The Difference Between Bonds vs Stocks vs Mutual Funds

02:14
How are bonds, stocks, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds different? In this video, Pure Financial's Director of Research, Brian Perry, CFP®, CFA® explains. Read the full blog: http://bit.ly/StocksBondsMutFunds Transcript: So, today we're going to talk about stocks, and bonds, and mutual funds. And stocks and bonds are investment asset classes. Stocks enter into a portfolio in order to provide growth, but they are volatile - they move up and down. Over the long term, they should provide higher returns than bonds. Bonds in a portfolio are there to generate income, but also stability and diversification. Oftentimes, when stocks go higher, bonds fall. And so the idea of combining stocks and bonds in a diversified portfolio makes sense for the vast majority of investors. Mutual funds, on the other hand, are not an asset class. They're an investment vehicle. And so, when it comes time to decide how to invest in the stocks and bonds you're going to own, you have three choices: you can buy individual securities, you can buy mutual funds, or you can buy ETFs - Exchange Traded Funds. The choice varies, depending on what you're trying to accomplish and the asset class, but broadly speaking, individual securities are where you go out and you buy Microsoft or GE, or you buy a municipal bond, and you own just that. There are no ongoing fees associated, but you are responsible for doing your own research and monitoring. And it can be hard to be fully diversified. Mutual funds and ETFs provide professional management diversification. And although there are ongoing costs, with many mutual funds, the costs can be quite low. As with most aspects of investing, the choice of a mutual fund, an individual security, or an ETF isn't a straightforward or simple one, and the choice is going to ultimately depend on you, the investor. But it's definitely worth considering because the vehicle you use is going to impact your investment returns. Importantly, and in conclusion, if you buy a mutual fund, an individual of security, or an ETF, you still own stocks or bonds. So when you're working on your asset classes, and your asset allocation, don't worry so much about what vehicles you've used. Think of it as "how many stocks do I own" and "how many bonds do I own." And then a separate, discrete decision will be, individual securities, mutual funds or ETFs. For more on stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, look at the blog on PureFinancial.com. Why Bond Prices and Yields are Inversely Related

05:50
Help us make better videos: http://www.informedtrades.com/donate Trade stocks and bonds with Scottrade, the broker Simit uses: http://bit.ly/scottrade-IT (see our review: http://bit.ly/scottrade-IT2) KEY POINTS 1. Bond prices and bond yields move in opposite directions. When bond prices go up, that means yields are going down; when bond prices go down, this means yields are going up. Mathematically, this is because yield is equal to: annual coupon payments/price paid for bond A decrease in price is thus a decrease in the denominator of the equation, which in turn results in a larger number. 2. Conceptually, the reason for why a decrease in bond price results in an increase bond yields can be understood through an example. a. Suppose a corporation issues a bond to a bondholder for $100, and with a promise of $5 in coupon payments per year. This bond thus has a yield of 5%. ($5/$100 = 5%) b. Suppose the same corporation then issues additional bonds, also for $100 but this time promising $6 in coupon payments for year -- and thus yielding 6%. No rational investor would choose the old bond; instead, they would all purchase the new bond, because it yielded more and was at the same price. As a result, if a holder of the old bonds needed to sell them, he/she would need to do so at a lower price. For instance, if holder of the old bonds was willing to sell it at $83.33, than any prospective buyer would get a bond that earned $5 in coupon payments on an $83.33 payment -- effectively an annual yield of 6% (5/83.33). The yield to maturity could be even higher, since the bond would give the bondholder $100 upon reaching maturity. 3. The longer the duration of the bonds, the more sensitivity there is to interest rate moves. For instance, if interest rates rise in year 3 of a 30 year bond (meaning there are 27 years left until maturity) the price of the bond would fall more than if interest rates rise in year 3 of a 5 year bond. This is because an interest in interest rates reduces the relative appeal of existing coupon payments, and the more coupon payments that are remaining, the more interest rate fluctuations will impact the price of the bond. 4. Lastly, a small note on jargon: when investors or commentators say, "bonds are up," (or down) they are referring to bond prices. "Bonds are up" thus means bond prices are up and yields are down; conversely, "bonds are down" means bond prices are down and yields are up.

What is a Stock or a Share?

01:53
At some point, just about every company needs to raise money, whether to open up a West Coast sales office, build a factory, or hire a crop of engineers. In each case, they have two choices: 1) Borrow the money, or 2) raise it from investors by selling them a stake in the company. A stock is an ownership share in a corporation. Each of these shares denotes a part ownership for a shareowner, stockholder, or shareholder, of that company. When you own a share of stock, you are a part owner in the company with a claim however small it may be on every asset and every penny in earnings. Individual stock buyers rarely think like owners, and it's not as if they actually have a say in how things are done. Nevertheless, it's that ownership structure that gives a stock its value. If stockowners didn't have a claim on earnings, then stock certificates would be worth no more than the paper they're printed on. As a company's earnings improve, investors are willing to pay more for the stock. There are shares in private companies and public companies. Public companies are known as corporation and their shares can be purchased on global exchanges. There are two main types of stock: common and preferred. Common stock usually entitles the owner to vote at shareholders' meetings and to receive dividends. Preferred stock generally does not have voting rights, but has a higher claim on assets and earnings than the common shares. For example, owners of preferred stock receive dividends before common shareholders and have priority in the event that a company goes bankrupt and is liquidated. Basics of Stocks and Bonds

