Definite & Indefinite Articles in Spanish

05:24
Sometimes using terms when you're learning a language can hurt more than it helps. This is possibly one of those times. But we need to refer to stuff somehow, right? In today's lesson, I go over Definite & Indefinite Articles in Spanish. If you don't know what those are, join the club. Even when I learned Spanish, since I learned on my own, I never knew what those were. Bottom line, it doesn't really matter, as long as you know how to use them. A definite article is simple "the". When you say "the cookie", everybody knows exactly which cookie is being talked about. Which cookie you want is definite. The opposite of that, an indefinite article is when you say "a cookie". Now, you are just saying give me "a" cookie among the many cookies. Which cookie you want is NOT definite. In the plural form, the indefinite article is basically "some" or "a few". I explain it all in the video and of course, give you the lowdown on the Spanish equivalents. So watch the video, do the Articles Worksheet available @ https://spanishdude.com/quickies/articles/ and leave me a comment or message me if you have any questions at all or need some clearing up. Learn Spanish- Nouns, Definite Articles and Classroom Vocabulary

02:52
Learn Spanish- Nouns, Definite Articles and Classroom Vocabulary Aprendiendo Español- Sustantivos, Artículo Definido y Vocabulario de la Clase This lesson might sound like a grammar class, but it is good to learn some vocabulary and some grammar terminology. Do you remember in pasts videos when I talked about sustantivos? Sustantivo (noun) is a word that is the name of a peerson, animal, idea, place, or thing. In Spanish, we can tell what a noun is based on if it has an article in front of it. Article is a word that comes before a noun and signals it as a noun. In English, we use: the a, an In this video, we are going to cover: the (definite article) This means that we are talking about a specific noun. So, if I ask for a book. It is not any book, but a specific book. In Spanish, we say: el, la, los, las What? Four ways?!! These articles help us find out if a noun is masculine, feminine or how many there are. Let's say in English, student. In Spanish is estudiante. So, how do you know if it a female or a male student? Well, you have the article el estudiante (male); la estudiante (female). Ex: el niño, la niña and in the plural los niños and las niñas English used to have genders. Starting in the tenth century until the end of the thirteen century started to disappear from the English language. So, let's start with some classroom vocabulary to get the hang og it. El libro (book) el bolígrafo (pen) el pupitre (student desk) el reloj (watch) el armario (closet, armoire) el diccionario (dictionary) el cuaderno(notebook) la mochila (backpack ) la regla (ruler) To make a noun plural: If it ends in a vowel:add -s If it ends in a consonant: add -es Thanks for watching! Basic English Grammar: Parts of Speech – noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, adverb...

