What does FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT mean? FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT meaning - FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT definition - FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A foreign direct investment is an investment in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country. It is thus distinguished from foreign portfolio investment by a notion of direct control. The origin of the investment does not impact the definition as an FDI: the investment may be made either "inorganically" by buying a company in the target country or "organically" by expanding operations of an existing business in that country. Broadly, foreign direct investment includes "mergers and acquisitions, building new facilities, reinvesting profits earned from overseas operations and intra company loans". In a narrow sense, foreign direct investment refers just to building new facility, a lasting management interest (10 percent or more of voting stock) in an enterprise operating in an economy other than that of the investor. FDI is the sum of equity capital, other long-term capital, and short-term capital as shown the balance of payments. FDI usually involves participation in management, joint-venture, transfer of technology and expertise. Stock of FDI is the net (i.e., outward FDI minus inward FDI) cumulative FDI for any given period. Direct investment excludes investment through purchase of shares. FDI is one example of international factor movements. A foreign direct investment (FDI) is a controlling ownership in a business enterprise in one country by an entity based in another country. Foreign direct investment is distinguished from foreign portfolio investment, a passive investment in the securities of another country such as public stocks and bonds, by the element of "control". According to the Financial Times, "Standard definitions of control use the internationally agreed 10 percent threshold of voting shares, but this is a grey area as often a smaller block of shares will give control in widely held companies. Moreover, control of technology, management, even crucial inputs can confer de facto control." According to Grazia Ietto-Gillies (2012), prior to Stephen Hymer’s theory regarding direct investment in the 1960s, the reasons behind Foreign Direct Investment and Multinational Corporations were explained by neoclassical economics based on macro economic principles. These theories were based on the classical theory of trade in which the motive behind trade was a result of the difference in the costs of production of goods between two countries, focusing on the low cost of production as a motive for a firm’s foreign activity. For example, Joe S. Bain only explained the internationalization challenge through three main principles: absolute cost advantages, product differentiation advantages and economies of scale. Furthermore, the neoclassical theories were created under the assumption of the existence of perfect competition. Intrigued by the motivations behind large foreign investments made by corporations from the United States of America, Hymer developed a framework that went beyond the existing theories, explaining why this phenomenon occurred, since he considered that the previously mentioned theories could not explain foreign investment and its motivations. Facing the challenges of his predecessors, Hymer focused his theory on filling the gaps regarding international investment. The theory proposed by the author approaches international investment from a different and more firm-specific point of view. As opposed to traditional macroeconomics-based theories of investment, Hymer states that there is a difference between mere capital investment, otherwise known as portfolio investment, and direct investment. The difference between the two, which will become the cornerstone of his whole theoretical framework, is the issue of control, meaning that with direct investment firms are able to obtain a greater level of control than with portfolio investment. Furthermore, Hymer proceeds to criticize the neoclassical theories, stating that the theory of capital movements cannot explain international production. Moreover, he clarifies that FDI is not necessarily a movement of funds from a home country to a host country, and that it is concentrated on particular industries within many countries.

