How FinTech is Shaping the Future of Banking | Henri Arslanian | TEDxWanChai
While FinTech is revolutionizing the banking industry and giving millions of people access to financial services for the first time, new banking models are emerging with FinTech start-ups and tech firms potentially disrupting the status quo. But business schools and universities are not preparing future bankers for these changes, says FinTech thought leader Henri Arslanian. How can designers, programmers and creative thinkers help? Henri Arslanian started his career as a financial markets and funds lawyer in Canada and Hong Kong, after which he spent many years with UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong. In recent years, he has been teaching graduate courses on Entrepreneurship in Finance at Hong Kong University as an Adjunct Associate Professor, and currently leads the first FinTech course in Asia. His latest book on Entrepreneurship in Finance will be published in late 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan. A member of the Milken Institute’s Young Leaders Circle, Henri is a regular keynote speaker globally on the topic of FinTech and hedge funds and currently sits on a number of finance, academic, civil society and FinTech related boards and advisory boards. Henri is fluent in English, French, Armenian, Spanish and conversational in Mandarin Chinese and has been awarded many academic and industry awards over the years, including the Governor General of Canada Gold Medal for Academic Excellence. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

5 Business Trends for 2018
The year 2018 will be a crucial year for electric vehicles. Manufacturers are speeding up production plans as cities pass new regulations restricting the use of internal combustion engines. At the same time, IESE Professor Marc Sachon notes that another new and different challenge is emerging: what to do with old batteries. Recycling is expensive and countries like China still haven’t invested in that area; secondary markets for used batteries as home generators are small. Also to watch out for: the geopolitics of sources of two strategic minerals in batteries: lithium and cobalt. Zaire holds half the reserves of cobalt, and 60% of lithium reserves are concentrated in just three countries. Cartelization risks, says professor Juan Luis López Cardenete, should not be overlooked. Sustainability is also a crucial trend for the food and beverage industry. Consumers are pushing for healthier, organic and local products. The US has seen the rise of the first companies rating sustainability, explains professor Adrián Caldart, and positive marks can triple demand for some products. In the healthcare sector, sharing information on health outcomes is the main trend. According to Professor Núria Mas, this will shift the debate to what’s really important, measuring whether implementation is efficient, instead of focusing on whether the provider is public or private. Finally, for 2018 banks are expected to recover their profitability as interest rates rise. But as their core business becomes more attractive, Professor Juan José Toribio warns that new and potentially disruptive entrants such as Google or Amazon might start providing financial services.

Investment Outlook from Global Industry Titans
Private equity deal value for 2015 proved resilient as reported global buyouts reached $282 billion, about 5 percent more than the previous year. But as values climb, private equity firms find themselves competing more and more with deep-pocketed corporate buyers seeking growth via acquisitions. Among them is a growing number of Asian buyers snapping up strategically positioned U.S. and European companies and trophy assets. These trends are making reasonably valued buyout targets difficult to find, raising more questions about how the PE industry will maintain decent returns on capital invested. This panel of private equity titans will address the major challenges facing the industry and highlight the opportunities. What are the key elements of a successful deal, and how have those dynamics changed over the years? Are mega-buyouts a thing of the past? Which industries are most attractive now for PE investors -- and do those industries differ across the U.S., Asia and Europe? What are the highest-priority considerations for PE investors at this point in the cycle? This session will examine major trends in private equity with a focus on the investment opportunities and the economic landscape. Should more private equity funds consider permanent capital vehicles for investing? Is the fee structure sustainable? Are too many firms chasing the same deals, crowding the market and making new targets harder to find? Are multi-strategy funds still plausible or does the industry need more specialization? Will we ever see a return of mega-buyouts?

Focus on Funds: Key Investment Trends in the Fund Industry
(Transcript is below) At ICI’s 2016 General Membership Meeting, several leading portfolio managers detailed the economic trends that they expect will drive investment decisions. The July 1, 2016, edition of Focus on Funds offers a recap by panel moderator and CNBC anchor Tyler Mathisen. For more information on key investment trends in the fund industry, please visit http://gmm.ici.org/gmm/2016/16_videos. ___________________________ Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, ICI Director, Media Relations: What are some of the key influencers on where money is going to go in the mutual fund and ETF industry this year? At ICI’s General Membership Meeting, CNBC anchor Tyler Mathisen got some insights from some of the industry’s leading portfolio managers. And here are some insights he shared with me afterwards. Tyler Mathisen, CNBC Anchor: I think that both of the panelists—Krishna Memani of Oppenheimer, and Liz Ann Sonders of Schwab—are basically of the view that the next decade or so is going to be an era of relatively muted total returns in stock and bond portfolios. One of the reasons being, that the great tailwind of falling interest rates that has really been at play over the past 30-some years is, or is coming to, an end in the United States. Economic growth is slow. Some of the revolutionary change ushered in by the computer and the Internet—we’re not in the ninth inning of that, we’re certainly nowhere near that, but we’re not in the first inning anymore. So, look for mid-single-digit returns in stocks, and maybe a little lower in bonds. I think one of the other takeaways—not only from the panel I just did, but from the prior one—is look for more product innovation and maybe more complexity in products, because the buzzword is multi-asset products. Those products may succeed, they may not—there will be a lot of trial and error, I’m sure—but what is definitely going to happen is that it’s going to be incumbent upon investment advisers, companies, to be able to explain those products succinctly. What do they do? What role do they play? How do they work? What can you expect from them? And that’s sort of takeaway number two. Ortbals-Tibbs: It’s also very clear that the search for yield is on. Mathisen: It’s going to remain difficult to get yield. And you’re going to have to look for income in places that aren’t the traditional places. Krishna kept talking about, “Where can I get a good bond?” Well, they’re hard to find. We’re also coming from a period where the dollar in international currency markets was quite weak. That was good for U.S. multinational companies that were selling overseas. [Now,] the dollar has strengthened. It yo-yoed back and weakened a little over the last year, but look for the dollar to get stronger again. And that is going to act as a bit of a pullback on American economic output and our ability to sell goods overseas at competitive prices. So, that’s a restraint. Low interest rates are certainly going to help, but those interest rates are going to go up a little bit. That could be a restraint as well.