10:00
ZACH DE GREGORIO, CPA www.WolvesAndFinance.com An overview of Stocks and Bonds. Stocks and Bonds are a type of asset class. An asset class is a category of investments with similar characteristics. The video walks through an example of how stocks and bonds are used in practice. In the example a company wants to raise money. A company develops a business case to build a new factory for $500M. They can raise money in the financial markets by issuing stocks and bonds. Stocks are an ownership interest in the company. The video describes Market Capitalization. You calculate Market Capitalization using the current stock price to determine the current perceived value of the company. Bonds are debt issued by the company. Bonds can also be traded in the market and whoever holds the bond receives the interest payment. The main difference between stocks and bonds is that stocks are riskier than bonds. Bonds are set payment amounts. Stocks, on the other hand, are not a set payment. Dividend payments in stocks are based on whether a company makes profits. This allows you to participate in the upside or downside of the company. The other reason stocks are riskier than bonds is that in bankruptcy, bondholders get priority over stockholders. The reason why the differences between stocks and bonds are important is for managing investment portfolios. Your goal in portfolio management is to manage the risk of the portfolio, which you can achieve by managing the percentages of stocks versus bonds. One last point covered in the video discusses tax implications. For example, at the time of the shooting of this video there are different rates for short term capital gains versus long term capital gains for individuals. It is important to contact a tax professional to understand the implications of your investments. Neither Zach De Gregorio or Wolves and Finance Inc. shall be liable for any damages related to information in this video. It is recommended you contact a CPA in your area for business advice.

Difference between Stocks Shares and Equities. We also covered what are outstanding shares, market cap and book value. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi guys, Nrupen here and welcome to the first video of “Stock Investing Simplified” video series. In this video we'll cover some basic stuff that you need to know before you start investing in stocks. First lets understand what are stocks. For example, assume Amit wants Rs. 200 to open a new Transportation Business. The amount which he doesn't have in his bank account. Amit have two options to raise this money, either to ask for loan from bank, or to go public with company and raise capital from investors who see potential of growth and profit in his business. After going through all necessary processes required to go public, Amit gets permission to sell shares of his company. Shares are nothing but ownership of company divided in parts. Amit sells 100 shares of company for Rs 2 each, where each share of company represents 1% ownership of everything in Amit's Transportation Business. It includes all assets with future and current earnings. If Bunty buys 10 shares of Amits Transportation Business, he will have 10% ownership of company. Which also means Bunty contributed Rs 20 equity and owns 10% stocks of company. In short, Shares are nothing but ownership of company divided in parts. Equity is nothing but ownership of company represented in form of capital raised from buying shares. Stocks are nothing but ownership of company represented in percentage. While talking about stocks, we generally assume all of them same, unless and until assuming other meaning is necessary. Now rather than selling all 100 shares, Amit decides to buy 10 shares himself, and only intends to sell rest 90 to investors then we can say that Amit's Transportation Business have 90 Outstanding Shares. Which leads us to 2 new definitions. Outstanding Shares are shares which are held by investors and not by the company. Market Capitalization or market cap is nothing but current price of company multiplied by number of outstanding shares. In case of Amit's Transportation Business market capitalization will be 90 x 2 = Rs 180. Now that was hypothetical example, in real life market cap is not as cheap as Rs. 180, it is in 100s to 1000s of crores. Companies whose market cap is between 100 to 1000 crores are known as small cap companies. Companies whose market cap is between 1000 to 5000 crores are known as mid cap companies. Companies whose market cap is above 5000 crores are known as large cap companies. Now suppose after one year Amit Transportation Business grows and doubles in size, means a company which started with Rs 200 now becomes worth Rs 400. After doubling in size other investors get interested in buying shares of Amit Transportation Business because they also see potential growth in business. Suppose Chandu is new investor who wants to buy shares and Bunty who owns 10 shares of company wants to sell his shares. Since size of business doubles the price of each shares should be Rs 4 now, but instead of selling share for price it should be, Chandu and Bunty decide to bargain on price. Bunty wants to sell Rs 4 share for Rs 5 whereas Chandu wants to buy same share for Rs 3. This bargain battle between buyers and sellers of stocks everyday leads to change of price of stock. As investors our job is to analyze who will win this battle and bet our money with winning team. Which leads us to our final definition ? Book value of share is value for which a share should be sold, or a value which every stock holder will get per share if company decides to sell all its assets and return investors their money. In next video we'll have a little look on different methods to analyze stocks including their advantages and limitations. Do you ever feel like you don’t know where to start? Let's tackle two of the most basic investing types you should know: Stocks and Bonds Let’s start with Stocks. When a company needs money to expand or grow their business, they can sell stock to the public. In exchange for that money, the INVESTORS (the people who buy a stock) now “own” a piece of that company. Investors can make money on stocks by buying them when they have a lower value and selling them when they have more value. Investors can also make money by sharing in a regular payout from the company to its shareholders, something that’s also known as DIVIDENDS. Not all companies pay regular dividends, but when they occur, dividends and changes in share price are both part of total return, which is your total gain or loss on an investment. What about Bonds? When you buy a bond, you are actually loaning money to a company, government, or government agency. The money is typically used for things like construction and other projects. During the life of the bond, an investor gets paid interest at steady, predetermined times. Interest is basically the money you are given by the borrower in return for lending them the money. At the end of the loan’s life, the borrower returns the money you initially lent them. You can trade bonds in the market, just like you can trade a stock. Bonds are considered less risky investments than stocks, but they also typically have lower total returns. So what did we learn? A Stock: A share in the ownership of a company A Bond: An interest-earning loan you make to a company or government.
