What is STOCK EXCHANGE? What does STOCK EXCHANGE mean? STOCK EXCHANGE meaning & explanation

02:38
What is STOCK EXCHANGE? What does STOCK EXCHANGE mean? STOCK EXCHANGE meaning - STOCK EXCHANGE definition - STOCK EXCHANGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A stock exchange or bourse is an exchange where stock brokers and traders can buy and/or sell stocks (also called shares), bonds, and other securities. Stock exchanges may also provide facilities for issue and redemption of securities and other financial instruments, and capital events including the payment of income and dividends. Securities traded on a stock exchange include stock issued by listed companies, unit trusts, derivatives, pooled investment products and bonds. Stock exchanges often function as "continuous auction" markets, with buyers and sellers consummating transactions at a central location, such as the floor of the exchange. To be able to trade a security on a certain stock exchange, it must be listed there. Usually, there is a central location at least for record keeping, but trade is increasingly less linked to such a physical place, as modern markets use electronic networks, which gives them advantages of increased speed and reduced cost of transactions. Trade on an exchange is restricted to brokers who are members of the exchange. In recent years, various other trading venues, such as electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems and "dark pools" have taken much of the trading activity away from traditional stock exchanges. The initial public offering of stocks and bonds to investors is by definition done in the primary market and subsequent trading is done in the secondary market. A stock exchange is often the most important component of a stock market. Supply and demand in stock markets are driven by various factors that, as in all free markets, affect the price of stocks (see stock valuation). There is usually no obligation for stock to be issued via the stock exchange itself, nor must stock be subsequently traded on the exchange. Such trading may be off exchange or over-the-counter. This is the usual way that derivatives and bonds are traded. Increasingly, stock exchanges are part of a global securities market.

What is a Market Maker?

01:58
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Market Maker” A broker-dealer who is prepared to buy or sell a specific security — such as a bond or at least one round lot of a stock — at a publicly quoted price, is called a market maker in that security. Other brokers buy or sell specific securities through market makers, who may maintain inventories of those securities. There is often more than one market maker in a particular security, and they bid against each other, helping to keep the marketplace liquid. The Stock Market and the corporate and municipal bond markets are market maker markets. In contrast, on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange there's a single specialist to handle transactions in each security. Market Makers must be compensated for the risk they take; what if he buys your shares in IBM then IBM's stock price begins to fall before a willing buyer has purchased the shares? To prevent this, the market maker maintains a spread on each stock he covers. The market maker may purchase your shares of IBM from you for $100 each the ask price and then offer to sell them to a buyer at $100.05 the bid price. The difference between the ask and bid price is only $.05, but by trading millions of shares a day, he's managed to pocket a significant chunk of change to offset his risk. In contrast to conventional brokers, marker makers assume a high level of risk because of the high number of units they hold their inventory. Market makers are entrusted with promoting market efficiency by keeping markets liquid. To ensure impartiality for the benefit of their clients, brokerage houses who act as market makers are legally required to separate their market making activities from their brokerage sales operations. What is short selling? Join our Fall Trading Contest and win $500 when you practice trading: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/register?utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=VideoLink&utm_campaign=FallContest Most people think of investing as buying a stock (or other asset) and making money when its price goes up - but it’s also possible to make a profit when a stock price goes down. This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. What is "Beta" [Stock Market Terms] + How to Use it for Trading Decisions

