Web Server: Enable Directory Listing / Directory Browsing with .htaccess & create files with no name

04:39
Web Servers hide the contents of folders by default. If there’s no index.html or index.php file, it will show a "403 Forbidden" error. That means that the folder exists, but you don’t have access to it. Different from a "404 Not Found" error, meaning no such folder exists. If you want to see the files inside all folders, you need to put this .htaccess file in the directory you want to enable Download htaccess zip http://www.mediafire.com/download/qm398c6l99xl8o8/htaccess+File+Inside.zip UnZip it and it should work. (This is if you’re having trouble creating files with no name, only an extension) ➤Create .htaccess file -Open notepad (or other text editor) -Save a blank file called ".htaccess" (no filename just an extension) -Make sure you change the "Save as Type" dropdown from "Text Document *.txt" to "All files" -Use ftp software to copy the .htaccess file to your web server -You might need to "Show hidden files" in order to see it ➤Configuring htaccess ➨"Options +Indexes" -Adding this enables the list of files in the folder -Capitalization doesn’t matter -You can comment out lines with a hashtag/number sign (#) ➨"IndexOptions FancyIndexing" -This changes the display ➨"Options -Indexes" -this hides the listings. Add a new .htaccess file in a subfolder to disable directory listing in that folder and keep it active in the containing folder ➨"DirectoryIndex 1.txt" -This sets the default page to load instead of index.html or index.php (as long as 1.txt exists) ➨"IndexIgnore *.txt *.doc" -This excludes any files with the extension txt & doc from the list -They’re still accessible by direct URL, but just won’t show up if directory listing is enabled More Detailed video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsaaVCB55dQ

.htaccess, Configure and Test | 500 Internal Server Error

06:05
like / subscribe :-) .htaccess | Configuring and Testing Custom Error Responses | 500 Internal Server Error page example Author: Dmytro Dzyubak http://www.dzyubak.com intro and outro music by Dmytro Dzyubak Transcript Configuring and testing customized 500 Internal Server Error page using .htaccess file. Testing the custom 500 error page is actually trickier then one might think! Because usually we won't be able to trigger it neither with PHP code nor with the error intentionally made in the .htaccess file itself. The foregoing behaviour will be demonstrated in the examples that follow. But let's first look at the contents of our DocumentRoot. What concerns us is an .htaccess file, 500.html, buggy.cgi, buggy.php and hello.cgi. "500 page" header centrally-aligned is what we eventually want to achieve showing up in our browser. So as I've already mentioned, we won't be able to trigger the output of this 500.html file with PHP code. For example, we can throw an exception (then open buggy.php to see the result) or introduce a fatal error directly (saving the document, refreshing the page) or send a raw 500 HTTP header (save the file, refresh). All these lines produce a blank page instead. We can confirm it by viewing the source. In fact, it is possible to trigger 500 status code, but not the custom 500.html page. Screwing up the .htaccess file itself, for example, with a double slash comment not valid in Apache produces a "generic error response" instead, but not our custom one that we need for testing our configuration. However, we can intentionally generate an error by using the CGI script. Actually, CGI script can be implemented in PHP, but that's usually not the case, so let's not overcomplicate this stuff. For CGI program to be executed properly by the server: enable the CGI module and restart the Apache. This procedure varies depending on the OS you use. For example, on Debian Linux these commands look like this. Elevate privileges with sudo (or just might be a root user). This (a2enmod) stands for Apache 2 enable module CGI. And CGI stands for common gateway interface. After that restart the Apache with "sudo service apache2 restart". Add the following lines to the .htaccess file. This line (Options +ExecCGI) specifies that CGI execution is permitted. And this one (AddHandler cgi-script .cgi) makes any file containing the .cgi extension to be treated as a CGI program. The CGI script has some garbage text that produces an error. Make the script executable (chmod 755 buggy.cgi) and "ls -l" to ensure that the changes have been applied. The following output shows that executable bit has been set on the buggy.cgi file. Now we access our buggy.cgi script. (I type buggy.cgi and hit Enter.) Ultimately we can see that our custom 500.html file is served when we have some problems with the server. And just in case you've been wondering how a valid CGI script might look like, here I've added hello.cgi script. Navigating to hello.cgi gives the following output.

