Asset Management: Industry Overview and Careers in Asset Management

04:45
Asset Management: Industry overview and Careers in Asset Management Asset Management is about managing clients’ investments and providing them with the strategies and expertise that would allow them to achieve their goals and secure their financial future. This video is part of our series dedicated to the different sub-industries in the world of Business & Finance. Our goal is to understand how it functions, what type of services it offers its clients, which are the major players in the field and what it is like to do this for a living. An individual or an institution is likely to approach an asset management firm when their investment income is substantial. In such cases, asset managers are able to offer expertise across a wide spectrum of asset classes (such as stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate, private equity, etc). Moreover, large firms have branches all over the world and are therefore able to offer geographical expertise as well. Given that asset managers closely follow all of these markets, they are able to offer high-quality advice and superior risk-return investments. The large players in the asset management industry are indeed very large. There are several companies whose assets under management exceed $1 trillion. Some of them are pure investment funds (BlackRock, Vanguard, StateStreet, Fidelity), while others are arms of the large banking conglomerates (Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, UBS, BNP). The largest firm in the world in terms of assets under management in 2015 was BlackRock. Operational Risk Management in Financial Services

08:30
Operational risk can have a crippling effect on a company if not managed properly. This is especially true in the financial services industry. Banks and investment firms must pay close attention to variables that have the potential to impact their operations, not only from the breakdown of technology and processes, but also from a personnel perspective. The responsibility of managing one's money is great, and the inability to properly anticipate and manage potential risk factors can have a devastating effect, all the way up to the industry level. A case in point was the subprime mortgage crisis of the late 2000s, which led to a nationwide economic recession. Mike Pinedo, the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management at New York University's Stern School of Business, is an expert in risk management research, particularly in the context of the financial services industry. In his presentation at The Boeing Center's 13th annual Meir Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture, he described the main types of primary risks in a financial services company: market risk, credit risk, and operational risk. Ops risk, which is the risk of a loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, or external events, may be the most important factor, he claimed. Why Invest in Employee Training & Development? By NetCom Learning Training Operation Manager

01:02
http://www.netcomlearning.com/about-us/about-us.html Investing in employee development according to Eugenia means that companies can utilize the resources they already have in the organization. Eugenia talks about how it would be very time consuming to keep hiring employees for every specific job that comes up. By investing in employees the company or organization gets more back on the investments that have already been made in employees which is a more productive and efficient way to use company resources.

What is TREASURY MANAGEMENT? What does TREASURY MANAGEMENT mean?

03:39
What is TREASURY MANAGEMENT? What does TREASURY MANAGEMENT mean? TREASURY MANAGEMENT meaning - TREASURY MANAGEMENT definition - TREASURY MANAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Treasury management (or treasury operations) includes management of an enterprise's holdings, with the ultimate goal of managing the firm's liquidity and mitigating its operational, financial and reputational risk. Treasury Management includes a firm's collections, disbursements, concentration, investment and funding activities. In larger firms, it may also include trading in bonds, currencies, financial derivatives and the associated financial risk management. Most banks have whole departments devoted to treasury management and supporting their clients' needs in this area. Until recently, large banks had the stronghold on the provision of treasury management products and services. However, smaller banks are increasingly launching and/or expanding their treasury management functions and offerings, because of the market opportunity afforded by the recent economic environment (with banks of all sizes focusing on the clients they serve best), availability of (recently displaced) highly seasoned treasury management professionals, access to industry standard, third-party technology providers' products and services tiered according to the needs of smaller clients, and investment in education and other best practices. A number of independent treasury management systems (TMS) are available, allowing enterprises to conduct treasury management internally. For non-banking entities, the terms Treasury Management and Cash Management are sometimes used interchangeably, while, in fact, the scope of treasury management is larger (and includes funding and investment activities mentioned above). In general, a company's treasury operations comes under the control of the CFO, Vice-President / Director of Finance or Treasurer, and is handled on a day-to-day basis by the organization's treasury staff, controller, or comptroller. In addition the Treasury function may also have a Proprietary Trading desk that conducts trading activities for the bank's own account and capital, an Asset liability management (ALM) desk that manages the risk of interest rate mismatch and liquidity; and a Transfer pricing or Pooling function that prices liquidity for business lines (the liability and asset sales teams) within the bank. Banks may or may not disclose the prices they charge for Treasury Management products, however the Phoenix Hecht Blue Book of Pricing may be a useful source of regional pricing information by product or service. Concerns about systemic risks in Over The Counter (OTC) derivatives markets, led to G20 leaders agreeing to new reforms being rolled out in 2015. This new regulation, states that largely standardized OTC derivative contracts should be traded on electronic exchanges, and cleared centrally by Central Counterparty/Clearing House trades. Trades and their daily valuation should also be reported to authorized Trade Repositories and initial and variation margins should be collected and maintained .