07:27
What is "Beta" [Stock Market Terms] + How to Use it for Trading Decisions ★ SUMMARY ★ In this week's episode what I'd like to do with you share with you What is Beta and How Can You Use Beta on the Stock Market Tables to make trading decisions or investing decisions for your personal portfolio. Knowing what Beta is First off before we even get into what is Beta more important question is why would you want to know this why? Why would you want to know what it's all about? Well the thing is, what beta really tells you, is it tells you the volatility of a certain stock or security. How big of those movement, how big not a direction but that how large those movements can be for a stock or security relative to a neutral level. What does all this mean in layman's terms or in simple terms? Applying Beta to your stock picks It means that if you're looking for a stable company, if you’re for looking for a stock that does not whipsaw around a lot, if you're looking for a stock that moves in a nice line fashion then you want a smaller beta. If you want a stock that moves around a lot quicker and has a higher potential to make you more money or has a higher potential to go to the upside quicker or go to the downside quicker, typically great for day trading as well, then you want a higher beta. An in-depth understanding of Beta in the stock market Let's look at beta in more in-depth. Basically, the stock market itself, the market itself has a beta of 1 so if we have the market as a beta of 1, this is how it moves. So let's just pretend that this angle in this volatility is one. Stocks that have a higher volatility will have a higher beta so they may have a beta of something like let's just say one point three and if you have a beta of 1.3, this means typically your 30% more volatile than the market. So that volatility maybe something more like this so that stock has a greater volatility as it's going up or down. Now for looking for lower betas, companies like Microsoft or proctor and Gamble, if you're looking for a beta of let's say 0.8, this would be 0.8%, that volatility might be something like this, it might be very small and it moves very slow. It very slow to the upside or the downside, so you’re little bit more stable and that's why when things are in a panic they sell off very big, people jump to the lower beta stocks, they jump to the ones that have more stability. On the other hand when things are going great they’ll jump into the higher beta names because that is what they want, they want a huge run to the upside they want the fastest stocks that are moving the quickest in the shortest amount of time. Although volume won't help intelligent investors learn the intrinsic value of a company, it can be used as a tool to help predict market behavior. Many times investors can be fooled into believing that the market price of a stock is determined by all the shareholders. This idea is false. When we look at the volume of a company on an given day, we can quickly get a sense of how many traders are actually determine the price of a stock when we compare this number to the shares outstanding. This ratio, volume/shares outstanding, provides a good idea how many traders are moving away from the company and how many are coming into the company. When the company trades at a very low volume, we can generally say that the shareholder agree with the market price. Likewise, if the volume is very high, we can generally say that shareholders disagree with the market price. In the video, we demonstrated this principal with Wells Fargo (WFC). When we looked at the historical market price for WFC, we learned that on the day where the volume was the highest in ten years, the market price was at an all time low. This idea of shareholders disagreeing with the market price when volume is relatively high is an important point that stock traders can use to their advantage. Always remember, volume can mean that the stock is over priced or underpriced. The peak or valley is for you to discern.

Stock Market Index | by Wall Street Survivor

What is a stock market index? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com An index, like the DOW, the S&P500 or the NASDAQ, is a sample of stocks that provide insight into the broader market. When someone says "the market is up 10 points today", they are referring to an index. By measuring the compilation of similar stocks instead of just one or two stocks, a stock index provides information about that particular market or segment. One of the most talked about and popular indexes is The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) which consists of 30 of the biggest companies in the U.S. Stock indices are typically related by some commonality: for example, the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 is an index that measures or tracks almost every publicly traded stock in the United States. The Morgan Stanley Biotech Index is a small index that follows the biotechnology market. Each stock index has a specific focus that can provide highly specific or very generalized information. Trading 101: What is a Dividend? When I first started to learn about the stock market, one of the first question I remember asking was, "what is a stock dividend?" I've come a long way since then; however, if you are new to the markets, perhaps you have no idea what a dividend is. Essentially it is simply just a "thank you" card from a company, with some cash. IPO Basics: What is an IPO (Initial Public Offering) Definition

