Availability and access to water in a context of climate change

02:11
Availability and access to water in a context of climate change This 13/04/2017 to French Institute of cotonou ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ National Institute of water; Research Institute for development (IRD); National Partnership of the water of Benin - ncb; Yad Africa; uac abomey calavi; African organization of youth for the United States of Africa; YSA YSA Water Shortages are a formidable threat to economic growth and stability in the world, a problem that climate change comes worse. The different communications from the platform show that if the country do not take steps to better manage water resources, some regions heavily populated could know long periods of negative economic growth. The countries may, however, adopt from now on policies that help them to exploit the water resources in a sustainable way over the next few years. The improvement of the decisions made on the action to conduct could help to neutralize the harmful effects of climate change on water. Some regions have opportunities to improve their rate of growth in a proportion of up to 6 %, thanks to a better use of water resources. We have already seen several socio-economic impact of climate change on water: * uncertainties related to the difficulties of measure of impact; * the most affected by the impacts of climate change will be the most vulnerable; * impact on access to the water resources ; * increase in natural disasters related to water; * impact on agriculture and food security; * impact on health and finally on the ecosystems. More ambitious policies are needed in the extremely arid regions of the world in order to avoid an inefficient use of the water. The report indicates that policies and more robust reforms are needed to cope with the stress of growing climate source. He present policies and investment categories of nature to help countries to acquire economies in the shelter of water insecurity and resilient in the face of climate change. Better planning of the allowance of water resources, the adoption of incentives to increase the water efficiency and investment in infrastructure represent so many steps to take to ensure a more secure supply and a greater availability of water. . The objective of this platform is to promote the action to take in order to accelerate the implementation of the sixth goal of sustainable development: to ensure universal access to water and sanitation and ensure a sustainable management of resources Water. In conclusion, the negative effects of climate change challenge progress in development in all areas: access to water, food security, health etc. In General the impacts of climate change on human societies depend on the ability of resilience of these and therefore of their degree of vulnerability, the socio-economic factors are the main factors explaining the difference of impact of climate change on the companies . Resource Capacity Planner - Excel Template - Team Capacity (Hours) Planning

16:41
In this article, we will be taking up monthly capacity planning for a team. We will be using the Resource Capacity Planner Excel Template in this exercise. (Link: https://indzara.com/product/resource-capacity-planner-excel-template/) SCENARIO: We are responsible for planning our team’s capacity every month. We need to have a realistic view of how much work can be done by our team next month, taking into account the availability of each of our team members during the month. This will allow us to commit to our leadership on deliverables’ scope and if needed ask for more resource or to reduce the deliverables. Resource Capacity Planner Excel template is helpful in understanding the available resource capacity, comparing with demand and identifying surplus/deficit capacity by skill groups. The template takes the resource availability, holidays, weekends, overtime and vacation data to calculate capacity. Then, based on your input demand data, it can calculate the surplus/deficit capacity. In addition, you can generate an employee availability report. It can be used in different environments. For example, a manager leading a team can use this to plan capacity of his team every month. A project manager who is working on a multi-month long project can plan the resource capacity for the entire duration. This can also be used outside corporate environments wherever you want to compare demand vs capacity. Application pools in IIS Part 82

