From Kyrgyzstan with love
“I love my country, Kyrgyzstan. I love the scenery, I love the people of Kyrgyzstan and I want to see my country flourish so that the people find satisfaction in their lives, so that they benefit from our natural resources and so that our country remains as beautiful as ever.” So says Kalia Moldogazieva as she sets off on a journey to two different mining areas in her country - one where she has been able to work closely with local authorities, mining companies and the community and one where she has not been in six years. Kalia’s goal, and that of her NGO Tree of Life –a PWYP member-, is to help local communities living in extractive regions access information and be empowered to take part in decisions made over how projects are carried out and where the mining profits of their districts should be directed. Watch this film to see Kalia’s journey unfold and find out what happens where dialogue is promoted, or where voices are ignored. Produced by Fat Rat Films.

Demonstrations in Kyrgyz capital Bishkek against proposed mining of country's glaciers
Courtesy to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Demonstrators in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, marched outside parliament to protest a proposed law that would allow mining in the country's glaciers. Carrying signs that read "don't touch our glaciers," the protesters denounced legislation that would permit mining companies to drill through glacial sheets to extract gold and other resources beneath the ice. The November 8 march came after the controversial bill passed through the parliamentary committee stage. Kyrgyzstan has thousands of glaciers which have been shrinking in size, and environmental groups warn that mining would accelerate the melting of glacial ice. Mining has already taken place in Kyrgyzstan's Davydov glacier, and the bill would enshrine the practice in to law, allowing it to continue. The bill could be passed by the Kyrgyz parliament as early as next week.
What do Mining Resource Companies Do?
What do Mining Resource Companies Do? Amanda van Dyke: Mining Analyst and Fund Manager comments. Please like this video to support us if you have found it useful. They dig the stuff out of the ground and sell it! A mining company is a broad term; it tends to cover a whole umbrella of companies at different stage of development. I tend to difference between mining companies and exploration companies. The reality is that resources are scarce and finding them is increasingly difficult. Developing mines takes lot of time and money as well as infrastructure. Moving rock efficiently is difficult and processing it is also time-intensive. When the prices of metal are low, you have no real incentive to go out and find new mines and if you don't find new mines then the tendency is that over time there will be shortages.

Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines
Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? C O N F I D E N T I A L SECTION 01 OF 04 BISHKEK 001095 C O R R E C T E D C O P Y (ADDRESSEE) SIPDIS DEPT FOR SCA/CEN (GORKOWSKI) EO 12958 DECL: 10/29/2018 TAGS PREL, ECON, KG SUBJECT: CANDID DISCUSSION WITH PRINCE ANDREW ON THE KYRGYZ ECONOMY AND THE "GREAT GAME" REF: BISHKEK 1059 BISHKEK 00001095 001.4 OF 004 Classified By: Amb. Tatiana Gfoeller, Reason 1.4 (b) and (d). ¶1. (C) SUMMARY: On October 28, the Ambassador participated in a two-hour brunch to brief HRH the Duke of York ahead of his meetings with the Kyrgyz Prime Minister and other high-level officials. She was the only non-subject of the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth invited to participate by the British Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic. Other participants included major British investors in Kyrgyzstan and the Canadian operator of XXXXXXXXXXXX. The discussion covered the investment climate for Western firms in the Kyrgyz Republic, the problem of corruption, the revival of the "Great Game," Russian and Chinese influence in the country, and the Prince's personal views on promoting British economic interests. Astonishingly candid, the discussion at times verged on the rude (from the British side). END SUMMARY. ¶2. (C) British Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Paul Brummell invited the Ambassador to participate in briefing His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, ahead of his October 28 meetings with Kyrgyz Prime Minister Igor Chudinov and other high-level officials. The Prince was in Kyrgyzstan to promote British economic interests. Originally scheduled to last an hour over brunch, the briefing ended up lasting two hours, thanks to the super-engaged Prince's pointed questions. The Ambassador was the only participant who was not a British subject or linked to the Commonwealth. The absence of her French and German colleagues was notable; they were apparently not invited despite being fellow members of the European Union. Others included major British investors in Kyrgyzstan and the Canadian operator of the Kumtor mine. PLAYING THE GREAT GAME (BY EXTENSION THE AMERICANS TOO) --------------------------------------------- ---------- ¶9. (C) Addressing the Ambassador directly, Prince Andrew then turned to regional politics. He stated baldly that "the United Kingdom, Western Europe (and by extension you Americans too") were now back in the thick of playing the Great Game. More animated than ever, he stated cockily: "And this time we aim to win!" Without contradicting him, the Ambassador gently reminded him that the United States does not see its presence in the region as a continuation of the Great Game. We support Kyrgyzstan's independence and sovereignty but also welcome good relations between it and all of its neighbors, including Russia. ¶10. (C) The Prince pounced at the sound of that name. He told the Ambassador that he was a frequent visitor to Central Asia and the Caucasus and had noticed a marked increase in Russian pressure and concomitant anxiety among the locals post-August events in Georgia. He stated the following story related to him recently by Azerbaijan's President Aliyev. Aliyev had received a letter from President Medvedev telling him that if Azerbaijan supported the designation of the Bolshevik artificial famine in Ukraine as "genocide" at the United Nations, "then you can forget about seeing Nagorno-Karabakh ever again." Prince Andrew added that every single other regional President had told him of receiving similar "directive" letters from Medvedev except for Bakiyev. He asked the Ambassador if Bakiyev had received something similar as well. The Ambassador answered that she was not aware of any such letter.