http://www.profitableinvestingtips.com/investing-tips/foreign-direct-investment Foreign Direct Investment By www.ProfitableInvestingTips.com Follow the money is age old advice for knowing why something is happening. In this case we would like to follow the money that goes into foreign direct investment. Foreign direct investment is done by folks with lots of money and the intention to stay on course and make a profit. If you are looking for offshore investment ideas, take a look at where foreign direct investment goes year after year after year. There have been changes afoot regarding where foreign direct investment is going. A very useful reference in this regard is the just published United Nations study, World Investment Report 2013. We have used 2007 and 2012 as bookend comparison years as 2007 was just before the onset of the worst recession in three quarters of a century and 2012 is the most recent year reported. Of note is that direct foreign investment has fallen in the large majority of nations but there are exceptions that should help guide investors with their fundamental analysis of where to put their money in the years ahead. First take a look at the data and then read about foreign direct investment. Foreign Direct Investment Comparison of 2007 and 2012 In Billions of USD Taken from the United Nations World Investment Report 2013 Nation 2007 2012 European Union 859 323 UK 200 71 France 96 37 Germany 80 67 North America, incl. Mexico363 408 Canada 117 54 USA 216 329 Mexico 31 26 Japan 23 123 China 84 84 China, Hong Kong 62 83 South Korea 9 33 India 25 9 South Africa 6 4 Russian Federation 57 51 Brazil 35 -3 The largest gain in foreign direct investment on our chart is in the USA followed closely by Japan (113 billion to 100 billion). As a percentage increase Japan out performs everyone with an increase of more than 400%. Other significant performers are South Korea with a more than 200% increase in foreign direct investment and Hong Kong with a twenty-five percent increase. It is significant that the BRICS nations which were thought to be ready to move up economically lost as a group. China stayed put at $84 Billion. Russia fell from $57 Billion to $52 Billion and South Africa fell from $6 Billion to $4 Billion. Brazil fell off the charts going from $35 Billion in direct foreign investment to a negative $3 Billion because investors are taking money out of the country! Direct Foreign Investment: What Is It and Why Do It? In general, foreign direct investment includes mergers and acquisitions, the building of new facilities, reinvestment of profits earned overseas and cross border loans within offshore operations. Basically companies invest offshore because they expect to make a profit over the long term. Because of the long timeline needed to research new projects and develop them, this sort of investment is typically well thought out. Reasons to invest offshore aside from expected profits include low taxes, tax holidays of the twenty-five year or longer variety, preferential tariffs, investment loan subsidies, free land or land subsidies, R&D support, proximity to profitable markets and more. Can You Follow the Money and Make a Profit? There are some useful lessons to be learned from reading the results of the World Investment Report 2013. A lot of the hype about Brazil and the rest of the BRICS nations was largely that, just hype. Brazil is attached at the hip to China and when events in China trigger the next big stock market crash Brazil will suffer. Money is going where there is economic, social and political stability, high end technology, democracy instead of dictatorship and nations that are interested in getting foreign investment instead of driving it away. Hong Kong is preferred over China because of the democratic residual from British colonial days. Japan is in an economic resurgence and Korea is largely keeping pace. The USA remains the most economically open economy and thus benefits the most from direct foreign investment during troubled times. When you decide where to put your money look for growing economies and economic sectors, tax advantages to your investment in a given economy and political stability so that the next government does not decide to confiscate your investment. http://youtu.be/pmqXFPWG87s

International Investment: Stock Market Analysis - Investors Conference - Part 2 (1988)

02:04:18
Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a direct investment into production or business in a country by an individual or company of another country, either by buying a company in the target country or by expanding operations of an existing business in that country. Foreign direct investment is in contrast to portfolio investment which is a passive investment in the securities of another country such as stocks and bonds. Broadly, foreign direct investment includes "mergers and acquisitions, building new facilities, reinvesting profits earned from overseas operations and intra company loans".[1] In a narrow sense, foreign direct investment refers just to building new facilities. The numerical FDI figures based on varied definitions are not easily comparable. As a part of the national accounts of a country, and in regard to the GDP equation Y=C+I+G+(X-M)[Consumption + gross Investment + Government spending +(eXports - iMports], where I is domestic investment plus foreign investment, FDI is defined as the net inflows of investment (inflow minus outflow) to acquire a lasting management interest (10 percent or more of voting stock) in an enterprise operating in an economy other than that of the investor.[2] FDI is the sum of equity capital, other long-term capital, and short-term capital as shown the balance of payments. FDI usually involves participation in management, joint-venture, transfer of technology and expertise. There are two types of FDI: inward and outward, resulting in a net FDI inflow (positive or negative) and "stock of foreign direct investment", which is the cumulative number for a given period. Direct investment excludes investment through purchase of shares.[3] FDI is one example of international factor movements Horizontal FDI arises when a firm duplicates its home country-based activities at the same value chain stage in a host country through FDI.[4] Platform FDI Foreign direct investment from a source country into a destination country for the purpose of exporting to a third country. Vertical FDI takes place when a firm through FDI moves upstream or downstream in different value chains i.e., when firms perform value-adding activities stage by stage in a vertical fashion in a host country.[4] Horizontal FDI decreases international trade as the product of them is usually aimed at host country; the two other types generally act as a stimulus for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_investment