20:06
In this video, I will go over the different parts of speech in English. We will be looking at the use of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. You will also learn how to arrange them in a grammatically correct sentence. Also, I will teach you in what order to place the adjectives if you have more than one. For example, do you have a "big, white, excitable dog" or a "white, excitable, big dog"? Find out by watching this lesson and doing the quiz afterwards at https://www.engvid.com/basic-english-grammar-parts-of-speech/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. James from engVid. I would like to talk about something that will help you understand English, and it's two things. Number one are parts of speech. What are the parts of speech and how do you use them? The second is called syntax, which is a very complicated word for word order. Where do you put the words in a sentence? In some languages they have a different word order, some languages it doesn't really matter, but what my job today is, is to show you where the words go and: What do they basically mean-okay-in the parts of speech? As E said: "Words. Where do they go?" Now, if you're new to English or even if you're an intermediate student, sometimes this causes you problems. Right? You've heard the terms: "preposition", "determiner", "syntax", and you're like: "Oh, it's so complicated." Today's lesson will be simple. You can go over this again and again. It will help you understand and use English better. So I'm going to start off with the most basic part of parts of speech, and I want to start with the things part. Things. Not actions, but things. I am a person. My watch is a thing. Okay? An animal, a cat or a dog, or an apple, these are things. We call these things nouns, because nouns name people - Hi, I'm James; places - Toronto, Ontario; things - my watch; animals - a cat, meow; and food - an apple. Okay? These are nouns. Example: boy, dog, apple. Okay? Nouns name these things. But sometimes you don't want to keep using the same noun again and again. "James ate the apple and James walked his dog as James talked to his friend, Oliver, and then James..." It gets what we call repetitive and boring, and it also makes the sentences go really slow. And sometimes we want to use the noun in a different way. So in this case we introduce what's called pronouns. Pronouns can replace nouns in a sentence. So now you could say something like this: "James ate the apple and he walked his dog." Instead of: "James ate the apple and James walked his dog", we can use a pronoun to replace it and make it simpler. We still know we're talking about James. Now, we talked about word order or syntax. Let me explain this. In order to use a pronoun first you must use the noun. Okay? You introduce the noun and then you can replace it with a pronoun. That's why you see number one then number two. You cannot just start with a pronoun. If I started a sentence at the beginning: "He went to the store." The very first thing you will say to me is: "Who's he?" I go: "Oh, James went to the store and he bought the apples there." And you go: "Oh, now I know who he is." So, pronouns kind of number two because you have to actually introduce first with a noun, then you can replace it with a pronoun. Now, we have several types of pronouns. I'm just going to go over and show you a couple of them so you get an idea. Pronouns include: "I", "we", which are subject pronouns. Object pronouns when we're talking about something that's not us, but something on the other side that receives action, as a subject pronoun I do things. I run. Right? We eat dinner. We're talking to them. Now, when we say "them", you go: "What?" Well, they are receiving it and we call those object pronouns. Okay? So the most basic ones are subject and object pronouns. One is doing something, one is receiving. There are reflexive pronouns, like: "himself" where somebody is talking about themselves. "He built the house himself." So he's talking about him as an object, but reflecting it back to himself. We call it reflexive pronoun. Okay? There are others, but I'm not going to get into them right now because I want to keep this simple just so you know what the parts of speech are, and you can always come to engVid to come and see other lessons in which we go deeply into reflexive pronouns, object and subject pronouns. Okay? Cool. So we talked about how pronouns can replace nouns, and we're good with that. Yeah? So let's go to stage number three, because once you've replaced them, how do you know the difference between them? Apple, apple. I don't know. That's when we have adjectives. Adjectives. The word itself can be broken into two parts: "ject" and "ad". But remember... Do you remember when I said subject and object, and I gave you the example? I said, for instance: "I" is a subject pronoun. Right? Subject, yeah, I'm good at this.

Let's be like children! There are, also, two Spanish picture dictionaries that are designed to help you remember your Spanish vocabulary by using mnemonics. HAVE FUN! A great big "SHOUT OUT" to my college Spanish professor, Dr. Daniel Paniagua, and a great big "SHOUT OUT" to my grandson, Christopher Zion Jackson, for finally making this happen. Praise God! ¡Gloria a Dios! Email: [email protected]

Put on headphones if you need to. Best time is the right before you go to bed. The brain is supposedly more receptive in that relaxed state. The plan: listen to this as often as possible until the words and phrases are natural to you, that you don't even need to think to say them. These phrases can be used mainly for the first encounters. What do you say to people who you don't know at all or don't know very well? Those phrases. My name is Evan (eko). Happy learning. 50 Words You're Pronouncing WRONGLY Right Now! | Top 50 Mispronounced English Words, Common Mistakes

