APA Style Journal Article Reporting Standards

04:01
As part of its promotion of greater transparency and the assessment of rigor in psychological science, the American Psychological Association has released new Journal Article Reporting Standards for researchers seeking to publish in scholarly journals. The standards are specific to psychological research and offer guidelines on the information needed in a research article to ensure that the elements included are comprehensible and that the study can be replicated. The new standards: - Recommend the division of hypotheses, analyses and conclusions into primary, secondary and exploratory groupings to allow for a full understanding of quantitative analyses presented in a manuscript and enhance reproducibility. - Offer modules for authors reporting on N-of-1 design, replication, clinical trials, longitudinal studies and observational studies, as well as the analytic methods structural equation modeling and Bayesian analysis. - Address the plurality of inquiry traditions, methods and goals, providing guidance on material to include across diverse qualitative research methods. - Provide standards for reporting research using mixed-method designs, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative standards. For more information: “Journal Article Reporting Standards for Quantitative Research in Psychology: The APA Publications and Communications Board Task Force Report” - http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/amp-amp0000151.pdf “Journal Article Reporting Standards for Qualitative Primary, Qualitative Meta-Analytic, and Mixed Methods Research in Psychology: The APA Publications and Communications Board Task Force Report” - http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/amp-amp0000151.pdf "Editorial: Journal Article Reporting Standards” - http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/amp-amp0000263.pdf __ The American Psychological Association is the leading scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, with more than 115,700 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students as its members. The Role of Oxytocin in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

04:12
Web: http://benthamscience.com/journals/current-medicinal-chemistry/volume/15/issue/7/page/698/ Journal: Current Medicinal Chemistry Article: The Role of Oxytocin in Neuropsychiatric Disorders Authors: D. Marazziti and M Catena Dell'Osso Oxytocin (OT) is a neurohypophysial hormone synthesized in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus. Although OT-like substances have been identified in all vertebrates, OT has been found only in mammals where it plays a major role in the onset and maintaining of behaviors which are typical of these animals, such as labour and lactation. Recently, several data have suggested the involvement of OT in the formation of infant attachment, maternal behavior, pair bonding and, more generally, in linking social signals with cognition, behaviors and reward. The aim of this paper was to review critically the role of OT in the regulation of different physiological functions and complex behaviors, as well as its possible involvement in the pathophysiology of some neuropsychiatric disorders. MEDLINE and PubMed (1972-2007) databases were searched for English language articles by using the following keywords: oxytocin, physiology, cognitive functions, attachment, psychopathology, psychiatric disorders. Papers were examined that addressed the following aspects of the OT system: synthesis and localization, receptors, physiology: In addition, latest findings showing abnormalities of OT and OT system in several neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, addiction, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder and Prader-Willy syndrome, will be also discussed together with the possible clinical use of OT or its analogues and/or antagonists. Top 10 Grad School Interview Questions