Portfolio investments are held directly by an investor or managed by financial professionals. In economics, foreign portfolio investment is the entry of funds into a country where foreigners deposit money in a country's bank or make purchases in the country’s stock and bond markets, sometimes for speculation. Portfolio investments typically involve transactions in securities that are highly liquid, i.e. they can be bought and sold very quickly. A portfolio investment is an investment made by an investor who is not involved in the management of a company. This is in contrast to direct investment, which allows an investor to exercise a certain degree of managerial control over a company. Equity investments where the owner holds less than 10% of a company's shares are classified as portfolio investment. These transactions are also referred to as "portfolio flows" and are recorded in the financial account of a country's balance of payments. According to the Institute of International Finance, portfolio flows arise through the transfer of ownership of securities from one country to another. Foreign portfolio investment is positively influenced by high rates of return and reduction of risk through geographic diversification. The return on foreign portfolio investment is normally in the form of interest payments or non-voting dividends.

Foreign direct investment in Saudi Arabia: Riyadh Chamber of Commerce

02:47
Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry discusses Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). While foreign direct investment weakened to Saudi Arabia in 2013, the Kingdom remains the most attractive destination for foreign investment in the Arab world according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and "World Investment Report 2013." The FDI inflows slowed down by 25% in 2012 to USD 12.2 billion. Despite the slowdown Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry sees improved environment for the FDI. "Regarding FDI as well as local investment, had the economy been doing well and we have been doing fine, this will be more attractive for both local Saudi and international businesses; therefore, the future of the FDI in Saudi Arabia is promising. I also believe that SAGIA (Saudi Arabia's General Investment Authority) is doing its best in attracting foreign investments into the Kingdom. At the same time, the government injected huge amounts of funds into the market, which have created a good environment not only for local Saudi investors but also for non-Saudis who are interested in investing in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, I imagine the future is bright in this connection as the Saudi government encourages FDI and has already established SAGIA to look after investments, both internally and externally. I suppose foreign investment is a good indication of how smartly the government is tackling this issue, especially foreign investments, and attracting such assets into the country," said Dr. Mohammed H. Al Kathiri, Secretary-General of RCCI. "Six months ago, the Chamber has formed a committee and termed it the International Cooperation Committee. This committee has comprised several foreign investor CEOs from major companies investing in Saudi Arabia. It watches over obstacles facing those investors who invest in Saudi Arabia and contacts government agencies to facilitate procedures and remove such obstacles. This is essentially a direct support to foreign investors, knowing that all activities of the Chamber are streamlined to facilitate procedural processes and help the private sector in general, including foreign investors as well, to work in a friendly environment," he added. Foreign Direct Investment in China

