BOOK REVIEW ROME I REGULATION Pocket Commentary Edited by Franco Ferrari SELLIER EUROPEAN LAW PUBLISHERS (SELP) NYU: Center for Transnational Litigation, Arbitration and Commercial Law ISBN: 978 3 86653 241 0 www.sellier.de A USEFUL FIRST REFERENCE TO THE ROME 1 REGULATION ON CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS -- BY AN EXPERT TEAM OF CONTRIBUTORS An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers For students (primarily graduates and undergraduates) and practitioners professionally involved in European Union law in general -- and in the area of conflict of laws in particular -- this handy pocket-sized but comprehensive and detailed text is quite a find. It is the second volume in the increasingly well known ‘selp’ series of Pocket Commentaries published by Sellier European Law Publishers. Bearing in mind the more than occasional abstruseness of European Union regulations, this is an excellent publishing initiative which is very handy for practitioners, especially international lawyers, to know about. This particular volume offers concise yet detailed and instructive commentary specifically on the Rome 1 Regulation. The twelve learned contributors, including the editor Franco Ferrari, are either expert practitioners with well-known international law firms, (Baker McKenzie for example), or distinguished academics from leading universities. Franco Ferrari, for instance, is Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Transnational Litigation, Arbitration and Commercial Law at New York University School of Law – and has also served as a Legal Officer at the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, International Trade Law Branch. Similar to other books in this series, this commentary is meant to provide ‘a first reference’ to a particular instrument; in this case, Rome 1. Just to get technical, Rome 1 is the Regulation (EC) No593/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 June 2008 on the law applicable to contractual obligations. Rome 1, in other words, is about contracts. Aiming at achieving a desirable level of predictability and legal certainty for the parties to any given transaction, it sets forth (as the editor explains) ‘a set of uniform private international law rules for (most of) the member states of the EU.’ One can see the overall objective here. The Regulation is part of a general movement toward the harmonization of law across Europe -- and is particularly applicable to transactions which are linked, not just to one country, but to two or more within the European Union. For those engaged in the study, or application of European Law, this book with its thorough and extensive footnoting (containing a mine of references) is a useful acquisition. It does presuppose some familiarity, in fact considerable knowledge, of this particular aspect of European law on the part of the reader and is therefore perfect for researchers or practitioners seeking an enriched, in-depth and certainly authoritative examination of the Rome 1 Regulation. The publication date is cited as at 2015.

Ruslan Medzhitov (Yale / HHMI) 1: Introduction to Inflammation

36:30
https://www.ibiology.org/immunology/inflammation/ Ruslan Medzhitov provides an overview of the field of inflammation, outlines its role in pathology and homeostasis, and explains how Inflammation is generated. Talk Overview: Dr. Ruslan Medzhitov provides an overview of the field of inflammation and outlines its role in pathology and homeostasis. Medzhitov explains how Inflammation is generated when pathogens, allergens, or other perturbations are recognized by sensor cells that then release inflammatory mediators (cytokines and chemokines) to activate effector cells. Inflammation is then followed by a resolution phase that brings the system back to homeostasis. Why do we experience fatigue and loss of appetite, as well as other symptoms when we get ill? Sometimes what we associate with a pathogenic response and illness is the effect of inflammation. In his second talk, Medzhitov outlines the symptoms that we often feel when we get sick, like the lack of appetite (anorexia), and unveils the molecular mechanisms that explain why we have evolved this way. In addition, he compares and contrasts how anorexia affects the outcome of bacterial and viral infections. Speaker Biography: Dr. Ruslan Medzhitov is a Sterling Professor of immunology at Yale School of Medicine and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. His laboratory studies the signals that initiate and control the process of inflammation, allergic reaction, and immune response. His laboratory also studies tissue biology, and the communication circuits that help to establish stable cellular communities within tissues. Medzhitov earned his bachelor's in Biology from Tashkent State University, and pursued a doctorate degree in biochemistry at the Moscow State University (1993). Medzhitov was a graduate student during the profound economic crisis that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, which prevented him from performing any experimental work during his graduate studies. Being unable to do any experimental work didn’t stop Medzhitov, who continued his studies by reading the scientific literature at the Library for Natural Sciences in Moscow, and attending lectures. There, he encountered his passion towards studying immunology after reading a paper by Dr. Charles Janeway, where he described his theories on how the immune system works. Medzhitov, fascinated by these theories, contacted Janeway and started a collaboration that shaped the rest of his career. In 1993, Medzhitov received a 3-month Unesco fellowship to study bioinformatics with Russell Doolittle at the University of California, San Diego. In 1994, he continued his postdoctoral training at Janeway’s lab. For his scientific contributions, Medzhitov was elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (2010), and received the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine (2011). The Lengthy Regulation - Episode 1 - Samurai Warriors 2 Empires Narrative Let's Play

