Simple Ruby on Rails 5 REST API From Scratch
In this video I will show you how to create a very simple REST API from scratch using Ruby on Rails 5. We will be able to make requests to perform CRUD on articles stored in a MySQL database. We will install the mysql2 gem along with the faker gem to randomly generate content. How to use Ruby on Rails 5 + Ajax + jQuery to render a New Form on the Index View
I'm learning to code in Ruby on Rails 5 with Ajax and a bit of jQuery. I had a hard time figuring out how to show the new item form on the index using Ajax, so that it doesn't refresh the page or navigate to the new page view. I got it working and thought I'd share how to do it. In this video, you'll see me modify link_to tag using remote: true, Ajax, and a bit of jQuery. Upon clicking the link, it will instantly render the form partial on the index page, without refreshing or going to another page. I hope this helped!

How to Create No Refresh Comments For Rails App | Part 1 - Creation
This Ruby On Rails Tutorial covers how to create comments for your Rails app. The end result is some comments that don't refresh the page. The comments are created, and eventually a piece of javascript gets called that adds the comments to the page. We also cover some things like the Rails 5 form_with forms and the new way to redirect back to the previous page. We also use Devise to create user accounts so that our no refresh comments can still show the user that posted them. The Future of Rails 6: Scalable by Default
We've all heard the phrase "Rails doesn't scale". Long running test suites and no standard for implementing multiple databases makes it hard scale monolithic Rails applications. Rails 6 will start making Rails scalable by default with parallel testing and improved support for using multiple databases. You'll no longer be forced to reinvent the wheel and create your own solution to these problems. In this talk we'll take a look why these improvements are important, how they work, and ways in which small ideas can quickly snowball into major changes. This is just the beginning of Rails 6. Although the graphics are very retro-pixelated, the game has unlimited possibilities in what you can do. Whether you're into surviving, building bases, designing architecture, creating contraptions, even making games within the game, Minecraft has it covered. The game's survival elements challenge the player with hostile creatures of the night, the fear of starvation, as well as the hazardous terrain. In multilayer it be can become even more complex as other players become either hostile, or friendly, and clans of players rise up against each other in the awesome environment that is multiplayer survival. On the more creative side of things, players are able to make use of various items and blocks from the game to create contraptions, mechanisms, traps, cannons, and even advanced real life devices like calculators. All of this is made possible by Minecraft's simplistic form of electricity called redstone. Paired up with pistons, slime blocks, TNT, dispensers, or anything really give the creative side of the game an infinite number of possibilities. Zero downtime deploys for Rails apps
What does it take to deploy an application without any downtime? More than most Ruby developers would expect, turns out; what is aggravated by the lack of documentation and other resources on this topic. In this talk we'll dive into both development practices (hot compatibility, database migrations, caching) and deployment setup (Heroku, Unicorn, HAProxy), covering everything you need to know in order to ship code without affecting a single customer.

Using Rails without Rails by Piotr Sarnacki
Rails got much more modular after 3.0 rewrite. But do you know how to use specific rails elements outside Rails? What if you would like to use ActionView with some other library (like webmachine)? Have you ever needed to render view with layouts outside of the rails stack? Or maybe you wanted to build some kind of system that fetches templates from database rather than from files? Router anyone? You know that you can use it outside rails too? In this talk I will dive into Rails internals and will show you what's there and how you can use it outside rails. Although I will focus on using those parts standalone, this knowledge will most likely help you also build your apps if you ever need something sophisticated that requires modification of regular rails behavior.

Resources, For Real This Time (with Webmachine) by Sean Cribbs
Over the past 5-6 years we have seen a lot of changes in the way that Ruby apps speak HTTP -- from Rails' "REST" conventions, to the brilliantly simple Sinatra, to the modular Rack abstraction -- but we haven't yet unlocked the entire subtle power of HTTP. We know HTTP is so much more than verbs and URLs that correspond to CRUD, and yet it's still too hard to do conditional requests, content negotiation, and then return the right type of response. What if, instead of forcing HTTP into our MVC-shaped applications, we shaped our applications like HTTP? Instead of forcing a resource into seven controller actions or verb/URL-specific methods, what if the resource itself was the abstraction? A whole world of subtle and powerful programming patterns emerge. This is the world of Webmachine, a toolkit for building HTTP applications and a port of the Erlang toolkit of the same name. I will introduce Webmachine's unique programming model and demonstrate how to easily expose rich HTTP behavior in a few short lines of Ruby code.

RailsConf 2018: Re-graphing The Mental Model of The Rails Router by Vaidehi Joshi
Re-graphing The Mental Model of The Rails Router by Vaidehi Joshi Rails is incredibly powerful because of its abstractions. For years, developers have been able to hit the ground running and be productive without having to know the in's and out's of the core computer science concepts that fuel this framework. But just because something is hidden away doesn't mean that it's not worth knowing! In this talk, we'll unpack the CS fundamentals that are used in the Rails router. Together, we'll demystify the graph data structure that lies under the hood of the router in order to understand how a simple structure allows for routing to actually work in a Rails app.

DIY Weekend Deck Project Part 4 Installing Deck Railings
In this project Jeff tackles a weekend deck project. The plan: to salvage the existing frame from an old deck, re-structure, and lay new boards, skirts and rails. This project enables the homeowner to save a lot of money! In this project we used cedar for the purpose of the video; however, using pressure treated will work just as well and cost a lot less. So start saving and start building it! An it's only going to take you a weekend! We'll present and demonstrate several strategies for incrementally moving portions of the application to Ruby and taking advantage of the productivity of Rails in a legacy Java environment.

How Good is Ruby on Rails?
How good is Ruby on Rails? Ruby on Rails is good enough for Silicon Valley to make it their go to solution for slapping together apps. I don’t know if it is that good, because Twitter and Groupon made headlines when they moved off Ruby on Rails. Ruby on Rails is good for apps until they start having hundreds of thousands of users and millions of transactions. Then the performance drops off relative to Node.js. Node.js is pretty powerful. Walmart.com switched to it. Because Node.js is asynchronous, it can handle a lot more connections at the same time with fewer resources relative to Ruby on Rails. So why use Ruby on Rails? You can create an initial web app using cheap talent straight out of school and get decent performance until you get as big as Twitter did in the late 2000s. It sounds like Ruby on Rails is what you use when something is small. Twitter and Groupon only had to migrate off Ruby on Rails when they hit it big. If you have a mid-range app, Ruby is good enough to work. And with the Rails framework, it works well. Ruby on Rails also supports iterative development faster than something like Java, while the common framework makes it easier to outsource portions of the work. I heard Ruby didn’t do was well as Node.js because it doesn’t have the built in utility development. That hasn’t stopped PHP or Python app development, which have the same issue. How does Ruby compare to Python or PHP? Ruby on Rails has a modest advantage to Python in that there is a single, universal framework – Rails. That accelerates development because you know how to program all aspects of it while having a lot of freedom. And less available in code modules to re-use. That’ll correct itself with time. And when Ruby figures out how to issue a new version without breaking the old code, Ruby will be great.