04:59
Do your research before investing in IPO stocks to avoid getting in at the wrong time. IPO (Initial Public Offering) -The first time the stock is released to the public and is available for purchase The Problem With IPOs: -The stock market is based on future expected growth -IPOs need time to set up -Preferred shareholders typically sell their shares as soon as the IPO comes out, which causes the stock to go down -Sometimes preferred shareholders are required to hold their shares for 60-90 days, the stock can decrease at this time instead of dropping initially. -As time go on, more shareholders can sell their stock. You need to read the find print to find out when this happens. -Let the charts set up, give them time and do not hurry -Don't jump into things too quickly, IPOs should be avoided initially -Understand why you are buying the stock. Don't just purchase it because it's a company you use (e.g. Zynga or Groupon) -A better time to get in is after the stock has decreased over a period of time and begins to go back up. You don't need to get in right away. Example: -Facebook (FB) -Everyone expected FB to go way up, but it went very low because preferred shareholders sold their shares right away ★ SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE: ★ http://bit.ly/addtradersfly ★ ABOUT TRADERSFLY ★ TradersFly is a place where I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience about the stock market, trading, and investing. What is TRADING HALT? What does TRADING HALT mean? TRADING HALT meaning, definition & explanation

04:01
What is TRADING HALT? What does TRADING HALT mean? TRADING HALT meaning - TRADING HALT definition - TRADING HALT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A trading halt occurs in the U.S. when a stock exchange stops trading on a specific security for a certain time period. The halt, which can happen a few times a day per security if FINRA deems it, usually lasts for one hour, but is not limited to that. Trading halts can happen any time of day. The listed company is supposed to call the exchange where it is listed, 10 minutes prior to any material news that they are releasing, in order for the exchange to halt the stock before the news is released. The first 5 minutes of a halt is for "news pending" before any information is released that could affect a stock significantly, also known as the "5 minute window". Trading halts usually occur when a publicly traded company is going to release significant news about itself. The halt in trading for the affected security gives investors time to review the news and assess its impact. Another situation in which a trading halt might occur is when the exchange is uncertain "whether the security continues to meet the market’s listing standards." Note, there are also "trading pauses", which are defined as, under NASDAQ, "if a security is subject to a Trading Pause, the Pause Threshold Price field will contain the reference threshold price that deviates 10% from a print on the Consolidated Tape that is last sale eligible as compared to every print in that security on a rolling five (5) minute basis". Both of the reasons mentioned above are "regulatory" trading halts and are implemented on many major stock exchanges (for example, the American Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and New York Stock Exchange). When a United States exchange enacts a regulatory halt for a security, other U.S. exchanges that also trade the security will honor the halt. The NASDAQ and other exchanges currently use 11 codes to specify in more detail why trading has been halted for a security. The Over The Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB) currently uses 5 codes. A "non-regulatory" trading halt occurs if "significant order imbalance between buyers and sellers in a security" exist. (The NASDAQ stock exchange does not implement non-regulatory trading halts.) Before trading resumes, market specialists must determine an appropriate price range in which the security can trade. Unlike regulatory halts, other U.S. exchanges do not always stop trading a security affected by the non-regulatory halt. NASDAQ OMX (owner of the NASDAQ stock market) displays current trading halts for the NASDAQ, New York Stock Exchange, and the American Stock Exchange, along with a rolling 21-day history. The OTCBB maintains its own trading halt list and a rolling 6-month history. A trading suspension occurs when the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stops trading for a specific security because of "serious questions ... about a company’s assets, operations, or other financial information." Note that in this case, it is the SEC — not the exchange — stopping the security from being traded. On its web site, the SEC maintains a list of trading suspensions going back to 1995. Trading curbs stop trading for an entire exchange when the market has experienced a drop (or several drops) in value.

BSE vs NSE - Which Stock Exchange is Better for Trading?

