GPU Mining Rig, PT 2 - Fan Noise

The GPUs are undervolted so the fans don't spin up much. I adds roughly 2-3 decibels at full load but this system is almost completely silent.

HOW TO SET / REDUCE FAN SPEED OF THE ANTMINER S9 - NOISE REDUCTION

02:46
Sorry for the really soft voice recording in the video, please refer below for the written instructions: You will need to download Putty and ssh to the IP of your miner. Once there log in using root as the username and the password you've set up, I believe the default is also root. Once you're logged in you are now at a Linux prompt, with access to the file system inside your miner. Use the following steps to set the fan speed manually. * Navigate to the folder with your config file, type: cd /config * We need to make the bmminer.conf file not read only, type: chmod 755 bmminer.conf * Enter the vi file editor, type: vi bmminer.conf You are now in the vi editor, you should see the entire contents of the bmminer.conf file on your screen, expand the window if you need to. For instructions on using the Vi editor please see the great write-up at the link below. Note you can't change the file until you write it, so don't worry about keystrokes or messing up, just don't write until you're done! http://www.control-escape.com/linux/editing-vim.html * You need too add the following two lines above the line that reads "bitmain-use-vil": * "bitmain-fan-ctrl" : true, * "bitmain-fan-pwm" : "100", To do this move the cursor down with the arrow keys, navigate to the begining of the line that reads "bitmain-use-vil", click i, this puts you in edit mode, hit enter to add a blank line, click up to position your cursor in the blank line you just created, copy the above two lines, right click to paste them into the config file. Now write the file and exit vi by typing: :wq You can view the file to make sure the changes took by typing: vi bmminer.conf If it looks good exit by typing: :q You'll need to restart the miner for the change to take effect, you can do this via the gui/browser. Currently I'm running at 65% fan.

Repairing Radeon 6870 fan noise...the easy way....

Expensive GPU fan noise gotcha down? The Radeon 6800 series aren't cheap. Add to it that the fan is not only the weakest link, but it's non-serviceable!!! ARGH!! Do this and it should fix your fan. If the noise in my fan starts up again, I will post how long the fix lasted. Credit: I got this technique from another video, but that video was shaky and bit too long. Apparently the guy didn't own a tripod, so here is a better version of that video. Update: As of today, March 11, 2015, the GPU fan is still very quiet. UPDATE: As of today, June 27th, 2015, the GPU fan is still very quiet. UPDATE: As of today, February 11th, 2016, the GPU fan is still very quiet. Please subscribe to my channel. Thank you!

soundproofing antminer s9 cooling experiment silencer custom fan shroud testing dual exhaust 4 inch

silencer Antminer s9 fan shrouding experiment soundproofing test video. I am using my Antminer s9 as the asic miner for this experiment . Antminer cooling s9 with 4 inch fan shrouds and the custom minerdigi dual exhaust shrouds, see the test video. MinerDigi Official Donation Addresses, support appreciated! BTC- 3NNPa5RrivVptbXNrZzHD3YBwBpcEq6eKB ETH - 0xb495EC3cC5eD85962405AD957844964186F82437 *** YOU CAN CONTACT ME DIRECT FOR WHOLESALE PURCHASE OF THESE ANTMINER MUFFLER SHROUDS*** I am donating my antminer s9 to the name of science for this experiment. we are testing the difference of the fan shrouding that are commonly used on the antminer s9 for cooling then or attaching ducting. We are using an antminer s9 cooling fan shroud that is 4 inches, an antminer s9 cooling fan shroud that is 5 inches and an antminer s9 cooling fan shroud that is 6 inches to (2) 3 inches outputs if you don't have room for 4 -6 inch ducting to cool you basic miner. We are using the antminer s9 for our asic miner cooling setup obviously. Comment what you think the next video should be and or some cool new designs we can try!!!! All ventilation systems have five functional components: an inlet, an outlet, a driving force, distribution and a path. 1) The inlet provides a location or locations for air to enter the space. 2) The outlet provides the location for air to leave the space. 3) The driving force provides the means to move air into, through, and out of the space. 4) Distribution defines how air moves through the space. 5) The path must exist so that air can enter the facility, go through the inlet, pass through the space, leave through the outlet, and finally exit the facility. If all five functional components exist and are operating properly, the ventilation system probably is working for the given conditions. Solutions to most ventilation problems are found by identifying which functional component(s) is missing or improperly operating. COMPONENTS Fans serve as the outlet and driving force in the mechanical ventilation systems in mining farms. The inlets are often a cooled air or some other inlet components. Distribution is created by the placement of the inlets. Air in an mining facility follows a path from the outside, through the inlet cool cell or other inlet components, under/below the space and, finally, out the fans. Understanding the path air takes and how the path interacts with the driving force helps ensure a well-designed and fully-operating mining ventilation system. STATIC PRESSURE Static pressure is used to evaluate the amount of impact various ventilation system components have on the airflow path within a given system. For mechanical ventilation systems, the fans create positive static pressure to move air through a given system. All other components create negative static pressure that causes resistance to air moving through a system. A mechanical ventilation system operates with the static pressure in balance. The positive static pressure created by the fans equals the negative static pressure created by resistance as air navigates obstacles in the ventilation path. CONCLUSION • Fans of the same diameter are not all created equal. Airflow capacity at different static pressures varies depending upon fan make and model. • Increasing the static pressure a fan must operate against reduces the amount of airflow delivered by fan. • The fan blades are over 4 inches causing extreme static pressure resistance even without adding the cubic feet of area in the ducting. ***I am not a financial adviser. Antminer S9 experiment. S9 Bitcoin miner fan shroud testing 4",5",6" cooling fan shroud test

12:34
Here it is! The Antminer s9 fan shrouding test video. I am using my Antminer s9 as the asic miner for this experiment . Antminer cooling s9 with these fan shrouds, see the test video. I am donating my antminer s9 to the name of science for this experiment !!!!! =) SORRY ABOUT THE SHAKINESS AND WIND SOUND IN THE CAMERA, I ONLY HAD MYSELF TO TAKE THE VIDEO. MinerDigi Official Donation Addresses, support appreciated! BTC- 3NNPa5RrivVptbXNrZzHD3YBwBpcEq6eKB ETH - 0xb495EC3cC5eD85962405AD957844964186F82437 Okay guys, So we are testing the difference of the fan shrouding that are commonly used on the antminer s9 for cooling then or attaching ducting. =) Comment what you think the next video should be and or some cool new designs we can try!!!! XFX 6870 emergency fan replacement

03:06
Update: the replacement has been running fine until 25.7.2015 and doesn't seem to have any issues had to clean dust out of it once but that is all. My fan kept making some weird noise for a while and then just died entirely. Had to do emergency repairs to keep the computer running while I get proper replacement parts. I couldn't just take the heatsink off as I don't have any replacement cooling compound, and because of that I couldn't remove the fan wiring the normal way.