15:54
Learn the TOP 50 MISPRONOUNCED English words. These words are common mistakes made by many English learners. I will show you how to avoid these incorrect pronunciations and say all of these words correctly in this pronunciation lesson. For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello, and welcome back. In this lesson, I will show you fifty words that you are probably pronouncing incorrectly right now. And I’ll also teach you how to say them correctly. Let’s start with this word – how do you say it? Well, we say /prə-’nauns/, /prə-’naunst/ and /prə-’nauns-iŋ/, but /prə-nən- si-’eɪ-shən/. There’s no ‘noun’ in this word. It’s ‘pronunciation.’ Word number two is ‘says’. This word is commonly mispronounced by people learning English as /s eɪs/. But remember: I say, you say, but he or she /sez/. Number three is ‘et cetera’. A very common incorrect pronunciation is to say ‘ek’ – ‘ek setra’ instead of ‘et’. Don’t say that. And also remember that the stress is on ‘ce’. So the word is /et-’se- tə-rə/. You will also hear /et-’se-trə/ – that is less common but it’s OK too. Next up is ‘often’. Some pronounce this as /’äf-tən/. Now, strictly speaking, /’äf- tən/ is not wrong, but the more common pronunciation is with the ‘t’ silent, so I recommend that you always say /’ä-fən/. One word that is often mispronounced by learners of English is ‘women’. This is, of course, because of the English language’s crazy spelling system. But remember that we say /’wu-mən/ for one woman and /’wi-min/ for the plural – /’wi-min/. Word number six is ‘police’. This isn’t /po-lees/ or /po- lis/. It’s /pə/ and /lees/ with the stress on /lees/. So /pə-’lees/. The next word is ‘vehicle’. It’s often pronounced wrongly as /ve-hi-kl/. But the ‘e’ is a long vowel and the ‘h’ is silent. So /’vee-ə-kl/. Number eight is this word. How would you say it? The correct pronunciation is /’zhän-rə/. Pay attention to the first sound, it’s like ‘sh’ but you put your voice into it - /’zhän-rə/. /’zhän-rə/ Next up is actually what you’re watching right now – ‘video’. The important thing is that both the ‘i’ and the ‘e’ are pronounced as short ‘i’ sounds. It’s not /vee-di-o/, it’s /’vi-di-o/. If you watch a video on YouTube or Facebook, you might leave a ‘comment’. I have heard many speakers say /’kə-ment/. Now whether you use this word as a noun or a verb, the first syllable is always /’kä /. So it’s never a /’kə-ment/, it’s a /’kä-ment/. Word number eleven is ‘interesting’. This is mispronounced sometimes as /’in-tə-rə-stiŋ/. But there are only three syllables – /in / – /trə / – /stiŋ/ and the stress is on ‘IN’. So the word is /’in-trə-stiŋ/. Number twelve is ‘hotel’. There are two syllables – /ho/ and / tel/ like the English word ‘tell’ as in ‘tell me’. The stress is on the second syllable, so /ho-’tel/. A related word is ‘suite’. This means a set of connected rooms in a hotel and this is wrongly pronounced by many people as /soot/. But it’s /sweet/ - like when you eat a piece of candy - /sweet/. While we’re on the topic of suites and hotels, I cannot leave out this word – ‘restaurant’. It gives a lot of English learners trouble. But, don’t let the fancy spelling confuse you – the second syllable is just /tə /. The third is /ränt/. So /’res-tə- ränt/. In British English, you might hear just two syllables – /’res-trɒnt/ - that is also correct. After you eat at a restaurant, you have to pay the bill. But you might get a discount on your bill if you have one of these – a ‘coupon’. A common incorrect pronunciation is /’koo-pən/. But the second syllable should be /pän/. So – /’koo-pän/. Here’s word number sixteen – how would you say it? The proper pronunciation is not ‘break’ ‘fast’ – it’s ‘breakfast’. /brek / with a short /e/ sound and /fəst/ with an /ə/ sound - so /’brek-fəst/. You know what I had for breakfast today? I had this – ‘pizza’. Really, I did. It’s not a /pee-sə/ and it’s not a /peed-zə/. There’s no /z/ sound in this word. It’s /peet/, /sə/ - /’peet-sə/. Another food word that’s mispronounced a lot is ‘vegetable’. It’s not /ve-jə- tə-bl/. If you say it correctly, there are only three syllables - /vej/, / tə/, /bl/ - /’vej- tə-bl/. Let’s talk about a couple of vegetables now – this is a ‘cucumber’. It’s not a /ku- koom-bər/. Think of it like saying the letter ‘Q’ and then /kəm-bər/ like ‘number’. So /’kyoo-kəm-bər/. This vegetable is called ‘lettuce’. I know the spelling looks like /let-yoos/ but it’s not – it’s /letis/. And since we talking about food, here’s a food that just about everybody loves – ‘chocolate’. When you ask for this at the store, make sure there are only two syllables – /chäk / and /lət/ - /’chäk-lət/. And remember: there is no ‘late’ in ‘chocolate’. Speaking of chocolate, how would you say this word? This is ‘dessert’.