05:36
GradSchoolHeaven.com founder and Harvard graduate Giulio Rocca discusses the 10 most common interview questions asked by graduate schools. Web: http://www.gradschoolheaven.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gradschoolheaven Twitter: https://twitter.com/gradheaven Abridged Transcript: Today, I'll be talking to you about the 10 most common graduate school interview questions. Some schools, particularly when applying to doctoral programs, will invite candidates to an on-campus interview. These interviews are generally frightening to candidates because there's not much in the way of guidance as to what to expect. 1. The first is to tell me more about yourself. There’s a good chance you’ll be asked this question. The most important thing that you want to do is to have a synthesized answer, no more than one or two minutes, that showcases your personal, academic, and professional accomplishments in a nutshell. In other words, a kind of preview. Don’t go on a rant, and don’t go on a tangent! 2. Second, you may be asked: why are you interested in this field? Again, go back to your personal statement and think about what you wrote in that statement and try to expand on it. Perhaps you can go deeper into some of the reason that you discussed or introduce addition reasons that were not discussed in the personal statement. in either case, try to make a compelling case as to why this particular field is what you were born to do. 3. Third, why are you interested in our school? This is almost certainly going to be asked in the interview process. Think about specific elements of the program that set it apart -- the faculty, the facilities, the curriculum, student activities, job placement record, and other reasons -- and make a compelling argument once again. 4. Fourth, what are you going to research? This is particularly relevant if you’re applying to a doctoral program, but for master’s applicants too there’s often a master’s thesis and this is something that you can mention. In answering this question, you don’t necessarily have to have a definitve answer that you’re going to be held accountable to, as much as you want to demonstrate that you’ve conducted some preliminary thinking on the subject and that you're a serious candidate for such research. 5. Fifth, think about your strengths and weaknesses; your interviewer may very well ask you to talk about them. For strengths, pick ones that are relevant to academia, for example critical thinking, quantitative abilities, qualitative abilities, research capabilities, and so forth. And with respect to weaknesses, try to pick weakness that are really weakness turning into strengths; so, for example, if you’re a soft-spoken individual you might say that your weakness is that you’re occasionally soft-spoken but that you’ve taken steps to be more assertive. 6. Sixth, you’ll probably be asked, in so many words, why they should accept you. Have a bullet-proof answer for this question. Talk about your personal, academic, and professional achievements, discuss your long-range plans and how you plan to take full advantage of the university’s resources to make them come true. You want to convince them that they’re not going to be wasting an admissions spot with you. 7. Seventh, you may be asked to discuss your career goals. If you’re applying to a doctoral program, it’s usually appropriate to discuss the probability of teaching, and if you’re applying to a master’s program you can also discuss the possibility of extending your studies in a doctoral program or professional applications. 8. Eight, you may be asked where else you’re applying. This is a very difficult question to navigate. If you answer and provide full details about all the place that you’re applying to, you may dilute your application to the university in question. On the other hand, if you’re too secretive you may alienate your interviewer. A possible middle of the road approach is to indicate that you’ve applied to a number of other universities, without being too specific, but reiterate how important it is for you to be accepted to the one that you’re talking about today. Reiterate your desire and how much you’d love to have a position in the program. 9. Ninth, you may be asked to discuss what you’ve read recently. Ideally, you should be able to cite scholarly publications, whether it’s journal articles or books published by academics that demonstrate that you’re connected with the community. 10. Tenth, you may be asked if you have any questions for the interviewer. Think about these questions carefully; you can prepare them ahead of time so you’re not nervous. Try to ask questions that either delve more deeply into the interviewer’s background and research interests or that explore aspects of the program that are not obviously stated on the web site or the marketing materials of the university.

Michael Heiser — Biblical Numerology

Dr. Michael Heiser on how to approach biblical numerology. For those who have an interest in this kind of stuff, there's a journal article by Mikeal Parsons: “Exegesis ‘By the Numbers’: Numerology and the New Testament.” In the Old Testament, this is what makes things like the genealogies and lifespans interesting. It’s a fascinating article! Who Should Fund Medical Research?

07:03
The December 12, 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association published an article by two Johns Hopkins Medical Center staff stating that there is a crisis because medical research is becoming too expensive, big pharma will need to cut back on funding this research, and they anticipate cuts in federal research funding this next year. While some novel suggestions such as passing bonds for research were made, the biggest problem we face is not that there isn't enough medical research, but that the vast majority of the research that is done is filled with conflicts of interest that make it impossible to trust as valid. Marcia Angell, MD and editor in chief ot the NEJM quit her job as did Ushma Neill, past editor in chief of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. In addition, Catherine DeAngeles, the present editor in chief of JAMA, has published considerable literature criticizing the poor quality of our medical journal articles. I suggest we put the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the postion of regulating medical research for our medical journals. This would include all research done by big pharma. However, NIH should be funded solely by Congress. Those organizations needing (and wanting) to do medical research would pay for the studies, but all money would go to the government, not the NIH...we must eliminate the financial conflicts of interest that now exist and lead to medical articles of very poor quality. These are the studies that your doctors rely on when you're sick and in the hospital! For more information please visit www.doctorsaputo.com

Information Literacy: Identify Your Sources (Otis College)

09:55
Identify what sources are good to use for your papers. Learn the difference between scholarly, academic, professional, popular, and substantive news publications and the benefits and uses for each. To effectively research for college-level papers, students must learn how to evaluate articles in journals and magazines. In this video, an art history professor at Otis College of Art and Design discusses some of the criteria useful in determining whether the information found is scholarly, popular, or professional. The same evaluation criteria may be applied to information found on websites and in books. Please see also the Otis Information Literacy website: http://library.otis.edu/informationliteracy.html