What is .htaccess? - Apache .htaccess Guide & Tutorial

01:57
.htaccess is a configuration file for use on web servers running the Apache Web Server software. When a .htaccess file is placed in a directory which is in turn 'loaded via the Apache Web Server', then the .htaccess file is detected and executed by the Apache Web Server software. These .htaccess files can be used to alter the configuration of the Apache Web Server software to enable/disable additional functionality and features that the Apache Web Server software has to offer. These facilities include basic redirect functionality, for instance if a 404 file not found error occurs, or for more advanced functions such as content password protection or image hot link prevention. How to hide your website files from Visitors

05:59
How to Prevent a Directory Listing of Your Website with .htaccess by H3X KH4N. If you create a new directory (or folder) on your website, and do not put an "index.html" file in it, you may be surprised to find that your visitors can get a directory listing of all the files in that folder. For example, if you create a folder called "incoming", you can see everything in that directory simply by typing "http://www.example.com/incoming/" in your browser. No password or anything is needed. This article shows you how you can configure your web server so that it does not show a directory listing by default. Prerequisites Your Website Must Be on an Apache Web Server For the method described in this article to work, your site should be hosted on an Apache web server. This probably constitutes the majority of websites on the Internet, so it is likely that you satisfy this requirement. In general, if your web server (the computer that your site is running on) is using Linux or FreeBSD, chances are that it's on an Apache server. If your server is using Windows, your website is probably not using Apache. Note that I'm talking about the computer hosting your website, not your own personal computer. If you're not sure, ask your web host. Your Web Host Must Have Enabled .htaccess Server Overrides In addition to being hosted on an Apache web server, your web host needs to have enabled server overrides. This facility allows you to modify the web server configuration from your own website. In practice, this usually means that your website is hosted on a commercial web host rather than a free one. Free web hosts normally don't allow websites hosted on them to change the web server behaviour. Both the above conditions must be true, or you won't be able to successfully do the things mentioned in this guide. Is Protecting Your Directory Listing From View a Security Measure? Protecting your directories from being listed by your website's visitors does not, in and of itself, make your website more secure. At best, it's security by obscurity — that is, you hope that by hiding stuff from view, nefarious visitors up to no good will not be able to get access to those things. It's the web equivalent of hiding your life savings under your mattress. However, while you should of course implement other measures for securing your site, it's still good practice not to allow your directories to be listed by default. That way, at least, you don't make it too easy for others to survey your site for vulnerabilities. This is especially so if you have third-party scripts on your site (such as, for example, you run a blog). It's important to realise this, so that you don't rely on this method alone for security. Make a Backup of the .htaccess File If you managed to find and download the .htaccess file from your site, save a backup copy on your own computer. That is, make sure you have 2 copies of the .htaccess file on your computer, the one you are about to modify, and a pristine copy of the original. The backup is useful in case you accidentally make an error later. Create or Open the .htaccess File If you've managed to get the .htaccess file, open it in an ASCII text editor (like Notepad). If one does not exist, use the editor to create a new blank document. The rest of this article will assume that you have already started the editor with the .htaccess open or with a blank document if no .htaccess file previously existed. WARNING: do not use a wordprocessor like Word, Office, or WordPad to create or edit your .htaccess file. You should also not use a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) web editor for this purpose. If you do, your site will mysteriously fail to work when you upload the file to your web server. This is very important. There are no exceptions. Disable Indexing Add the following line to your .htaccess file. Options -Indexes Conclusion: If all goes well, you should get a "Forbidden" error when you try to access a directory that doesn't have an index file.

How to Redirect In WordPress - Using Htaccess or Plugin

10:15
Learn two different ways to make a 301 redirection in WordPress. I have decided to show two different options an easy method and one, which is a bit harder . For you to quickly skip to the section you want, just use the time stamp shown below... When Should Use 301 Redirect? You have plenty of situation, which you should use this option. For instance, when you remove a web-page in your website. Usually, people think it disappears from the Internet. But their web-page is still indexed in the search engines. As a result, your visitors will still find it there and in most cases, enter into a web-page without any content. For this reason, you should redirect your visitors to another web-page. Where they are able to find the information they want. You may also use redirections when you decide to purchase several domain names. Let's say, you get a .org, .info etc... because you don't someone else buying them and building a website with a similar domain name. You may after redirect all those domain names to your main website. 1 - Plugin Installation The easiest option is to simply install a WordPress plugin and use one of its options. Just in a matter of a few seconds, you'll be able to redirect any page you want from your website. If you prefer a cleaner alternative then use the second method. 2 - .Htaccess Just login to your web-host cpanel, search for file manager and select the right website from the listing. 1 - Make a backup of your .htaccess file before you configure anything 2 - Select the htaccesss file and press edit 3 - Insert the following line below all the coding 301 htaccess oldurl (paste the extension from the url) newurl (paste the full url from the location you want to send your visitors) Thanks for watching. How to protect a folder with htaccess password (using cPanel)

