Gender-sensitive Value chain Analysis - Visualisation impressions from a Training in the MENA-Region
2 international donor organisations, OXFAM-Quebec and GIZ with the support of Mesopartner, have started a journey in June 2011 to promote gender-sensitive value chain promotion in their regional Middle-East- and North Africa countries. Both international organisations support regional projects on women economic empowerment. They contracted mesopartner to design a Module on Gender-sensitive Value chain analysis (GSVC) and to provide trainings and consultancy on the implementation of this approach. GIZ and Oxfam-Quebec as driver of this initiative enabled mesopartner to work in an interdisciplinary team with gender and economic experts from the region. Thanks to the support from Dr. Fatemah Khafagy (Egypt), Lassaad Messaadi (Tunis) and Anke Kaulard (mesopartner associate) the team was able to deliver the first english and french seminar to 46 regional experts from 6 countries (Palestine, Lebanon, Marocco, Tunesia, Jordan, Egypt) in October 2011 in Amman/Jordan. The video provides some insights on the training style, visualisations, success factors for the GSVC approach as well as photo impressions. 

After these first trainings mesopartner will further develop the Module. The next plans from GIZ and Oxfam-Quebec is to to develop, with the support of mesopartner and the gender experts, a Training-of-Trainer manual and then to implement the approach in the Middle East- and North-African region.

Gadget Spam -- They threw mud at the wall and saw what sticks; from Samsung's point of view, this was a great trick since they have lower costs to manufacture. -- They can do experiments since Samsung itself is a producer of processors, displays, memory etc -- It doesn't hurt them to do experiments with new ideas since they have control over the supply chain. -- With all the experiments they did, they were able to a low end phone, a mid range phones, and of course, high end phones like the Galaxy S's and Galaxy Notes Cutting edge specs -- Samsung is known for putting the best components in their phones. -- Earlier this year, Galaxy S4 had a 5" 1080p screen, a quadcore Snapdragon 600 processor, a 13mp camera, wireless charging. -- All this was, more or less, the best the industry had to offer. -- Thats just one example. Galaxy S2, S3, Galaxy Note, Note 2, were all beast phones when they came out as well Consistent release schedule -- Samsung built consistent hype around their product launches and didn't keep people waiting cluelessly. -- We know that a flagship Galaxy S phone comes out in Spring and a Galaxy Note in Fall. -- With plenty of rumors and leaks, people know what to expect and when to expect it. This keeps their fans engaged. Like Apple fans. Consistent product design -- Its hard to confuse a Galaxy phone with any other phone even if you are not a tech geek. -- Being consistent with product design helped Samsung build a brand image. -- Some think its boring to have the same design tweeked every year like how iPhones are. -- But I, personally, think its what make random people ask "is that the new Galaxy" or "is that the new iPhone?" -- Companies like HTC don't always keep the same design principles and thats why there phones come and go. -- How many people really remember exactly what the HTC Thunderbolt looked like? Marketing -- The spent a whole ton promoting their Galaxy line up and even targeted iPhones with ads like "The next big thing is already here." -- They also did smaller campaigns bashing on Apple Maps and so on. -- Its not just their flagship phones that they promote. -- In Asia, every commercial break consists of at least one Samsung Ad promoting their Galaxy line up. This video will analyze Samsung company using a SWOT analysis. It will discuss the key Samsung strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that affect the company in 2018, which might help you get a better understanding about the Samsung and its business. The most important strength Samsung has is very high research and development (R&D) expenditure resulting in one of the strongest patent portfolios among technology companies. Innovation is crucial to succeeding in the technology sector. Usually, the more a business invests in R&D, the more innovations it creates. Samsung operates 34 R&D centers across the world. The company has spent US$14.857 billion on R&D in 2017, which was the 2nd largest amount spent in the world. Samsung’s high R&D spending has resulted in it developing the largest patent portfolio among its key rivals. As for the disadvantages, Samsung's major weakness is that it releases too many smartphone models. According to GSM Arena, Samsung released 21 new models in 2017, which is more than what HTC (10), LG (15) or Apple (only 3 new iPhones) have released. The company’s smartphone portfolio is extremely large and that brings its own drawbacks, the major ones being: increased costs of designing new models; complexity of supply chain; lower economies of scale and difficulty of marketing so many products to different consumer segments. Let’s move on to the opportunities and the key opportunity for Samsung is to introduce a separate low-end smartphone brand to counter the expansion of OPPO and Xiaomi smartphones. In order to compete with low-end smartphone vendors Samsung could introduce a cheap smartphone line and use a different approach for this ‘new’ brand to increase their market share in this segment. One of the threats that affect Samsung is that smartphones using Android OS are becoming a commodity, which could impact the company’s gross margins. Currently, all Samsung smartphones run on Google’s Android OS. The Android OS is used by 85% of the world’s smartphones. It is also becoming harder for smartphone manufacturers to differentiate through hardware as the components are becoming cheaper and even low-end smartphone manufacturers can offer smartphone models with similar quality hardware as Samsung’s. This makes Samsung phones very vulnerable to becoming a commodity, where there is little room for differentiating its products through hardware and no options to differentiate through software. These are the key Samsung SWOT strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
