By default, the decisions we make regarding marketing mix will be as good as our understanding of the target market. If we’ve done quality research, the likelihood of coming up with a good marketing mix combination increases. Four major variables shape a company’s marketing mix. These variables are known as the Four Ps of Marketing. Focusing on: • Product • Price • Place • And Promotion This has proven to be an effective way to understand the decisions a company makes when it enters a market and competes in it. If a company understands the needs of its customers, it can create products that satisfy the clients’ expectations and contain the features they desire; it will offer these products at a price that corresponds to the target market’s willingness to spend, and it will offer them where the target market loves to shop. It will also build its brand communication in a language that speaks to the target market. Marketing Mix and the Four Ps is intuitive. Marketing managers should concentrate on these variables and tailor them regarding the target market they’ve chosen to pursue.

What is a Target Market?

05:31
What is a target market and how do you find your target market? For help with marketing your small business please visit: http://www.SummerAlexanderResearch.com Summer Alexander shares the easiest definition of a target market you've ever heard plus three quick tips on how to define them. First, I will start with the technical definition of a target market via the all-knowing Wise One- Wikipedia: A target market is a group of customers that the business has decided to aim its marketing efforts and ultimately its merchandise towards. A well-defined target market is the first element to a marketing strategy. The target market and the marketing mix variables of product, place(distribution), promotion and price are the four elements of a marketing mix strategy that determine the success of a product in the marketplace. Next, I will provide you with my definition of a target market: The group of people who have a specific problem (that your company specifically solves), who know they have this problem, who are actively searching for a remedy to this problem, and -- here's the kicker -- can afford to pay for your solution to their problem. So let's talk about some ways to find them. #1 -- Guess Yup I said it. Guess. Not just pull a demographic out of the sky but give an educated guess. When you started your company who did you envision purchasing your products or services? Describe the type of people you really like to work with. Who do you think is the typical user of the products and services you provide? Who is the typical buyer? (note: may be different than the user) What kind of income do you think this customer would need to afford your services? What type of events typically trigger a customer to purchase from you? #2 -- Trial and Error This is one of my favorite strategies. I never really liked the idea of narrowing down your target market without having first worked with a few people first. I recommend a little trial and error when it comes to determining your target market. After you've come up with an educated guess, do some light (inexpensive) marketing to that group and see how it goes. Perhaps the group you thought would be ideal buyers are really just pains in the you-know-what. Do they haggle you over prices, refuse to return your phone calls, ask for more than what they are willing to pay for? Even though a market may sound good on paper or in your business plan, doesn't mean in real life they won't drive you nuts. After working with around 20-30 people you should be able to start narrowing down your market by plucking out those who aren't a good fit and finding the group who is their polar opposite. #3 -- Borrow In most cases there is no such thing as an ideal target market who know one else is selling to. Do some research on businesses who are similar to yours (also known as competitors) and see who it is they are marketing to. Search their Facebook and Twitter posts to see who's engaged with them. Check out customer rating sites like Yelp or Google Local to see what kind of feedback they are getting and from whom. Snoop around on their websites and see who is commenting on their blog posts and while you are there check out their testimonials page. Don't abuse this step by becoming a creepy competitor stalker but do use it to gain an understanding on what market your competitors (especially the successful ones) are advertising to and what prompts those buyer to purchase.

How to define a target market.