04:18
http://www.profitableinvestingtips.com/investing-tips/foreign-direct-investment-in-china Foreign Direct Investment in China By www.ProfitableInvestingTips.com Investors are looking outside of China for places to do business and foreign direct investment in China is falling off. According to the online Wall Street Journal China attracted less foreign direct investment in May compared with a year ago, according to new figures, amid concerns among some foreign investors about less-favorable operating conditions in the world's second-largest economy. The issues commonly cited as foreign direct investment in China which decline are those which we have noted previously. China has a less than transparent economy. The rule of law is arbitrary to say the least as the old Communist Party holds on to power. As China's work force ages the price of labor is going up. And the long expected Chinese real estate bubble may still collapse leading to long term economic stagnation similar to what happened with Japan. Meanwhile, other nations are seeing more investment as foreign direct investment in Chile has nearly doubled in early 2014 versus the year before. According to Forbes online Foreign direct investment in Chile rose 82% in January to April versus the same period of 2013, according to the Chilean central bank. How Can You Short China? If you believe that a stock is going down you can short it. How can you short China? You can certainly invest elsewhere but is there a way that you can profit if the Chinese economy tapers off as investment goes elsewhere? You can buy and sell Chinese stocks on American stock exchanges using American Depository Receipts. Level I ADRs are subject to the same rules as US stocks in terms of reporting and transparency requirements. If you believe that one of these stocks may fall substantially in price you might consider buying put options on that stock, wait for the hammer to fall and then cash out. Fundamental Analysis of Business Investment Opportunities How to evaluate a country for investment is to start with reliable sources of information such as the World Bank and by all means visit the country in question. The World Bank is a repository of excellent information regarding investing offshore. Whether you are contemplating foreign direct investment or buying stocks via ADRs, the World Bank has very useful information to help evaluate a country for investment. A useful page of results from the World Bank business project is the ease of doing business index page which ranks nations from 1 to 189 for a composite of factors that make doing business easy or difficult. Ease of doing business ranks economies from 1 to 189, with first place being the best. A high ranking (a low numerical rank) means that the regulatory environment is conducive to business operation. The index averages the country's percentile rankings on 10 topics covered in the World Bank's Doing Business. The ranking on each topic is the simple average of the percentile rankings on its component indicators. The Likely Case Foreign direct investment in China has fallen off this month and may fall off more. But, the Chinese economy is not going to collapse. A more likely scenario is that the government will make changes sufficient to stay in power, increase investment at home and do things to decrease their reliance on exports. Foreign direct investment in China in the future will likely have more to do with selling to the Chinese than making things in China to sell to the world. http://youtu.be/51YzlDqZOaA

An Introduction To The Indian Stock Market !

01:50
Most trading in the Indian stock market occurs through its two exchanges – the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. The BSE has been in existence since 1875, but the NSE was founded in 1992 and started trading in 1994. Both follow the same rules and mechanisms, and both list most of India’s major firms. Trading takes place between 9:15 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, Indian Standard time. Trades are settled two business days after they’re made. Trading at the exchanges takes place through an open electronic limit order book in which the computer matches orders. The process is order-driven, meaning the best limit orders are automatically matched with market orders, so buyers and sellers remain anonymous. All orders take place through brokers. Sensex and the S&P CNX Nifty are India’s two main market indexes. Sensex, the oldest for equities, includes 30 firms listed on the BSE that represent about 45% of the index’s free float market capitalization. The Nifty has 50 shares listed on the NSE, representing about 62% of its free-float market capitalization. The Securities & Exchange Board of India regulates the country’s stock market. India started allowing outside investments in the 1990s. Foreign investments are either foreign direct investments or foreign portfolio investments. FDIs allow investors to participate in the company’s day-to-day operations; FPIs do not. India’s government determines FDI limits, and has set different ceilings over the years. Foreign investors must register as a foreign institutional investor or as a sub-account for one of the FIIs. They can invest directly into any stock listed on an exchange. FDI and FII - Foreign Direct Investment versus Foreign Institutional Investment

13:48
Friends, When a foreign individual or institution do invest in our physical properties, like, electricity, drinking water, road, factory etc then this type of investment will be known as FDI. When a foreign individual or institution do invest in share market then this type of investment will called FII IBM India is a wholly owned subsidiary of IBM, and is a good example of FDI Stability rate of FDI is better than FII. In FII, the companies only need to get registered in the stock exchange to make investments. But FDI is quite different from it as they invest in a foreign nation FDI investment is more stable in compare to FII. A foreign investor can take back their money(or any kind of investment) any time

What is an Foreign Direct Investment?