02:38
Today in this tutorial we'll be learning how to password protect your folder in your home directory with cPanel. For that you need to log into your cPanel. So once you enter the username and password you can press login. Now you're redirected to your cPanel dashboard. In the section “files” you press “file manager”. This is the home directory you can see the options here (see timecode 0:50) I want to password protect public_html If you click this, this are all the options that are stored in this. So now we create a new folder by clicking this. In the root directory we create a folder with the name password protect so create a folder. So if you right click on this, you have the option of password protect. Press that. So these is a new page where you can manage the several, the access to your password protect folder and create a user for that. So you can create a password protect directory by the same name of the folder that you just created so it will be easier for you to remember. Press “save”. So the access permission for that has been granted, now go back and now you can create a user. So you can create a user with the same name and you can use a simple symbol like one. Now create a password. This is the strength of the password that you just entered manually. If you see you have to option to use system generated password, you click this. This is a password that you can use directly. Either case you can set advanced permissions to strengthen your password, like you can use lowercase, uppercase, numbers or both. If you confirm you can press “use password” or simply press “cancel” Now press “save” So this user has been created. You can see the authorized users is this password protect one. If you want to delete this, you can press this. So now you can go back and manage several applications similarly. We hope the tutorial was helpful. Thanks for watching the video.

In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to protect your .htaccess file from unauthorized access. The .htaccess file is used to do a lot of things on your website including securing it. However, if you don't protect this file as well, then your website is still vulnerable. This works on a website on any Apache server, not just WordPress sites. Let's put that code into your .htaccess file and secure WordPress. First login into your hosting account cPanel. Then find and click on the File Manager icon and choose the Document Root for the website that you are hardening. This will open the root of the website in another tab. You can also log into the website root using FTP if you are more comfortable with that. If you do not see a .htaccess in the website right then you can make one by clicking Add New File in the File Manager or right-clicking and choosing Create New File via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Open the .htaccess file and paste the code from above into it. There is no need to make adjustments to the code. Once pasted in just save the file and you're done. Now you've done your better WordPress security for the day. Time to take a break! Or better yet, watch the next video. I hope this information helps you! Force HTTPS Redirect on WordPress websites via plugin or htaccess edit

04:11
Having an SSL certificate is a must if you want display trust to users so when you go through the trouble of getting one and updating your URLs to https you want it to show for everyone. The problem is if users type your websites address they will get the insecure http site unless you take the steps to force redirect https for all users. Luckily this is very easy thing to do novice and experience web developers or site admins alike. There are two ways to get it done. The first is quick and dirty and just requires installing and activating a great light wight plugin called Really Simple Plugin. You can see the plugin page here https://wordpress.org/plugins/really-simple-ssl/ The second way you will need higher level credentials to the either your CPanel account or the equivalent to get to your site's .htaccess file to add new rules. ** CODE ** Understandably YouTube does not allow certain symbols in this description box, like brackets, that is in the code, please visit the article on my site to get the rules you saw in the video. https://the1ck.com/force-https-protocol-wordpress-site-everyone/ ** /CODE ** Adding these rules is the same process that the plugin did automatically. But I prefer to not install plugins that are not entirely necessary. If you have any questions or suggestions don't hesitate to ask below, thanks! Working Without FTP Access - WP htaccess control