What are application pools in IIS 2. Creating application pools in internet information services(IIS) 3. Application pool identities 4. Associating an ASP.NET Web Application with an Application Pool What are application pools in IIS An Application Pool can contain one or more web applications. In IIS it is possible to create one or more application pools. Applications in different application pools, runs in its own worker process(w3wp.exe). Errors in one application pool will not affect the applications running in other application pools. For example, if an application pool is recycled, only the applications in that pool are affected(may loose state information if stored inside worker process), and applications in other application pools are unaffected. Deploying applications to different application pools enables us to achieve the degree of application isolation that we need, in terms of availability and security. For example, applications that require high security can be present in one application pool, and the other applications can be in a different application pool. Another example, hosting providers can place competing business applications in different application pools, so that they do not accidentally access the data belonging to their competitor. Creating application pools in internet information services(IIS) 1. Click on start 2. Type "RUN" and press "ENTER" 3. In the "RUN" window, type "INETMGR" 4. Click "OK" 5. In the IIS Manager window, expand the root node and right click on "Application Pools" and select "Add Application Pool" 6. Provide the "Name" for Application pool and click OK. Application pool identities Asp.net applications execute inside asp.net worker process called w3wp.exe. The applications are executed by the worker process, using a windows identity. The windows identity that is used, is dependent on the application pool identity. The application pool identity can be any of the following built in aaccounts 1. LocalService 2. LocalSystem 3. NetworkService 4. ApplicationPoolIdentity In addition to these built-in accounts, we can also use a custom account, by specifying the username and password. By default, when a new application pool is created, it uses ApplicationPoolIdentity. To change the application pool identity 1. Right click on the application pool and select "Advanced Settings" 2. In the "Advanced Settings", click the elipses button next to "Identity" under "Process Model" section 3. From the "Application Pool Idenity" window, select one of the built-in accounts or enter the user and password, if you choos to use a custom account. 4. Finally click "OK" Local System : Completely trusted account and has very high privileges and can also access network resources. Network Service : Restricted or limited service account that is generally used to run, standard least-privileged services. This account has less privileges than Local System account. This account can access network resources. Local Service : Restricted or limited service account that is very similar to Network Service and meant to run standard least-privileged services. This account cannot access network resources. ApplicationPoolIdentity: When a new Application Pool is created, IIS creates a virtual account with the name of the new Application Pool and run the Application Pool's worker processes under this account. This is also a least privileged account. Running an application using a low-privileged account is a good security practice, because, if there is a bug, that cannot be used by a malicious user to hack into your application or your system. Groundwater, the Hidden Resource

03:41
Water is essential to human, plant, and animal survival. From huge cities to tiny villages, about 50% of the world’s population depends on groundwater every day. So what’s the problem? Well, while groundwater is the most abundant source of fresh water on earth, it remains a hidden resource. We often know where to locate it, but what really keeps it “hidden” is the limited amount of data on its availability, quantity and quality. In other words: we often have insufficient real insight in the water below. Now it’s time to uncover the mysteries behind the great resource of groundwater! Sustainable safeguarding of water resources

03:56
A project of the National Research Programme "Sustainable water management" (NRP 61). Prof. Dr. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey presents the research work carried out in the scope of the project: Access to water of good quality and in sufficient quantity is essential to human beings. However, land use and climate changes challenge this water availability. Political and administrative decision-makers depend on a scientific basis on which to build, in good time, measures for the safeguarding of water resources. Water is used for drinking, for the irrigation of fields and for the production of energy; we relax by the water and also have to protect ourselves against floods. However, human activity and climate change affect the ecosystems, thus interfering with their functions. When less water is available, many branches of industry are endangered. Additional costs arise when certain branches can no longer function as desired. It is therefore necessary to develop measures which safeguard the availability of good quality water in sufficient quantity. The project takes into account the entire water resource supply chain, from the supply in the catchment area all the way to the use in the valley, based on the example of the Rhône in the Upper Valais. Basic national and international political conditions and their influence on water management will be taken into account, as will the changes associated with the climate. A model will be developed that combines the hydrological, ecological and economic aspects of water resource development and portrays these in various scenarios. The effects of climate change and land use on water resources will be depicted in maps. In this way, it will be demonstrated that certain areas react more sensitively to climate change and socio-economic development than others, and suitable adaptation strategies can be formulated for the local stakeholders. Tools will be developed that will help the decision-makers to develop regional measures, thus ensuring that high quality water is available in sufficient quantities. These measures can for example include exploitation modifications and financial incentive systems. The regional players will above all have to adapt to climate change. When it comes to modifications in land use, they will possibly be able to weaken negative trends. Informations: http://www.nfp61.ch