InvestorIntel Exclusive: Stans Energy Targeted by Chinese Rare Earths Interests in Kyrgyzstan
April 19, 2013 -- This is an exclusive ProEdgeWire interview that exposes the efforts of a Chinese government backed rare earths group to prevent Stans Energy ('Stans', TSXV: HRE) from developing its wholly owned Kutessay II project in Kyrgyzstan. ProEdgeWire Publisher Tracy Weslosky comments: "I am pleased to have Robert Mackay, the CEO of Stans Energy, here to reveal the intriguing details that finally shed light on why Stans has had to endure so many legal battles in running its heavy rare earths mine. Moreover, I also welcome Alastair Neil, a respected professional, with over 20-years of experience in the rare earth sector. Alastair provides additional evidence to corroborate the suspicions of Chinese interference. The suspicions were raised by the fact that Stans acquired its property in 2009 with the full backing of the Kyrgyz Parliament. In 2011, Stans completed the purchase of the local Kashkinsky plant of rare earth elements, specialized in the processing of rare earth elements from the Kutessay-2 field during Soviet times, delivering up to 80% of the USSR's rare earth supply." In this exclusive report, Robert summarizes the events and circumstances leading to its discovery of a veritable plot to take its operating license away involving Chinese government backed miners and Kyrgyz members of parliament. He states: "In this interview, I will be disclosing, for the first time, details of an orchestrated attack against our company, by a Chinese organization, with ties to public figures in Kyrgyzstan. The information I am about to disclose is legally sensitive", said Robert, reading from a prepared script in order to ensure the accuracy of the details and in view of the legally sensitive nature of the information. The details are rich with intrigue worthy of a spy novel, involving political personalities, Chinese company executives and direct evidence of attempts to 'purchase' officials. The evidence for such claims comes from emails, correspondence and court documents as well as witness accounts. "Stans Energy is facing renewed legal action from a Kyrgyz State Prosecutor's office that is being spearheaded by specific members of the Ar-Namys Party", said Robert, showing the emails that confirm this. One of these reads: "Our company have get Chinese government support, if you are not cooperate with us for next step, we will search National large listed enterprises to cooperate to develop this project". Ultimately the orchestrated attack against Stans prove the strategic value of owning and operating a HREE deposit with known metallurgy, such as Kutessay II and the need to establish safe and secures supplies of REE for Western firms seeking to escape Chinese dominance of the industry. Disclaimer: Stans Energy Corp. is a ProEdgeWire: Rare Earths & Critical Minerals sponsor.

