Center for Science of Information presents as part of our Weekly Seminar series: Assistant Professor Jennifer Neville Purdue University, Depts. of Computer Science & Statistics "Modeling Complex Social Networks: Challenges & Opportunities for Statistical Learning & Inference" Recorded Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Abstract: Recently there has been a surge of interest in methods for analyzing complex social networks: from communication networks, to friendship networks, to professional and organizational networks. The dependencies among linked entities in the networks present an opportunity to improve predictions about the properties of individuals, as birds of a feather do indeed flock together. For example, when deciding how to market a product to people in MySpace or Facebook, it may be helpful to consider whether a person's friends are likely to purchase the product. This talk will give an overview of the area, presenting a number of characteristics of social network data that differentiate it from traditional inference and learning settings, and outline the resulting opportunities for significantly improved inference and learning. We will discuss techniques for capitalizing on each of the opportunities in statistical models, and outline both methodological issues, statistical challenges, and potential modeling pathologies that are unique to network data.

Influence in Social Media Networks: Sinan Aral at TEDxColumbiaEngineering
Sinan Aral is an Assistant Professor and Microsoft Faculty Fellow at the NYU Stern School of Business. He studies how behavioral contagions spread through social networks -- from products to productivity to public health. His novel research on information and behavioral diffusion in massive networks is being applied to a variety of fields including epidemiology, innovation management, organizational performance and development economics. This research has won numerous awards including the Microsoft Faculty Fellowship (2010), the PopTech Science and Public Leaders Fellowship (2010), an NSF Early Career Development (CAREER) Award (2009), the IBM Faculty Award (2009), the ACM SIGMIS Best Dissertation Award (2007), and four Best Paper Awards at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). Sinan has been a Fulbright Scholar, serves as Chief Scientist of SocialAmp, a social commerce company that enables targeting and peer referral in social media networks, and is currently an organizer of the Workshop on Information in Networks (WIN): http://www.winworkshop.net. C11: Analyzing Social Media Systems
The goal of this course is to provide practical instructions for collecting and analyzing social media data. Course attendees will gain insights into how to collect, structure, and analyze data to create meaningful inferences out of the chaotic mess that is social media. We will use two data sources as examples (So.cl and Twitter) of either instrumenting your own system or using a public social media source. We will describe analyses using common tools (SPSS, NodeXL) or our custom Querying Human Activities (QHA) tool, which we provide for analysis of social media trends. Participants will walk away with sample data, sample analysis scripts, and access to our QHA system. Getting Started. First we will discuss how to operationalize social constructs from behavioral or conversational data, whether instrumenting your own system or collecting data from public systems such as Twitter. Processing Data. We will then describe how to collect, format, and clean your data for various forms of analysis, including usage analysis, social network analysis, and sentiment analysis. Analyzing Social Data. We will illustrate in detail using case studies the use of three tools — SPSS, NodeXL, and QHA — for usage analysis, network analysis, and content analysis. We will discuss common pitfalls in analyzing social media data and provide tips for avoiding them. This course is for social scientists or computer scientists with a basic understanding of data analysis, but are new to social media data. Shelly Farnham has a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Washington, with many years of experience analyzing behavioral and social networking data in social systems. Emre Kiciman has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University, experienced with data analysis in social networking, content analysis, and information retrieval. They are both currently researchers in Microsoft Research.

Maximizing the Spread of Influence in a Social Network
A social network - the graph of relationships and interactions within a group of individuals ΓÇô plays a fundamental role as a medium for the spread of information, ideas, and influence among its members. An idea or innovation will appear - for example, the use of cell phones among college students, the adoption of a new drug within the medical profession, or the rise of a political movement in an unstable society - and it can either die out quickly or make significant inroads into the population. The resulting collective behavior of individuals in a social network has a long history of study in sociology. Recently, motivated by applications to word-of-mouth marketing, Domingos and Richardson proposed the following optimization problem: allocate a given advertising budget so as to maximize the (expected) number of individuals who will have adopted a given product or behavior. In this talk, we will investigate this question under the mathematical models of influence studied by sociologists. We present and analyze a simple approximation algorithm, and show that it guarantees to reach at least a 1-1/e (roughly 63) fraction of what the optimal solution can achieve, under many quite general models. In addition, we experimentally validate our algorithm, comparing it to several widely used heuristics on a data set consisting of collaborations among scientists. ABSTRACT Scientific American placed Professor Eshel Ben-Jacob and Dr. Itay Baruchi's creation of a type of organic memory chip on its list of the year's 50 most significant scientific discoveries in 2007. For the last decade, he has pioneered the field of Systems Neuroscience, focusing first on investigations of living neural networks outside the brain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshel_Ben-Jacob Learning from Bacteria about Information Processing Bacteria, the first and most fundamental of all organisms, lead rich social life in complex hierarchical communities. Collectively, they gather information from the environment, learn from past experience, and make decisions. Bacteria do not store genetically all the information required to respond efficiently to all