05:03
In this session, VRD Sir explains which stock exchange is better for retail traders for trading and why. Visit https://www.vrdnation.com/ for our courses. TRANSCRIPT ------------------------------------ As you know, BSE and NSE are the two biggest stock exchanges in India. There are lot more exchanges, but they are insignificant in terms of size. First, let’s get some facts about these two exchanges • BSE was established back in 1875! NSE is a relatively new exchange • BSE is Asia’s oldest stock exchange; in case you’re wondering which is world’s oldest that would be Amsterdam Stock Exchange. • BSE has over 5000 listed companies and NSE has about 2000 • BSE is a publicly listed company whereas NSE is still a privately held company. It’s coming with an IPO rather soon. • These are their respective official websites It’s important to remember that they both operate under SEBI’s guidelines. Ever since NSE was established, there has been a fierce battle between the two to attract more trading volume. After all, the more trading on the exchange, the more money they make. Let’s see who is wining the battle for attracting traders like you and me. Round 1: Liquidity Liquidity is the mother’s milk for traders. After all, higher liquidity means tighter spreads, lower slippages and ease of entry and exit in the trades. Liquidity is especially important for intraday and swing trades. So, let’s check turnover of the two exchanges. Turnover refers to the value of the shares traded during a certain period. Measured in rupees, of course. Turnover is a direct reflection of liquidity on that exchange. Higher turnover means that more traders are trading on the exchange. This is the comparison of BSE and NSE’s turnover for past 3 years. The blue bars are for NSE and red one sfor BSE. It should be obvious from this that NSE clearly has much higher turnover and BSE has not been able to catch up. Putting simply, NSE has the lion’s share in the cash turnover. Meaning much more traders are buying and selling shares at NSE than BSE. Let’s take a specific stock and see what it all means. We’ll go with ICICI Bank. On 3rd July 2018, about 5 lakh shares were traded on BSE and about twice as much on NSE. It means that if you were trading shares of ICICI bank, you had better spreads, lower slippages and easier entry and exits in the trade. So it should be obvious that NSE clearly wins the first round for liquidity in the cash market. Now, let’s go to Round 2: Trading in derivatives. Liquidity is even more critical in derivatives. Without liquidity, a derivatives trader is a dead man. Just like in the cash segment, NSE is the most liquid exchange for derivatives– that is futures and options. In fact, NSE is the undisputed leader. So much so that BSE doesn’t even come close. Look at that – 90% of the trading in derivatives happen on NSE. We’ll take an example ..let’s say you want to trade derivatives of India’s biggest private sector bank: HDFC Bank. Here’s the volume on NSE..I know it’s kind of hard to read. Now, let’s see BSE. Hm…nothing ! Yes, zero, not a single derivative traded on the BSE exchange. You have no other option but to trade at NSE. Also, when it comes to trading in indices, NIFTY and Bank Nifty are the most liquid scripts and they both trade on NSE. It’s safe to say NSE won the second round too! Round 3: we will compare the variety of stocks As you know, BSE has over 5000 stocks and NSE has fewer than 2000. Why is that. May be because NSE is too stringent about its listing and reporting norms. BSE is a little too eager to get even the low-quality stocks. What does it mean for us? Well, for an intraday or swing trader, every stock that is tradable is listed on both the exchanges. So it doesn’t really matter. However, it’s different for investors. Investors, especially those interested in microcaps, have much more choices available on BSE than NSE. From that stand point, BSE wins this round. What about the cost of trading on the exchanges? Well, they are more or less similar and the difference is insignificant. Overall, I think NSE clearly wins this battle because It has better liquidity in the cash market It is better for retail traders, especially day traders. And because it is the only viable option when it comes to derivatives trading. What does it all mean for you? If you are an intraday trader, trade on NSE

What is the difference between a limit and market order?

06:22
What is the difference between a limit and market order? ★ SUMMARY ★ Market order Think of a market order as paying the market price when buying or really selling a stock, meaning you would pay whatever price is necessary to get your shares. Limit order When it comes to a limit order, you get to specify the price you want to pay for the stock. You get favorable pricing, but you may not get filled with your order if your price is not met. When should you use market order or limit order? When do you use one of the other? Well, market order is great if you need to get into a stock right away, really fast, typically day trading, and you’re trading liquid stocks.
