Capital in the Twenty-First Century

01:30:03
The French economist Thomas Piketty (Paris School of Economics) discussed his new book, Capital in the Twenty-First Century at the Graduate Center. In this landmark work, Piketty argues that the main driver of inequality—the tendency of returns on capital to exceed the rate of economic growth—threatens to generate extreme inequalities that stir discontent and undermine democratic values. He calls for political action and policy intervention. Joseph Stiglitz (Columbia University), Paul Krugman (Princeton University), and Steven Durlauf (University of Wisconsin--Madison) participated in a panel moderated by LIS Senior Scholar Branko Milanovic. The event was introduced by LIS Director Janet Gornick, professor of political science and sociology at the Graduate Center. Cosponsored by the Luxembourg Income Study Center and the Advanced Research Collaborative.

Eighth Annual Emerging Markets Forum Business Powering Africa Forward

06:22:02
Presented by the Center for Global Business, sponsored in-part by CIBER, a title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education, at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland The Smith School's Center for Global Business convenes its 8th Annual Emerging Markets Forum on the theme of doing business in Africa. Since 2010, this conference series has examined the rise of new economic powers, increased awareness about emerging markets, and disseminated information about how U.S. companies can best succeed there. One of the fastest growing economies in the world, Africa has many countries that have made diversification a priority. Opportunities abound for businesses that understand that trade, not aid, is the road to future prosperity. Expert speakers from business, academia and policy will discuss the opportunities as well as challenges of doing business in Africa, including: ● Which countries are reforming and growing fastest? ● Which sectors are the most promising (now and in the future)? ● What opportunities have drawn U.S. businesses to Africa? ● What challenges do they face, and how have they overcome these challenges?

Accessibility and Virtual Reality - Thomas Logan

01:25:56
Accessibility and Virtual Reality - A11yNYC - July 11 2017 https://www.meetup.com/A11yNYC/events/241116670/ Transcript: http://isoc-ny.org/a11ynyc/a11ynyc_jul2017.txt Software and hardware development of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technology is well underway in 2017. These three dimensional experiences provide exciting opportunities to move beyond the conventional patterns of human computer interaction. However, these opportunities also pose many unanswered accessibility challenges. I believe people of all abilities should be able to fully enjoy and participate in these experiences immediately. In this presentation I will highlight successful applications available in the VR/AR marketplace that illustrate accessibility best practices via custom solutions. I will also review popular VR/AR applications that currently fall short of accessibility guidelines. My presentation will focus on what can be achieved via the specification of various non-existent accessibility application programming interfaces (APIs) on the current dominant development platforms. I will also highlight practical considerations for the universal design of hardware interfaces that are involved in these experiences. Speaker Bio: Thomas Logan has spent the past fifteen years assisting organizations to create technology solutions that work for people with disabilities. He resides in Brooklyn where he is co-organizer of Accessibility NYC (http://meetup.com/a11ynyc).