Commercial Banking Interview Questions

24:52
This video will help you prepare for a commercial banking interview. Whether you are applying for a credit analyst, commercial banking associate, or lending officer role, most commercial banking interviews follow a similar format. Start by understanding the group you are applying for. Then prepare for behavioral questions as most interviews focus on “fit” and your communication skills. From a technical side, understand the basic credit terms, ratios to judge the performance and efficiency of a business, and know how to read the three financial statements. As always, practice is most important. Good luck! We walk through 6 different commercial banking interview questions; 1) Why commercial banking? 2) Tell me about a past sales experience 3) Walk me through a $1 million credit proposal 4) What does it take to be a great commercial banker? 5) Name three important credit ratios? 6) How are the three financial statements linked? If you have any other questions, please comment below. If you enjoyed the video and found it helpful, please like and subscribe to FinanceKid for more videos soon! 5. How do Private Equity Firms and its partners make money?

03:26
How do Private Equity Firms and its partners make money? Who are these GPs that we discussed in our last video (Video #4)? They are the private equity firms. Some of the largest private equity firms in the world are Carlyle Group, TPG, KKR, Blackstone and Apollo. Private equity firms make money primarily through two sets of fees: management fees and performance fees. Management fees are a percentage of assets which are meant to cover office rent, employee salaries and other types of day-to-day expenses. Traditionally,in private equity, these fees have been 2% of assets. As private equity firms have grown (and continue to grow) larger, management fees for the mega funds decreased below 2%. In venture capital, the smaller funds might have management fees higher than 2%. The second type of fee is a performance fee, also known as carried interest or “the carry”. This fee is used to compensate the GP for its performance. Occasionally, there is a hurdle rate which guarantees the investor be paid a fixed amount before the GP can get any part of the fee (the performance fee is typically 20% of the upside). Let’s look at an example where we have a performance of 20%, a hurdle rate of 8% and a GP catch up clause. The first 8% of performance will go to the LP; the next 2% will go to the GP. The remainder of the returns will be divided 80% to the LP and 20% to the GP. With a 2% management fee and a 20% performance fee, the private equity fund is said it to be charging “two and twenty”. In addition to management and performance fees, we also have other various small fees such as transaction and/or monitoring fees. Through all these fees, the founders of these top private equity firms have made quite a lot of money. In fact, many private equity founders are billionaires that have done some great things with their money. Among his many donations, Steve Schwartzman from Blackstone has given $150 million to Yale University as well as $100 million to the New York public library to fund renovation and expansion. In addition to many other projects, Henry Kravis from KKR has given $125 million dollars to the Columbia Business School and a $100 to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre to fund cancer treatment and research. And, finally there’s David Rubenstein from The Carlyle Group. Rubenstein signed the Giving Pledge that was originated by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett encouraging wealthy individuals to give away half of their earnings, either during their lifetime or through their will. With a net worth of almost $3 billion, David Rubenstein is going to be doing a lot of giving!