03:12
When marketing any product or service we need to start by defining our target. There is two types of marketing, Scatter Gun where you run marketing strategies that get you exposure to a wide range of people or business. Some may be interested in your product or service but the majority don’t. Sniper Gun where you specifically target people and business who you have a higher chance of needing your product or service. To get the most out of your marketing budget the sniper approach has proved to be much more effective. In order to run a sniper approach marketing activity first of all we need to define our target market. There is a number of ways you can define your target market but the more specific you can be the more selective you can be about the marketing strategies you use therefore giving much higher chance of getting a great return on your investment. When defining your target market there are many options and different criteria you can take into account. Here are some examples: 1) Is your business geographically restricted or do you want to build a customer base is a certain geographic area? If so define the area you are looking to market to. 2) Is your product or service gender specific? If so you can start to research and decide which strategy will attract the gender you are looking to do business with. 3) Is your product or service aimed at a business or individuals with a certain net worth or level of cash to spend? 4) Are there certain industries that your product or services sell better to? 5) Does your target market use a certain type of media to find the products and services they wish to purchase? For example the younger generation may use online media more than some older generations. 6) Do you have different unique selling propositions to different target markets? When you start to define in detail who it is you want to do business you can then start to look at what strategies would get you in front of your target market in the highest proportion. Your marketing should then become more efficient giving you a better return on your investment. When looking at your target a good place to start is to look internally at your current customers, is there a trend? Do you sell more to a certain type of person or business sector? A lot of businesses believe they have a wide diverse range of clients. Although this can be true breaking down your client base to find out who buys the most from you and more importantly who makes you the most profit can start to guide you to your best target markets. Once you have decided on your target market you need to make sure what you are promoting is attracting them, what do you need to tell the target market about your business? Different target markets will want to know different points about your business. For example what an accountant may feel is important about you may be different to what a manufacturing business feels is important about your product or service. Be specific and if you can find out from your current customers what they feel is the most important part of your product or service. Once you have decided on your target and strategies don’t forget to test and measure the results, giving you the visibility on what strategies are giving you the best return on your investment.

However, pricing decisions inconsistent with a firm’s competitive strategy can be dangerous, which is why companies should address the topic with much caution and attention. There are three important components we need to distinguish in this process. The amount a product costs to be produced, the price customers pay to buy the product, and the value they acquire from the product. If a company aims at cost leadership, then the focus will be costs (trying to keep them as low as possible). The company must offer a price slightly lower than the one offered by competitors. Conversely, if a firm’s strategy is differentiation, then the critical factor will be the value delivered to customers. Costs are not that important, as companies offering a differentiated product can charge more. So, pricing must be coherent with competitive strategy, although sometimes it is tempting to adjust prices to stimulate short-term gains of market share and increases of sales. Top-level managers have to stay focused on the big picture and make coherent decisions in line with the firm’s long-term strategy.

What is MARKETING STRATEGY? What does MARKETING STRATEGY mean?

03:30
What is MARKETING STRATEGY? What does MARKETING STRATEGY mean? Marketing strategy has the fundamental goal of increasing sales and achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. Marketing strategy includes all basic, short-term, and long-term activities in the field of marketing that deal with the analysis of the strategic initial situation of a company and the formulation, evaluation and selection of market-oriented strategies and therefore contribute to the goals of the company and its marketing objectives. The process usually begins with a scan of the business environment, both internal and external, which includes understanding strategic constraints. It is generally necessary to try to grasp many aspects of the external environment, including technological, economic, cultural, political and legal aspects. Goals are chosen. Then, a marketing strategy or marketing plan is an explanation of what specific actions will be taken over time to achieve the objectives. Plans can be extended to cover many years, with sub-plans for each year, although as the speed of change in the merchandising environment quickens, time horizons are becoming shorter. Ideally, strategies are both dynamic and interactive, partially planned and partially unplanned, to enable a firm to react to unforeseen developments while trying to keep focused on a specific pathway; generally, a longer time frame is preferred. There are simulations such as customer lifetime value models which can help marketers conduct "what-if" analyses to forecast what might happen based on possible actions, and gauge how specific actions might affect such variables as the revenue-per-customer and the churn rate. Strategies often specify how to adjust the marketing mix; firms can use tools such as Marketing Mix Modeling to help them decide how to allocate scarce resources for different media, as well as how to allocate funds across a portfolio of brands. In addition, firms can conduct analyses of performance, customer analysis, competitor analysis, and target market analysis. A key aspect of marketing strategy is often to keep marketing consistent with a company's overarching mission statement. Marketing strategy should not be confused with a marketing objective or mission. For example, a goal may be to become the market leader, perhaps in a specific niche; a mission may be something along the lines of "to serve customers with honor and dignity"; in contrast, a marketing strategy describes how a firm will achieve the stated goal in a way which is consistent with the mission, perhaps by detailed plans for how it might build a referral network, for example. Strategy varies by type of market. A well-established firm in a mature market will likely have a different strategy than a start-up. Plans usually involve monitoring, to assess progress, and prepare for contingencies if problems arise.