01:20
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Foreign Direct Investment” Foreign direct investment simply referred to as FDI is an investment in a business by an investor from another country for which the foreign investor has control over the company purchased. The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development defines control as owning 10% or more of the business. Businesses that make foreign direct investments are often called multinational corporations or multinational enterprises. A MNE may make a direct investment by creating a new foreign enterprise, which is called a greenfield investment, or by the acquisition of a foreign firm, either called an acquisition or brownfield investment. In the context of foreign direct investment, advantages and disadvantages are often a matter of perspective. An FDI may provide some great advantages for the MNE but not for the foreign country where the investment is made. On the other hand, sometimes the deal can work out better for the foreign country depending upon how the investment pans out. Ideally, there should be numerous advantages for both the MNE and the foreign country, which is often a developing country. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy - ITA

07:10
We live in a global world, which means businesses in India either needs fund from outside of India or a NRI, foreigner or a Foreign based company or VC needs to invest or start a company locally in India? In this episode of eLagaan Whiteboard Friday, the eLagaan (http://elagaan.com ) team provides an overview of FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) and how can related to not just big companies like Walmart but also to SME, startups & entrepreneurs . FDI is a terminology defined by RBI (Reserve Bank Of India) and is created to monitor any inflow of money from foreign countries. All funds under FDI needs to be reported to the RBI and approved based on the classification they fall under. This is also required during repatriation of money back to the country and person/company of origin. So if you are an Indian startup looking for venture capital or a partner outside of India, you need to worry about FDI.

Stock Market Career - Earn 1 Crore in a Year Without Any Investment [HINDI]

10:30
Stock Market Career is very lucrative as it is considered to be one of the easiest ways to make money. Unfortunately, it is not correct. Here, Stock Market Career does not mean trading. To be very honest with you, trading cannot be a career. The best career in the stock market is to provide the paid services and especially running the mentee or trader programs. It can be called a business also because it takes advantage of the greed and fear of the investors and traders in the stock market. One of the critical success factors for any business is to provide products and service that take care of the greed and fear of the consumers. These type of businesses can command a premium. Similarly, if you are running a mentee or trader program then the investor is willing to pay a heavy premium. A trader or mentee program of 2 days can command fees of up to 50,000. A career to provide mentorship can help you earn more than a crore every year provided you are a known name in this field. It is more than or equivalent to the salary of a CEO of a mid-size company. Therefore, an indirect stock market career can help you generate more income than direct ones like trading, franchisee or broker. If you liked this video, You can "Subscribe" to my YouTube Channel. Foreign Direct Investment: Engine for Job Growth

05:01
"Today is the moment for Europeans to invest in the Philippines. The country is making good progress and is putting itself more on the map of European companies. Let's aim for a doubling of EU FDI in the next five years," said Ambassador Guy Ledoux of the European Union (EU) Delegation at a forum entitled Foreign Direct Investments (FDI): Engine for Job Growth on 13 May 2014 held at The Mind Museum, Bonifacio Global City. Foreign Direct Investments - Guy LedouxThe EU is currently the largest foreign investor in the Philippines with an estimated stock of Euro 7.6 billion. Around 600 European companies are now in the country, employing an estimated 400,000 Filipinos. "There is much more out there. The EU contribution to the Philippines is still marginal compared to what other ASEAN countries are receiving. There are a number of measures that the Philippines could implement that could create a win-win environment for both Philippines and the EU," added Ledoux. Ledoux mentioned that liberalizing areas such as professional and financial services, as well as reducing ownership limitations in key industries such as retail, manpower recruitment, government procurement, insurance and finance will facilitate the new investments. Ledoux concluded that the ongoing review to revise the Foreign Investment Negative List and the Investment Act are good indicators that the Philippines is opening up its market.
