There are many, but let’s talk about four: • Educations and advancement of your knowledge • Camaraderie • Job hunting • Grow customers, partnerships, etc. B. Build your relationship map by doing your research. C. Identify 60 to 100 people you can connect with who can help you meet your goals. D. Prepare standard messages you can modify. E. “E” is for execute. Hi! It's time for Spotlight on Business! I'm Kim Taylor and this week we are taking a look at networking for personal and professional development. Let's start by understanding what we mean when we say "networking." The term is used all the time in business, and we are told constantly how important networking is in order to be successful in business. As with anything, definitions evolve over time as people gain a better understanding of what something is and how to make proper use of it. Networking is no different. Years ago, when the "networking" buzz hit, people felt a sense of urgency to "increase their network", meaning add as many names as possible to their contact database. This resulted in what felt like, and often was, a series of disingenuous interactions that resulted in little more than a pocket full of nameless, faceless business cards at the conclusion of a networking event. For many people, this remains their primary understanding of networking and so they either continue in that same vein, or, not finding that very appealing, they avoid it altogether. Either way, with that as your working definition there is no real value being created or exchanged. I'd like to offer a different definition of networking. In my workshop, Networking Naturally, I start by helping clients to see that networking is actually an opportunity for "a momentary exchange of value." If you abandon the idea of trying to "meet everyone in the room" and instead focus on how you can potentially exchange value with one or two people you meet at an event, a world of new possibilities opens immediately. Think of networking not as a numbers game, but a quality game. Seek to build momentary, and, over time, long-term relationships with others. The whole purpose of "networking" is to help others and, perhaps, be helped by others. In order for this to happen, people need to get to know one another, share ideas and information, and uncover, through conversation, areas to exchange value. I would argue having one or two good conversations, where you learn about the other person and they learn something about you, is infinitely more valuable than having a dozen strangers' business cards in your pocket. If you take the time to find out what the other person is seeking, you may uncover an opportunity to assist -- be it in providing some advice, pointing them to a source of information, or providing them with a needed contact. In that moment, when you offer to assist another, a relationship is created and, inherently, value is exchanged. That is the foundation of "successful" networking. Founder and Chairman of BNI, Business Networking International, Ivan Misner stated in a recent Entrepreneur article that to be successful in networking, people must be selective and seek out quality relationships, continuously add to their network, seek engagement with their network, and share stories so they can help their network. In other words, networks need to be cultivated, not abandoned, in order to be fruitful. Everyone would love to go full-time in Network Marketing, everyone would love to enjoy the financial and personal freedom that network marketing provides, but how does one do that? And what is the fastest way to success? In this week’s 20-minute show, Eric Worre, takes us behind closed doors and gives the key to success in Network Marketing. The fastest way to success is to improve the people that you’re spending time with. By that, Eric explains, hang around and associate with people who are a positive influence and can help you go where you want to go in life. To quote Jim Rohn, “You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” You will generally think how they think, go where they go, do what they do, your interests are gonna be similar, and your ambitions are gonna be similar. But if you are hanging around lazy, unmotivated, negative people, they will drag you down with them. So find people who are a positive influence on you and will help you grow your business. As Eric further explains, if you don’t know how to recruit very well, or you’re insecure in recruiting, the fastest way to become a good recruiter, is to find people who are great recruiters, and listen to those people. Same applies in other areas, such as, if you’re not good at doing presentations, find a way to develop relationships and friendships with people who are doing great presentations. This works in all categories of building your network marketing business. In the video Eric tells us of being a very young man and he wanted to learn and grow, so he absorbed every motivational, business building audiocassette he could get his hands on. He listened to all the greats. He even drove hours around the country, sleeping in his car, just so he could shadow people that he admired in the Network Marketing business, just to listen when they spoke. He did everything he could, not only did he listen, shadow and absorb every word, but by working on his inner mental game, he found a way to bring value to a conversation with people much more successful than him, thereby earning his way into their “group”. Eric explains that this type of transformation begins in your mind, but you also have to limit your association to negative people, or negative situations. But mostly you need to focus on expanding your association with positive influences and surround yourself with greatness, and the little negative things will slowly fade away... Some of Eric’s early mentors he never met, but they mentored him through video, audio, and books, and you can build associations just like that also. In fact it wasn’t a something, but a someone. This person, a self professed introvert, was one of the best networked people I know, with connections from Holly wood to the venture capital world, to personal development world. Once I found this out about him, I began to ask him how that all came about and that’s what I want to share with you today. His name by the way is Evan Carmichael, he’s a YouTuber who makes inspiring content for entrepreneurs. I’ll put a link to his channel in the description. So here’s what I saw from him. First off, redefine what constitutes a networking event. Most things with “networking” in the title are a complete waste of time. It attracts people who are looking to develop a network instead of a relationship. And it’s especially bad if you’re an introvert, since you’ll be competing with a bunch of other people hungry to share their story and what they are working on.