possible environmental conditions. Instead, to solve new encountered problems (challenges) posed by the environment, they first assess the problem via collective sensing, then recall stored information of past experience and finally execute distributed information processing of the 109-12 bacteria in the colony, thus turning the colony into super-brain. Super-brain, because the billions of bacteria in the colony use sophisticated communication strategies to link the intracellular computation networks of each bacterium (including signaling path ways of billions of molecules) into a network of networks. I will show illuminating movies of swarming intelligence of live bacteria in which they solve optimization problems for collective decision making that are beyond what we, human beings, can solve with our most powerful computers. I will discuss the special nature of bacteria computational principles in comparison to our Turing Algorithm computational principles, showing that we can learn from the bacteria about our brain, in particular about the crucial role of the neglected other side of the brain, distributed information processing of the astrocytes. Eshel Ben-Jacob is Professor of Physics of Complex Systems and holds the Maguy-Glass Chair in Physics at Tel Aviv University. He was an early leader in the study of bacterial colonies as the key to understanding larger biological systems. He maintains that the essence of cognition is rooted in the ability of bacteria to gather, measure, and process information, and to adapt in response. For the last decade, he has pioneered the field of Systems Neuroscience, focusing first on investigations of living neural networks outside the brain and later on analysis of actual brain activity. In 2007, Scientific American selected Ben-Jacob's invention, the first hybrid NeuroMemory Chip, as one of the 50 most important achievements in all fields of science and technology for that year. The NeuroMemory Chip entails imprinting multiple memories, based upon development of a novel, system-level analysis of neural network activity (inspired by concepts from statistical physics and quantum mechanics), ideas about distributed information processing (inspired by his research on collective behaviors of bacteria) and new experimental methods based on nanotechnology (carbon nanotubes). Prof. Ben-Jacob received his PhD in physics (1982) at Tel Aviv University, Israel. He served as Vice President of the Israel Physical Society (1999-2002), then as President of the Israel Physical Society (2002-2005), initiating the online magazine PhysicaPlus, the only Hebrew-English bilingual science magazine. The general principles he has uncovered have been examined in a wide range of disciplines, including their application to amoeboid navigation, bacterial colony competition, cell motility, epilepsy, gene networks, genome sequence of pattern-forming bacteria, network theory analysis of the immune system, neural networks, search, and stock market volatility and collapse. He has examined implications of bacterial collective intelligence for neurocomputing. His scientific findings have prompted studies of their implications for computing: using chemical "tweets" to communicate, millions of bacteria self-organize to form colonies that collaborate to feed and defend themselves, as in a sophisticated social network. The Mapping Online Publics project in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI) at Queensland University of Technology has developed a number of approaches to the study of short- and long-term Twitter publics, from analyses of the dynamics of ad hoc issue publics around natural disasters and political crises through the tracking of information flows and audience interests across mainstream and social media to the comprehensive mapping of the Australian Twittersphere. This presentation will outline the methodological approaches developed for this work, and reflect on the opportunities and challenges facing social media researchers. 2nd Part: "Robert Jäschke: Identifying and Analyzing Researchers on Twitter" For millions of users Twitter is an important communication platform, a social network, and a system for resource sharing. Likewise, scientists use Twitter to connect with other researchers, announce calls for papers, or share their thoughts. Filtering tweets, discovering other researchers, or finding relevant information on a topic of interest, however, is difficult since no directory of Twitter users with a scientific background exists. In this paper we present an approach to identify Twitter accounts of researchers and demonstrate its utility for the discipline of computer science. Based on a seed set of computer science conferences we collect relevant Twitter users which we can partially map to ground-truth data. The mapping is leveraged to learn a model for classifying the remaining users with high accuracy. To gain further insights into how Twitter is used by researchers, we perform an empirical analysis of the identified users and compare their age, popularity, influence, and social network. re:publica 2012 - Information Epidemics and Collective Action: Network Analysis Perspective
Large groups of people can drastically change their opinion, adopt a completely unexpected trend, come out to protest on a square, adopt a certain ideology, have an amazing time at a party, or start using a certain product on mass scale. While all these social phenomena are diverse, one thing in common is that they involve information dissemination that happens in a synchronized way, evoking a certain response from the population at once. In this lecture I will demonstrate how epidemic theories from network science can be used to study information contagion and trend/rumor propagation (so-called information cascades). We will use real examples from Facebook and Twitter (Russian protest movements and UK riots), as well as Gephi software to visualise the sample data. We will learn how successful campaigns (both in marketing, politics, as well as the social sphere) manage to become viral and to provoke a collective action on the side of participants. We will also see how trends, rumours and ideologies are generated and proliferated through social networks. We will also find out how information becomes viral and what one can do in order to increase the message's contagious potential. The session will be held by Dmitry Paranyushkin from Berlin-based Nodus Labs, a research organization specialized in using network analysis and complexity science to enhance our understanding of cognitive and social processes. He will also talk about building agent-based decision support systems for word-of-mouth programs.
