The Shift from Engaging Students to Empowering Learners

02:05
We often talk about what it means to move from compliance to engagement. It’s the idea of creating an environment where students want to learn rather than have to learn.  But if we want students to be creative, self-directed learners we need to go beyond student engagement and into empowerment.  But this requires some paradigm shifts.  That’s right. We’re going to be talking shift.  Here’s what I mean: The empowered classroom is a shift from giving choices to inspiring possibilities It’s what happens when you move from making the subject interesting to tapping into student interests; when you go from saying “you must learn this” to asking “what do you want to learn?”   It’s a shift from taking assessments to assessing your own learning, it’s an iterative process full of mistakes that ultimately lead to success.   It’s a shift from the teacher asking all the questions to the students asking their own questions, where they chase the inquiry process and take learning off-road. It’s a shift from uncritical consuming to critical consuming and creating. Here students move from critical consuming to inspiration to creativity, where they use the design process to launch their work to the world. It’s a shift from differentiating instruction to personalizing learning  And it’s a shift from rigid to adjustable systems so that students own the process. They can set their own pace, choose their own formats, and decide what resources they want to use to accomplish their goals.  It’s a shift in mindset from compliance to self-direction.  In other words, it’s a shift toward student ownership. When that happens, our students become the creative, critical thinkers who change the world.

Peer support for maths learning Career Stage - Proficient Main Focus area - 4.1 Secondary Focus area - 3.3 School - Mount Alvernia College The teacher uses an independent learning approach to review the questions from a recent exam. Students attempt a set question individually and then an answer is demonstrated on the board by one or more students. As the questions increase in difficulty the girls are encouraged to open up discussion at their tables to collaboratively work out the answer and to inform each other's approach. If the group is unable to answer a question they are encouraged to send an envoy to another group to ask for assistance and to then bring the solution back to their original group. http://www.aitsl.edu.au/australian-professional-standards-for-teachers/illustrations-of-practice/detail?id=IOP00379

Developing Inquiring Minds: Classroom Tour

09:00
This classroom environment helps to create a strong community of independent learners. Students are engaged in inquiry about the moon. They delve deeply into areas of personal interest and are excited about the new knowledge they are building. What aspects of this learning environment lead to developing independent learners? What evidence do you see of authentic learning and of the teacher taking the lead from her students? "Understanding the facts of a story or a content area is of undisputed importance. But for these facts to come to life, they need to be connected to larger patterns of meaning; they need to be in the service of topical research, critical inquiry, and literacy, and they need to be functional and applicable to the world beyond the text."

TEL Tools – Pedagogical Resources for Technology Enhanced Teaching and Learning (June 2015)

16:25
Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund 2014 Project Lead: Cork Institute of Technology Other Partners University College Cork Tralee Institute of Technology University College Dublin Dublin Institute of Technology Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in 3rd level education continues to grow unabashed. As noted by Donnelly et al (2013), teaching and learning will need to adapt. Technology will need to become an ever-bigger part of the learning process. What is key to the growing development of this is the education of those who would use this technology for the purposes of teaching and learning – teacher education and development are central to the more successful national ICT interventions. (Hanafin, 2008). Donnelly & ORourke (2007) identified that – In the Republic of Ireland, as elsewhere, the use of online technologies has become an increasingly important challenge in academic staff development. However, without adequate training and an awareness of how to effectively implement these tools, the effectiveness of these tools can become diluted and may even become counter-productive. ODonnell et al (2012) emphasised that once tools become available, it is imperative that instructors receive adequate training, to ensure that they can achieve effective use of these tools. This is in keeping with Recommendation 11 of the High Level Group on the Modernisation of Higher Education. Effective pedagogy is key to this construct. Though a large number of open-source and commercial TEL tools exist; without sufficient training on how to put these to practical use, they may in the main be incorrectly used and/ or under-utilised. ODonnell and Sharp (2012) reported that “In order for e-learning to be a success university management and staff must take ownership of e-learning and satisfy themselves that pedagogy can be maintained, even though the medium of delivery is changing.” This project proposes to develop teaching and learning resources that will equip instructors with the tools and knowledge required to utilise tools and resources for TEL in an effective and practical manner. Resources will focus on assisting instructors in identifying different teaching approaches and the technologies that can support and enhance those approaches. TEL Tools will cover practical pedagogical principles for TEL, based on best international practice and theory, as reflected by all partners experience in TEL. The resource will clearly outline the key benefits to those TEL tools, placing them in the context of useful and effective modes of assessment and learning (e.g.: independent learning, work-related learning, peer- assessment, etc.). Real-world case studies (e.g. Capturing reflective learning using video or, Promoting learner autonomy through media design and online delivery) will be researched and reported throughout the project, exemplifying the use of TEL tools and contextualising the use of them in third level. Content in the platform will consist of a series of short, media-rich learning objects (Bricks). Each of these bricks will focus on a specific practical aspect of implementing effective TEL. These bricks will be available for individual viewing, but bricks will also be organised into Stacks. These stacks will string together a series of learning bricks which will have a larger learning objective. Users will be able to create their own strands using bricks for active, self-orientated learning.