How to Find Resources at UA Libraries

06:06
This video covers how to use the research tools on the University of Alabama Libraries' website to find the resources you need. The search functions covered are Scout, The Databases Index, E-Resources, the Libraries' Catalog, and ACUMEN Digital Archives. UA Libraries: http://www.lib.ua.edu Ask-A-Librarian: http://www.ask.lib.ua.edu VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: SCOUT: Our primary search tool is SCOUT, which searches the Libraries Catalog, our databases, the digital archive, all in one search. Scout looks for keywords by default, but its Advanced Search mode can be adjusted with the drop-down menus to search by title, author, or other parameters. Use the AND, OR, NOT menu to narrow or broaden your terms. You can refine results in the sidebar. For example, I might want only peer-reviewed articles published since 2016. I’ll enter a simple keyword search to illustrate how the results display and link to the resources. The first is a print book currently on the shelf in the Education library. The second is an article from an academic journal with a linked pdf, which requires a few clicks to get to it. Next is a direct download link for a full-text pdf. Last you can see “Check for Full Text,” this means that we don’t have access to a digital copy, but it may be available through print holdings or interlibrary loan. As the all-in-one research tool for UA Libraries, Scout is a great place to begin exploring a topic and discovering what articles and books are available. For more in-depth research, however, you may need to explore specific databases. DATABASES: Databases are large collections of specialized content, such as full-text academic journals, news, statistical data, or streaming video collections. UA Libraries provides access to hundreds of databases, all of which can be accessed through our Databases link on the home page. You can use the drop-down menus to find databases by subject or type. You can also find a database by name using the A-Z index or search bar. The subject, scope, and range of a database are described below each link. Each link will take you to that database’s landing page, where you can browse or search for specific resources. Databases are organized and constructed in a variety of ways. Some, like Academic Search Premier, look a lot like Scout. Others, like ProQuest Historical Newspapers, have different options and search functions designed specifically for the content they contain. In most databases, you can perform advanced searches with menus and limiters to find the best results. Many databases also provide specific tutorials and FAQs for advanced searching. Each database has unique content and resources, so advanced research often requires searching in multiple databases. E-RESOURCES: The E-Resources link lets you browse our electronic journal and book holdings alphabetically or by subject area. You can also search by journal title, making this the fastest way to find complete issues of specific scholarly journals; just search for the title, follow the links, and then find the volume you want. Most are organized by year. You can also browse by subject area, and then limit your results by resource type. Clicking a title in the results listing will allow you to directly access the content. LIBRARIES' CATALOG: The Libraries' Catalog search tool is different than Scout, and is sometimes more convenient to use if you know the author, title, or subject of a book you’re looking for. The catalog searches UA’s permanent collection of books, government docs, periodicals, multimedia items, rare books, primary documents, and microfilm. You can also search for specific journals by title to check availability of print and electronic volumes. When you click on a result, you’ll see the item’s information, location, and availability. The actions menu on the right of the item record page allows you to save, send, or export records, and you can also request to hold a book, recall a book that is currently checked out, or request items from the Annex. ACUMEN DIGITAL ARCHIVES: Through UA’s homegrown digital archive, ACUMEN, you can access or locate items from our special collections libraries such as dissertations, manuscripts, photographs, historical audio, and rare books. ACUMEN is searched by keyword and results can be filtered by resource type. For detailed information on using UA’s special collections with ACUMEN, click the Guidance tab at the top of the ACUMEN front page. If you need help finding resources or have questions about using UA Libraries, contact us at 205-348-6047 or go to ask.lib.ua.edu to Ask-A-Librarian."