"Why should I hire you?" - Best Interview Questions and Answers

03:29
WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU is often the last question you will be asked in an interview. Prepare for it. This is your chance to restate the skills you possess that are most relevant to the position and to summarize your other qualities that make you the perfect person for the job, and that's why they should hire you. Outline your answer before you go in, so that you can answer clearly, concisely, and with confidence. Your answer should be short and to the point. It should reflect your professional background as it relates to current needs and problems of the position. Review the job description and tell how you are the right person for the job by matching up your skill set with each bullet point of the job description. In formulating your answer as to why they should hire you, be sure to address these areas: 1. Determine their goals for the position. This should come up during your research into the company and the position. If possible, talk to others who work for the company. If you are unclear on this point, include it in the questions you ask at the interview and be prepared to incorporate it into your answer. 2. Show you have the skills needed for the job. Based on the goals you have identified in step one, determine how your skills and experience support those goals. If necessary, refer back to your list of skills. Amazon's 14 Leadership Principles via Jeff Bezos

20:21
Are you looking for a job? If you're watching this video, you're part of a small percentage of people that care about the values and principles of their employer; this is a well known success factor in employee performance and tenure. However, you're competing with many others that apply in bulk for the same position; so how do you capitalize on your time investment? Be proactive! when applying And during interviews, be sure to let recruiters and hiring managers know that you watched this! --- 1. Customer obsession: start with the customer and work backwards; work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust; pay attention to competitors, but keep obsessing over customers 2. Ownership: think like an owner, long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results; act on behalf of the entire company, not just for your own team; never say “that’s not my job" 3. Invent and simplify: expect and require innovation and invention from your team and always find ways to simplify; be externally aware, always look for new ideas from everywhere, and don’t be limited by “not invented here" 4. Leaders are right a lot 1:52 : you have strong judgment and good instincts; you seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm your beliefs 5. Frugality 3:50 : accomplish more with less. Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention. There are no extra points for growing headcount, budget size or fixed expense 6. Hire and develop the best 5:01 : raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion; recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization; develop leaders and take seriously your role in coaching others 7. Earn trust 5:05 : listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully. Be vocally self-critical, even when doing so is awkward or embarrassing; leaders do not believe their or their team’s body odor smells of perfume; benchmark yourself and your team against the best. 8. Insist on the highest standards 7:42 : you have relentlessly high standards - many may think these standards are unreasonably high; you are continually raising the bar and driving your team to deliver high quality products, services and processes; defects do not get sent down the line and problems are fixed so they stay fixed 9. Bias for action 11:34 : speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking. 10. Learn and be curious 11:34 : you are never done learning and you always seek to improve; you are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them 11. Have backbone. Disagree and commit 13:26 : respectfully challenge decisions when you disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting; have conviction and be tenacious; do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion; once a decision is determined, commit to it. 12. Dive deep 13:26 : operate at all levels, stay connected to the details, audit frequently, and be skeptical when metrics and anecdote differ. No task is beneath you. 13. Think big 16:04 : thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. Think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers. 14. Deliver results 16:04 : focus on the key inputs for your business and deliver with the right quality and in a timely fashion; despite setbacks, rise to the occasion and never settle

Roadmap - Develop Business Model and Fund Investment

01:32
How should manufacturers move forward toward adopting IoT and connected products? Line-of-Business managers should create a vision for connected products and operations, defining how all business functions across the company can capitalize on IoT opportunities. A best practice here is to create a cross-functional team that can help drive these initiatives and build momentum from the bottom up by empowering the involved functional areas and sharing how they will benefit from the connected product initiative.

What the heck does a consultant DO, exactly? - Management Consulting 101

16:59
People say that I solve #businessproblems. That’s not wrong. But it’s way over-simplified. What does it mean to “solve problems”? What specifically do #consultants do to do that? So let’s put it this way. Think of #managementconsultants, especially entry-level ones as “content ambassadors”. We act like the bridge between a complicated client context with various needs, conditions, and attributes and a massive back-end network of knowledge and experts. This sounds simple but it’s not. There is a lot of slicing and shovelling involved. Let’s look at an example. I was in charge of the cement workstream and the key question was: should the client close down the plant? Yes, I have a massive network of experts behind me but there’s no way they can answer that question given how little they know about the client and market context. As the #consultant in charge, I have to analyze the problem, breaking it into smaller parts… In order to know if the client should close the plant or not, we need to know if we can turnaround their negative profits and if yes, how long does it take? Then into the first branch, I explore ways to improve sales and ways to cut costs. Suppose I was studying the costs and realize logistics is one of the biggest. Then only at this point would I choose from the network a cement logistics expert to talk to. Is this clear enough for ya? Let’s watch this video for more insights!
