3 hour marathon Facebook sessions that provides little or no value. Is your goal to increase brand awareness? Drive traffic to your website? Build social authority? Step 4) Strategy – How are we going to do this? Given the goals set in the previous step, how are you going to achieve these? A few common social media strategies include: Listening, Engaging, Influencing and Contributing. Step 5) Target Market - Who’s going to listen? Knowing the details about your target market and the key statistics around which social media platforms they tend to use can help determine what to post, where to post, when, and how. Step 6) Implementation – It’s go time! When most people think social media, they think Facebook, maybe Instagram or Twitter, and possibly Pinterest. The truth is there are a ton of other related tools available under the header of social media that may, or may not, be suitable for your needs. But here’s the good news, you don’t need to use them all! In fact, you’re probably best to select only 1 or maybe 2 to start, and focus on doing them well. Determining which ones depend on your business, goals, and of course, your target market. Step 7) Monitoring – How are we doing? As Peter Drucker said, “what gets measured, gets managed” so this is a good opportunity to look back at our goals, see how we’re doing, and most importantly, see if we’re making any progress. Which is why a key part of having a social media marketing plan is to measure your performance and see how things are actually working out. The best and easiest way to do this is with something called a KPI, or key performance indicator. KPI’s are a marketing term that allow us to really identify what’s important, and then measure that. Step 8) Budgeting – How much are we going to spend? Having a social media marketing budget is an important part of the social media marketing plan because contrary to popular belief, social media in a business context isn’t free. There are costs involved with the time to set everything up, plan, and implement, as well as advanced options like monitoring, content creation, sharing, and increasingly important, promotion. Step 9) Return on Investment – How much did we make? Calculating a quantitative return on investment with social media can be a difficult task due to its largely qualitative results. It’s challenging after all to put an exact dollar amount on improved brand perception, increased brand awareness, or the number of customers reached or impressions gained through exposure from social media. Conclusion At the end of the day a good social media marketing plan is well worth the investment. Hey everyone, I'm Neil Patel, and today I'm going to share with you how you can stand out from the crowd with social media marketing. Tip #1: Leverage the new innovative channels out there. Facebook and Instagram are old. But you know what? On these social sites, they continually innovate. Who's Facebook trying to be? YouTube. So what does Facebook roll out? Facebook Watch. It's their version of showing live TV shows, just like YouTube. Facebook wants a slice of the action. If you post your video content to Facebook, they'll instantly give you a ton of views. Why? Because they want you to move all your video content over to Facebook. That's innovative, right? #2: Be transparent. The thing with marketing is that everyone sees it for what it is. Consumers these days see right through the gimmicks. So whatever you do, do you. But if you really want to stand out with social media marketing, be transparent. Lying and telling people that they're going to get results that they're not going to get, it's just going to make people not like you. Look at sites like smartpassiveincome.com run by Pat Flynn. Pat was an architect, and now he's just like, "Hey let me create a blog telling people and showing them "how I'm making money online "and let me even show 'em my numbers "and prove that these are my real stats." And people love it. It's all about being transparent, his marketing has taken off, and he's one of the most popular bloggers and even podcasters out there because he's transparent. And that's the cool part. By being transparent, you're gonna get a following of people being like, "Oh, cool, you're showing all of your amazing moments "and all your terrible moments." If you want to be transparent with your social media marketing leave a comment with your ideas and I'll tell you if it's going to work or if it won't. I've tested a lot of this stuff out, like on the Neil Patel blog; I shared my journey all the way from going from zero to a hundred thousand visitors a month. #3: Use videos. Look, you're watching me. You know the past few months I've been doing a ton of videos, I've been going to conferences, events, and you know what people have been saying? Neil, you have amazing content. I'm like, "Great you love my content. "What was the latest piece of content that you liked?" I'm just trying to get feedback on how I can improve. And they're like, "Oh, your video on X, Y, and Z topic." They're not talking about my podcasts; they're not talking about my blog content even though my blog content gets way more traffic. Everyone's talking about my video content. Why is that? It's because it's helping me build a deeper connection with you. Sure, there are lots of comments on my videos, but I also do that in my blog comments. Why isn't my blog growing as fast? People want videos; it's how they connect with one another. So, create videos. It's not about text-based content these days; it's not about audio-based content, if you want to stand out from the crowd it's all about videos. #4: Be a long-term thinker. Look at Gary Vaynerchuk; you think he's successful, right? He is. Did it happen overnight? No, it didn't. He had Wine Library TV before that, then he created his agency, then did the DailyVee, and eventually, yes, you're seeing him everywhere, but it took him a long time before he got to where he is. And the same with me. You think I'm an overnight success? No, I've been doing this for over 16 years. That's a long time. No, you don't have to put in 16 years like I am before you start seeing results and making money, but if you want to really succeed in the marketing world, you have to think of it as a three-plus year plan. Don't expect amazing things in the first six months; you'll see some traction. After the first year, you're going to start seeing growth. After the second year, things are going to start skyrocketing. After three years, assuming you're pushing hard every single week, then things are going to start blowing up. But, if you don't do it consistently you won't do well. It's all about the long game. Beet.TV contributor Ashley Swartz spoke to Chapman at the Beet.TV Leadership Summit on Digital Video Advertising in an RTB World about the increased interest from clients in real-time buying, how this growth is impacting strategy, and budgeting for video across TV and digital. "We donapos;t have to beg clients to talk about [RTB]. Theyapos;re interested in understanding what itapos;s about, so we help them understand the marketplace and what it really means," Chapman says. Not only are brands using real-time buying as another avenue to reach consumers, theyapos;re also able to use the data from such campaigns to inform their brand strategies. "We might learn there is a certain segment of the audience that either we didnapos;t know existed or played a secondary role, but is responding better to our campaign, so we try to balance and learn from that and bring it up the funnel to our targeting, segmentation work, and higher level strategic approaches," he explains.For now, the dollars flowing to digital video are still being carved from TV budgets, but agencies are eager to grow the overall pie by showing the efficacy of deploying video across screens, Chapman tells us. He adds that the plethora of data available to marketers and agencies has also changed how Mindshare approaches hiring employees.
