A tip on how to solve a simple indices question.

Standard form, scientific notation and standard index form all mean the same thing.
They are a very useful way of writing really big numbers and really small numbers. The first number must always be more than 1 and less than 10. Then the X10 number has a power. For large numbers, the power is 2 or more. For really small numbers, the power will be a negative number.
In this video we look at how to write a normal number into standard form, and how to write standard form back into a normal number.

In this video you will shown how to change a standard index form number into an ordinary number. First decide, if the number is large (positive power), or small (negative power). For large numbers move the decimal point to the right as you are multiplying by 10, and for small number move the decimal point to the left as you are dividing by 10. The power will tell you how many places to move the decimal point. Fill the gaps in with zero's.
So in the first example you need to convert 3.9 x 10^5 to an ordinary number. Do this by moving the decimal 5 place right. This gives 390,000. In example 3 you need to change 5.1 x 10^-6 into standard index form. Do this by moving the decimal point 6 places left.
This gives a final answer of 0.0000051.
Although, you shouldn't be taught to move the decimal point, this is the quickest and most efficient way of converting standard form number into normal number.

This video will show you how to convert standard index form numbers with negative powers back into normal numbers. So in example 1, you need to convert 7.2 x 10^-3 back to a normal number. The negative power actually means that you are dividing by 10. So 7.2 x 10-3 = 7.2/10^3. So you need to move the digits 3 place to the right as you are dividing by 10^3 (1000). You can do this using columns, make sure you don't move the decimal point.

Here you will be shown a short video on how to write down small numbers (numbers between 0 and 1) in standard form. You can basically use the same method for writing down large numbers in standard form but you must make the power negative. The negative power means that the first number is being divided by 10 to give the original number!