Kat's top tips for teaching EAP

02:15
Oxford TEFL teacher and tutor Kat gives you her top tips for teaching EAP classes. Here are some handy links to other information about EAP: https://usingacademicenglish.wordpress.com/ http://www.teachitelt.com/academic https://tefltastic.wordpress.com/worksheets/eap/ Oxford TEFL offers a 3-week online English for Academic Purposes course with tutor support via email/ skype and feedback on tasks: http://www.oxfordtefl.com/oxford-tefl-courses/teacher-development/english-academic-purposes/ http://www.oxfordtefl.com/oxford-tefl-courses/teacher-development/apply/ Aim of the Course By the end of the course, participants will have a strong understanding of how to approach teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The aim of the course is to equip participants with easily digestible background knowledge of teaching Academic English within a British or other university or Higher Education college. The content is both theoretical and practical, as a means of giving teachers both an understanding of this branch of ELT, as well as ideas and tasks to explore and reflect on in the EAP classroom. Teaching EAP is an ever-expanding industry. The demand for specialising as an ELT professional is higher than ever, and EAP teaching is now offering diverse work opportunities. An increasing number of International students are under pressure to stand out from the crowd by studying at reputable overseas universities in English. As a result, more and more English-speaking universities are now building campuses overseas, such as the University of Nottingham in Ningbo, China and the Middlesex University in Dubai. Thus, the teaching opportunities for EAP professionals are no longer limited to only English-speaking countries and specialised knowledge in Academic English is continually evolving and developing. Those wishing to take the step from teaching General English to teaching EAP will need to make quite a shift to fulfil their learner needs within a high-stakes university programme, whether it is university preparation course, pre-sessional or in-sessional university course. This can be challenging as EAP materials and curriculum do not, at first impression, lend themselves to a communicative approach to teaching. This course will help participants make the most of previously acquired teacher resources, as a means of ensuring that the EAP learner needs are met. It will also help participants exploit often dull, heavy EAP materials, whilst maintaining your communicative approach to teaching English adults. On this course, you will further your knowledge and understanding of EAP teaching. Many ELT professionals think that teaching EAP requires specialist knowledge, but quite like teaching Business English, while this is a great advantage, it is by no means essential. An understanding of and experience in Higher Education is necessary in order to fully appreciate the demands of academic study, and is also generally a prerequisite when applying for teaching posts in EAP teaching within a university. What an EAP teacher does know is how to prioritise the essential skills and attitude to learning, such as promoting critically thinking and implementing independent learning, in order to give their EAP students the best head start when embarking on Higher Education study within a British or other university system. This course will help participants improve their knowledge of academic study skills, critical thinking, independent learning and research skills. It will present useful approaches and ideas to show participants how to help EAP learners be successful on their academic under-graduate or post-graduate programmes at a British or other university or Higher Education college. This course will also present useful approaches and activities to show participants how to help their EAP learners be successful under-graduate and/or post-graduate students. It will help participants embed academic study skills throughout their teaching, promote critical thinking and implement independent learning tasks, areas that are seldom given the same degree of importance on General English courses. Is this course for you? Participants will have at least 3 years experience in teaching ELT to adults and hold an under-graduate degree and preferably also a post-graduate degree in any specialist subject, since these are often prerequisites for those applying for EAP teaching posts. This course is suitable for participants who have an interest in broadening their expertise in ELT, and move into the diverse, well-paid area of teaching EAP in more formal Higher Education contexts worldwide. The wonders of Pi

The wonders of Pi Career Stage - Proficient Main Focus area - 2.6 Secondary Focus area - 5.2 School - Emmaus College (Vermont South) The teacher explains and demonstrates how the use of an interactive whiteboard (IWB) has transformed his mathematics teaching. It allows him to reflect on what has been learned previously, it enables students to interact and take risks, and it ‘captures’ for his later reflection, the learning that has taken place. In a year 7 mathematics lesson, he uses the IWB to access additional historical resources to support students learning about the formula Pi. His students respond to the engaging and interactive manner in which he uses ICT to teach concepts in an imaginative, and innovative way. http://www.aitsl.edu.au/australian-professional-standards-for-teachers/illustrations-of-practice/detail?id=IOP00158

Cultural Learning Community - Andy Thwaite

05:31
Delivered in partnership with Nimblefish, the Cultural Learning Community programme supported teachers passionate about arts and culture to develop their leadership capacity, using their own strengths and skills as a starting point. Andy Thwaite is Head of Arts Faculty at Hurlingham School, an independent primary school in Wandsworth. The school already has a rich and deep arts offer, so with his CLC project Andy set out, via Artsmark, to create a pioneering trust that would support resource and knowledge sharing in the arts between independent and state schools. It hasn’t happened yet, but the lessons learned by Andy in the process have inspired him to redouble his efforts to achieve this pioneering idea.