It serves as Iran's only oceanic port, and consists of two separate ports named Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti, each of which has five berths.[1] India-Iran-Afghanistan MoU and plans have committed at least $21bn to Chabahar-Hajigak corridor, including $85m for Chabahar port development by India,[2] $150m line of credit by India to Iran,[2] $8bn India-Iran MoU for Indian industrial investment in Chabahar Special Economic Zone,[3] $11-billion Hajigak iron and steel mining project awarded to seven Indian companies in central Afghanistan, and India's $2bn commitment to Afghanistan for developing supporting infrastructure including the Chabahar-Hajigaj railway, with potential for several times more trade via connectivity to 7,200-km-long multi-mode North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) connecting to Europe and Turkey, R297 Amur highway and Trans-Siberian Highway across Russia,[5] and planned Herat to Mazar-i-Sharif railway providing access to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.[5] Chabahar Port also provides direct access to India's Farkhor Air Base in Tajikistan. Chabahar route will result in 60% reduction in shipment costs and 50% reduction in shipment time from India to Central Asia. Development of the port was first proposed in 1973 by the last Shah of Iran, though development was delayed by the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The first phase of the port was opened in 1983 during the Iran–Iraq War as Iran began shifting seaborne trade east towards the Pakistani border in order to decrease dependency on ports in the Persian Gulf which were vulnerable to attack by the Iraqi Air Force ˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍˍ Disclaimer : DISCLAIMER: Please Don't Go Out Of Your Way To Or Hate On Anyone I Talk About In My Videos, This Channel Is To Educate People And I Usually Focus On Educate About What The People Are Doing Not The Individual Themselves, Please Don't Go Spreading Hate It's All For Educate. West African Truckers (Documentary)
West African truck drivers spend days, weeks, and sometimes months dealing with corrupt border officials and illegal checkpoints on harrowing delivery trips that should take just a few hours. -- The truck driver holds a mythic stature in American music, from the hayseed hagiographies of Slim Jacobs and Bobby Sykes to the liner notes of Big Black's Songs About Fucking. There aren't as many country songs about African truckers, but they are no less the virile champions of industry and gluteal fortitude as their US counterparts. On their backs rest the burden of an entire continent's economic development and through their bloodstreams runs a hell of a lot of the continent's HIV. Trade in West Africa is perennially fucked, partially because the colonial powers of the 19th and early 20th centuries chopped the place up into a pizza pie of nonsensical borders, but also because most post-colonial governments in the area were so unabashedly corrupt we had to coin the term "kleptocracy" to describe them. Driving a semi full of margarine a US state's length to its delivery point often involves passing through 3-4 separate countries and navigating the byzantine customs and immigration processes at each port of entry. Then there are the internal checkpoints manned by local police and customs agents on the lookout for smugglers, or non-smugglers who can be intimidated into coughing up a bribe. Then there's just fuckers who'll pull you over and straight-up rob you. Infrastructure ain't always so hot here, either. All of which turns shipments which would take a few hours in Europe or America into grueling, day-cum-week-cum-monthlong affairs punctuated by long and unpredictable periods of complete standstill. Which, in addition to wasting fuel and driving up the cost of goods with every unplanned stop, also fuels the sort of boredom that can only be fought by dumping money into the less savory sectors of the economy. Namely booze sales and roadside prostitution. Which is where the AIDS come in. Intrigued by the African long-haul trucker's dual reputation as the foundational building block of West Africa's would-be robust economy and lotharious Johnny AIDS-leseed, we hitched a ride with a trailer full of soap to see just how hard it is to get from point-A to point-basically-A-and-a-half. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Marco Arana, former priest and environmentalist: "We are going to present some legislative proposals, first of all to consider the water (supply) as a human right -and not like it happens now that the priority is for those who have power or influence - and to ban the mining in basin or glacier areas." 10. Various of protesters with flags and banners marching 11. Close of indigenous woman carrying flowers and chanting: (Spanish) "Water yes, gold no!" 12. Mid of protesters marching 13. Wide of anti riot police guarding the protest STORYLINE: The "National Water March" arrived in Lima on Thursday after travelling, mostly by trucks and buses, from Cajamarca where protesters are objecting to the country's biggest gold mining project. Approximately 1,500 protesters, carrying banners, flags and some dressed in traditional clothes, marched through Lima streets to demand a ban to mining projects in areas where there are river basins or glaciers. "We are going to present some legislative proposals, first of all to consider the water (supply) as a human right," said Marco Arana, an environmentalist who participated in the protest. The protest started on February 1st in the Andean region of Cajamarca - north of the country- where the inhabitants rejected the mining project "Conga" - owned by U.S. based Newton Mining corp. According to the protesters - most of them farmers and indigenous people - the mining project will destroy four lakes in the area, damaging their water supply in the process. The Conga mine would produce gold and copper as well as silver. Cajamarca is one of Peru's most heavily mined regions and many residents have little faith in the new project because it is an extension of nearby Yanacocha mine, Latin America's largest gold mine, which is nearing the end of production. The Conga mine project has a history of troubled relations with neighbouring farmers, ranchers and city dwellers downstream who claim it has harmed water supplies. The Peruvian government proposed a group of international experts to monitor the project, but the protesters rejected the idea because the experts would be chosen by the government and the protesters believe they are not going to be unbiased. Chaarat Gold Holdings Ltd eyeing start of mine construction next year
Dekel Golan, chief executive of Chaarat Gold Holdings Limited (LON:CGH) told Proactive everything seemed to be 'going' well for the company currently. It came after it emerged the group was raising £4.1mln of new capital to cover the costs of completing the bankable feasibility study for the Tulkubash heap leach gold project, in the Kyrgyz Republic. "We raised as little as we could although there was more demand," said Golan, referring to the attempt to dilute shareholders as little as possible. The project is expected to be yield some 60,000 to 70,000 ounce per year once operational and the bankable feasibility study is due to be completed by the end of next year, and it is anticipated that the permitting process in Kyrgyz will be substantially concluded in the third quarter of 2017. "Everything seems to be going for us and we think it's a very attractive project." Golan said financing to build the mine will still need to be finalised but he hoped construction should start by the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018. He said the project looks extremely attractive and highlighted that the heap leach project only represented 13% of the overall Chaarat project. He said being in production with a simple, low heap leach project will allow the firm to "ramp up and increase production quite significantly". Last week, it emerged the largest shareholder was to join the board of the company as non-executive chairman. The company has appointed Martin Andersson, who holds his Charaat stake through Labro Investments. An additional director, Martin Wiwen-Nilsson, an associate of Andersson, will also be appointed as a non-executive director.