Maximizing P2P File Access Availability in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks though Replication

Maximizing P2P File Access Availability in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks though Replication for Efficient File Sharing To get this project in ONLINE or through TRAINING Sessions, Contact:JP INFOTECH, Old No.31, New No.86, 1st Floor, 1st Avenue, Ashok Pillar, Chennai -83. Mobile: (0) 9952649690 , Email: [email protected], web: www.jpinfotech.org Blog: www.jpinfotech.blogspot.com ABSTRACT: File sharing applications in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have attracted more and more attention in recent years. The efficiency of file querying suffers from the distinctive properties of such networks including node mobility and limited communication range and resource. An intuitive method to alleviate this problem is to create file replicas in the network. However, despite the efforts on file replication, no research has focused on the global optimal replica creation with minimum average querying delay. Specifically, current file replication protocols in mobile ad hoc networks have two shortcomings. First, they lack a rule to allocate limited resources to different files in order to minimize the average querying delay. Second, they simply consider storage as available resources for replicas, but neglect the fact that the file holders’ frequency of meeting other nodes also plays an important role in determining file availability. Actually, a node that has a higher meeting frequency with others provides higher availability to its files. This becomes even more evident in sparsely distributed MANETs, in which nodes meet disruptively. In this paper, we introduce a new concept of resource for file replication, which considers both node storage and meeting frequency. We theoretically study the influence of resource allocation on the average querying delay and derive a resource allocation rule to minimize the average querying delay. We further propose a distributed file replication protocol to realize the proposed rule. Extensive trace-driven experiments with synthesized traces and real traces show that our protocol can achieve shorter average querying delay at a lower cost than current replication protocols.

Access to energy resources will influence and shape the future of human society as we go forward. The cost and availability of energy significantly impacts our quality of life. While most people in industrialized countries have easy access to energy more than two billion people are still relying on solid fuels like wood for cooking and heating. There are also environmental issues to be considered in our efforts for exploration and utilization of new sources of energy. Microwave remote sensing techniques have been very successful for measuring and monitoring many environmentally important terrestrial parameters such as soil moisture, biomass, ocean wind and salinity, etc. However, until recently such techniques have not been exploited for subsurface sensing. In this talk a number of recently developed radar remote sensing techniques will be presented to demonstrate the potential of microwave remote sensing techniques in exploration of fossil fuel resources. A dual frequency synthetic aperture technique will be presented that allows for mapping the sand layer thickness over bedrock to assist with successful seismic tests. Also, a borehole subsurface synthetic aperture imaging concept is presented that facilitates mapping the extent of the subsurface fracking region in shell rock. Monitoring the extent of fracking region is of great importance for optimal utilization of oil/gas wells and to ensure the fracking region is far away from the aquafers. Young people with cancer: online information and support needs - Video Abstract [ID 173115]

02:51
Video abstract of an original research “Online information and support needs of young people with cancer: a participatory action research study” published in the open access journal Adolescent Health, Medicine and Therapeutics by authors Lea, Matins, Morgan et al. Purpose: The Internet is a fully integrated part of young people’s life and it is pivotal that online resources are developed to maximize the potential of the Internet to support those living with and beyond cancer. We sought to understand how young people with a cancer diagnosis use the Internet and to what extent information and support needs are met by existing online resources. Patients and methods: This was a participatory action research study involving 21 young people participating in workshops and individual interviews. Participants aged 13–24 years were diagnosed with a range of cancers. Young people were on treatment or had completed treatment; some had experienced relapse. Workshops consisted of participatory methods including focus group discussions, interactive activities, and individual thought, encompassing online resources used; when, how and what they were searching for, whether resources were helpful and how they could be improved. Results: Young people reported using communication platforms, entertainment sites, social media, medical websites, charity websites, and search engines to find information and support. Different online use and needs were described throughout their cancer timeline and online use was generally driven by negative emotions. Seven factors influenced access and engagement: 1) where young people were on their cancer timeline; 2) external influencing factors, such as family and environments; 3) emotional drivers; 4) what young people search for online; 5) resources, websites, and digital platforms used by young people; 6) availability, accessibility, and assessment of online information and resources; 7) emotional responses to using online resources. Conclusion: The way young people access and engage with online resources is complex with multiple influencing factors including powerful emotional drivers and responses to Internet searching. There is a need to develop resources that support the holistic needs of young people and this should be done in collaboration with young people.