21:47
In a parallel universe the Eternal Law is more of just a Regulation, and the world is populated only by poor-to-mediocre voice actors. In this video I start a series in which I repeat the challenge of the Eternal Law series - an Oda-Takeda race for domination - only in Samurai Warriors 2 Empires (PS2) instead. This is also a 'narrative' let's play, but since the game isn't very serious at all, it's more of a parody than a story! The gameplay can be considered a 'challenge run' of sorts, as due to problems with the emulator the game breaks if I use a Double or True Musou at any time, so I have to play the game without them! I hope to experiment with as many characters as possible, as I am pretty much new to the game. So give it a watch, and do leave feedback etc. so I can take it into account for future episodes should I make some. For the contest, I'll be ranking the clans on Turns Needed, Score and Time. The first is how many turns as passed before the game is over. The second is the combined total of army exp points earned in battle. The last is the total time spend by the player (me) in battle. Also it's in HD... pretty sure the PS2 isn't in HD, but it'll damn sure make those narrative cutscenes look sharp! ---------------- See The Eternal Law (Shogun 2 Narrative Let's Play): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeunFtMS5KNKaZreeiiOvlm_WFooRescl More videos from the OfficiallyDevin Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/OfficiallyDevin

IELTS Listening - Top 14 tips!

14:38
http://www.engvid.com/ Improve your IELTS score with these quick tips! In this lesson, you will learn about the Listening module of the IELTS exam. I will teach you the most common mistakes people make and how to avoid them. Watch this free video, so that you know how to practice for the IELTS Listening test. I want you to be prepared and confident on your test day, so that you can get the best results on your IELTS! http://www.engvid.com/ielts-listening-top-10-tips/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's lesson, I am going to teach you my top tips for the IELTS listening module. Okay? So, before I teach you these tips, you might be wondering: "What's the IELTS listening module?" Well, the IELTS is a test and one part of the test is listening. So, in the listening section, you're going to have 40 questions where you're going to listen to some conversations for about 30 minutes, and then you'll have 10 minutes to transfer your answers over to another sheet. So, in total, it's 40 minutes; 30 minutes for listening, 10 minutes for writing down your answers. Okay, now this part of the IELTS is very possible to get a high mark, especially if you follow my tips. All right? Now, before we get started, I just want to let you know: I know you can do the IELTS. I know you can pass, I know you can get a great mark, a great bandwidth - you just have to have confidence in yourself and you have to practice. Practice, practice, practice; it really pays off. So let's get started. So, my first tip: write no more than three words. What do I mean by this? I don't mean for the whole thing, write no more than three words. On the IELTS, you will have to read the instruction of what to do. Often times, the instruction, before you listen, you're going to see: "Write no more than three words." This is an example of an instruction you must follow. One mistake a lot of students make during the IELTS is they don't read instructions properly. They're nervous, they're stressed out, they write whatever, they don't... They don't follow the instructions. If you see something like: "Write no more than three words." Do that. You can't write four, don't write five. Write three or less. Okay? So my main point here: follow the instructions carefully. Point number two: get used to British English. A large part of the IELTS, you will be listening... For... For... Sorry, for the listening, you will be listening to British accents. Sometimes you might hear Australian accents or Canadian, you might hear a range, but a lot of the accents will be British. So it's very important to get used to listening to British accents. And also, listen to other accents like Canadian, Australian; that's a good idea too. Where can you find British accents to listen to? I recommend the BBC. They have a lot of great videos there and most of it's with British accents, so it's a very good idea so you can practice listening. The more you practice listening with British accents, the easier it will be to understand British speakers. Especially if you're used to American English, this is a very good thing to do. Related to this point: British vocab. You should learn British vocabulary. For example: in American English and Canadian English, we say: "truck". In British English, we say: "lorry". So it's good to know some of these British expressions, some British words. One idea where you can practice these is if you check out our website: www.engvid.com, we have a new teacher who is British and who will be talking about British English, so check out her... Her videos. It will also be good to help you with practicing listening to British accents. Number four: spelling counts. Okay? Very important. The listening part of the IELTS is not just listening; you're actually using other skills like writing and reading. Now, with writing, when you write down your answers, you sometimes have to spell something out, so you have to be very, very careful with spelling. Okay? This is something you should really study and practice before you take the listening part of the IELTS. Practice your spelling. Learn spelling rules. We have a lot of different videos on how to spell on engVid, so I would come and check those ones out. Number five - this is the thing that always gets my students and I always warn them about when we practice - plural versus singular. Okay? You have to listen carefully on whether you're writing down the plural with an "s" or the singular. If the question wants me to write down: "cat", someone's talking about their cat and I write down: "cats", it's incorrect. I would get an "X". Okay, so it's important to be careful, to really listen: is it a singular thing, is it a plural thing? Are they saying "store" or "stores"? Okay?