Stans Energy Chairman provides an update on international arbitration case
April 9, 2014 -- Rodney Irwin, Chairman and acting President of Stans Energy Corp.('Stans', TSX-V: HRE | OTCQX: HREEF) speaks to Tracy Weslosky, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of InvestorIntel about the complexities of Kyrgyzstan and how Stans has managed to deal with them and one of the most recent and flagrant examples has been the Inter-District Court of Bishkek ruling in favor of the Kyrgyz General Prosecutor's Office (SPO) with respect to its claim regarding Stans' Kutessay II Project. The decision, as it stands, would essentially imply the annulment of Stans' whole license acquisition process. Stans has regularly defended itself, producing all relevant documents filed since the outset of its venture. Rodney says that Stans "is waiting for a written decision from the Court [of Bishkek] and then we'll take it for appeal to a higher court." Nevertheless, Stans remains optimistic and maintains an active operations timeline "although the Kyrgyz Government is never above throwing you a curve; and one of the curves simply means that the government has fallen and that we'll have a new one." That always means that officials and ministers change and you have to go through a period to get them back working and signing documents. But, we feel that we've stayed on target with our principal issue, which is our international arbitration where we're suing the government of Kyrgyzstan for effectively preventing us from working on developing our mine and we think that that the arbitration process is going to come to a conclusion fairly shortly." Rodney expects that Stans will be slowed down by a matter of months, if not weeks, and that in the grand scheme "it's not all that serious" a delay. There may even be a benefit. Rodney says that the recent decision by the Court "supports our arbitration case, where we have said that effectively the government has prevented us from being able to develop our mining property. And this case, which the Government has brought against us and has won in the interim, until we go to appeal, presents us with more evidence that we can deliver to the arbitration court, not permitting us to develop my mining property is effectively an expropriation." On the technical side, aside from the emerging market risk, Stans offers a great advantage in that "we have taken over a project that historically operated in the good old days of the USSR. This was a rare earth mine that produced a lot of rare earths and when the USSR collapsed, this mine was effectively closed down." Moreover, the mine has an associated processing plant, which Stans purchased and has been putting back together. This means that Stans has the right metallurgy to produce the oxides and metals. In the Soviet period, the Kashka Rare Earth Processing Plant (KRP), as it was known, was used to produce some 120 different metals, alloys, and oxides. The Kutessay-2 field during Soviet times delivered up to 80% of the USSR's rare earth supply. Kutessay-2 contains up to 15 rare-earth elements, as well as lead, zinc, silver, bismuth, molybdenum, thorium, tin, and copper. In addition, it contains niobium, tantalum and hafnium. The only obstacle standing between Stans moving to full operation is the Government's obstruction, which will be dealt by the arbitration process. Slaves To Gold: How Women Escape Rape in DRC (2013)

Driven from their land, they work in mines as slaves in a desperate bid to protect themselves from rape. "They came into houses and raped and killed children. They raped my two-year-old daughter," recounts Irene, who is now living in the UK. Since 1997, various militias have been fighting for Congo's vast mineral wealth in a bitter conflict for which women are largely paying the price. "Women are the biggest victim because they are raped every single day." Forced to work at gold and other mines in conditions of slavery, women are caught in the crossfire of competing militias who launder the minerals and smuggle them out of the region to be processed for manufacture by 'respectable' corporations. Despite the vast wealth generated by their work they eke out a meagre existence, sometimes being paid nothing at all. Meanwhile the rapes continue. With companies still not required to say where the minerals they use originate from, no one is taking responsibility. "They have to stop what is happening there. No one should suffer like that."