05:14
WP htaccess Control Plugin Page: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-htaccess-control/ Are you having issues without FTP Access? In this video, Anthony the WordPress Guy from Cloud Sites by Rackspace shows you how to use a plugin with WP htacces. For information on setting up WordPress hosting, visit our WordPress page at ‪http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/sites/....Here is the transcript of the video: Hey guys, Anthony here with another WordPress quick tip. Today I am going to be talking about editing your htaccess file if you don’t have FTP credentials. So I have found there is a plugin that will actually let you edit your htccess file and it will allow you to change things like maximum upload size or how your permalinks are handled. Big problems that you are going to have if you are only given WordPress access are not being able to upload large files because the default upload size is usually around 2 megs, which is usually not enough to get what you need done. So what this plugin in does is allow you to change that without every having to login to FTP. Okay, so we’re going to start in the plugin section of WordPress and you’re going to click on the “add new” button. Search for “WP htaccess”. What the htaccess is doing is it is setting the server size rules, and it is what handles the maximum upload size, the post max size, and things like that. Go ahead and install the first one, “WP htaccess Control”. There are other ones, but this is the one I prefer. It is much more user friendly. You don’t actually have to type and run the risk of having syntax errors. When it’s finished installing, click “activate”. Then hover over “settings” and click on “htaccess control”. This will take you to the settings for the plugin. As you can see, there are a ton of options, but I’m just going to get into the big ones. Let’s first look at the “htaccess Suggestions” section. Click and it will open up. You can protect the wp-config file or you can protect the htaccess file, and all this does is deny access to the public to those files. There is a ton you can do, but this is the part we want to focus on: “Limit Upload Size”. I get the request a lot that WordPress is saying it can’t upload anything larger than 2 megs. Well, this is where you can change that. Type in “20”. This is usually where I keep it. For “500 Error” or “403 Error”, you can set a custom path for error pages through a static html page however you want. All you have to do is point it to that file. This plugin has a lot of options, so let’s get into some other ones. “Custom Author Permalink” – you can set what you want your custom author to be or you can do a custom search permalink by typing in “/search/” and then whatever you are searching for. You can also do Custom htacces, so if you have specific rules, then you can enter that here. There is not a ton to this plugin, so you’re pretty much done. So with that, the plugin is configured. This solves the issue of not having FTP Access. If you do, then you certainly can go and edit yourself. Protect the wp-includes directory on your server

08:27
http://www.byobwebsite.com/answers/protect-the-wp-includes-directory-on-your-server/ To prevent someone from viewing the indexes you have, in particular the wp-includes directory, you need to edit the htaccess file. We show you how to go through the process in this video. The code used comes from the website www.splashnology.com/blog/wordpress/921.html. Video Transcript Oh protect directories on your server. And so, I guess this is it here. And so if we look at this yoursite.com/wp-includes, so if we do this... say wp-includes. So here we have in the wp-includes folder, the entire list of all of the files in our wp-includes. I wonder if the same thing happens with wp-content. It does not happen with wp-content but it certainly does with wp-includes. It's not going to be in wp-admin because that takes us directly to our login. So wp-includes is the one that's affected by this. And if we come back over to... okay, we can get out of that and that and log out of there. And then, so what this is saying is that in order to prevent somebody viewing the contents or indexes, what we'll do is we add this to our htaccess file -- so solution, edit the access file again. Okay, so copy this and I gotta log in again. It was just Firefox having problems. So now what we're doing is we are going to open up the htaccess file for banner1 and so we'll go back to file manager and banner1 and scroll down here to our htaccess, slide it there at the top or down at the very bottom. Isn't that interesting? So I don't have an htaccess set up in this directory unless I'm missing it here. No, it doesn't appear as if I do have one in this directory so I could create one. Let's go all the way to the root. So up one level, all the way to the root and see if I will find my htaccess file here...you know what, I think this is actually preventing...this isn't letting me see the htaccess file in this file manager. So I guess we have to do it from Filezilla. Okay, so if we go to banner1, actually let's just do it like in estore10. And let's see... got in WordPress and then look for HT access file here. HT access and then the root to this, okay. So now in this case, so this was estore10 so here if instead we go to www.estore10.byobtutorial.com/wp-includes okay so this also displays all that stuff. So what we want to do is make it so it doesn't display that, we go back to Filezilla and we open it. Actually, that's not readable. Open it up in NetBeans instead. So while waiting for this to pop up, actually... okay so are we live now? Almost. What we're going to do is we're just going to edit this and add that line to it. So file, open file... websites. And then Tailoring the Web, no. It's byobwebsite, tutorial sites, estore10, WordPress... there's the htaccess file. Okay, and so what he wants us to add to this is this Options All -- Indexes so we'll go back to that and just after WordPress, Options All -- Index... we save that. We upload it and go ahead and overwrite and we come back over to the site and we refresh it. And now it doesn't let you in. So that's a way of hiding these directory listings. You know, I don't really know how easy it is to exploit that but it is... but this is a solution to it. And so once again, I want to say this is at www.splashnology.com/blog/wordpress/921.html.
