Until now, the cornerstone piece of my sales strategy is a comprehensive questionnaire that I send out to a potential client during the sales process. The assessment is a complete look at the business and asks probative questions that uncover in which areas is the business doing well and in which areas can the business improve and optimize right away. The sections of the questionnaire include the background of the owner, the background of the business, the past sales, the client base, and every traditional and online marketing pillar out there (SEO, PPC, email, social, affiliates, strategic partners, customer referrals, analytics, video, mobile marketing, competitive intelligence etc.) Do you have a process like this where a client fills out a questionnaire about their business? Why or why not. If you did have an effective assessment that helped the client gain clarity on their business and see your value to help them grow, where would you put in in your e-mail sales process? I said...I'm really glad to hear you found value in the 25k email campaign post. In regards to your question about questionnaire/assessment forms...yes I use them. I think they are very important. If at all possible, I suggest you ask the prospect to complete the form before the free consultation. Here is the simplest way I know how to do it: Have your follow-up sequence explain the benefits with each message leading to a questionnaire. Sample flow: Run ad -- free consult registration page -- 1st big benefit of your service (link to questionnaire) -- 2nd big benefit of your service (link to questionnaire) -- 3rd big benefit of your service (link to questionnaire) -- 4th big benefit of your service (link to questionnaire) -- 5th big benefit of your service (link to questionnaire) Each follow-up can be a video, blog post, or just a well-explained email. Transcript: Hello. Hey, in this video I'm specifically speaking to my owner/operators out there. And you know who you are. You know, the air conditioning and heating person, the pest control, the lawn care or maid service, manufacturer's rep kind of person. The owner/operator that's wondering whether or not you should hire a sales person or not. After all, you've been doing it all yourself for so many years. I used to be a business broker. I sold lots of businesses, helped a lot of people get into businesses. I specialized in the basically five million gross revenues or below; some much higher. And the difference between the much higher and the ones that weren't was always because of the sales people that they hired to do the work to get them more sales. So the challenges right now for many of you is that you have a business that you go to work to everyday, that you make the sales, that you do the administration and if you were to leave, somebody else would have to pay somebody to do exactly what you're doing. And in other words. you don't really have a business. You've got a good paying job. But it's not something that is salable. It's not something that you can pass to somebody else that shows them the same value that it has for you. The way to get it to that point to have more value than it is salable is by hiring the people to do the things so you can just do the administration. Because the administrative person, you can just trade with all day long. Someone says, I could just do the administration but you would have the system that follows. That system is a system of marketing, and a system of sales. And to do that, you need professional sales people. Therefore, you can go on vacation. You can go ahead and live and you have something to sell. The thing is, Michael Gerber who wrote "The E-Myth," he said, If your business isn't giving you more life, it's taking it away. A way for you to make it to give you more life is to let the sales people do the sales for you that you are doing yourself right now. Sometimes you just have to scare your prospects into buying something they need. Pest control and security companies know this and have used this knowledge to build huge industries. I'm sure you've seen the commercials with cockroaches crawling all over the kitchen. Or the single mom, home alone with her young children, as some creepy guys break into her house. The announcer chimes in, "Do you want this to happen to you?" Heck no. I'm picking up the phone right now and ordering so I can be safe. Fear of what's going to happen to you if you don't take action is an extremely powerful motivator. Regardless of what you're selling, if your product can help a company improve in a particular area and that company is currently not using your product, you have a prospect that stands to lose by not purchasing your product. Your job is to make sure they don't lose out. Let's say you sell network security software to small businesses. Small businesses are just as vulnerable to cyber threats as large businesses. And the consequences can be far worse. Small businesses often don't have the cushion large businesses do to recover. Your questions to this type of prospect might include: • Do you know 42.6% of all small businesses suffer from some type of security breach? • Did you know it takes a small business, on average, 17.5 business days to get up running again and fully recover from a security breach? How much revenue do you bring in on a daily basis? • What are you using now for network security? You are doing nothing dishonest or sneaky. Bad things happen to good companies. If you totally believe in your product, you never lie or mislead and you sell with integrity, using FUD is your responsibility. If it sometimes takes scaring one of your prospects into taking action in order to keep them from harm, then use FUD to close the deal. Sales Homework -- List three FUD questions you can ask prospects about your product. 1. 2. 3. Sales Managers -- FUD is a strategy that makes some sales reps uncomfortable. Let them see you use it on calls to help them feel more at ease. Then make sure they have their FUD questions ready for the right situation.
