This isn't relevant to the Funeral business". or "This isn't relevant to our little town. We are different" Well I have to tell you. It is relevant You know only too well that as an Independent Funeral Director your professional goal is, and always will be, to provide comprehensive and compassionate customer services to those in your community who call upon you in the darkest moments of their lives. Our business goal is to earn a living, provide for your staff and maintain a sustainable legacy for your next generation. These goals are not going anywhere, and they are not mutually exclusive. If our goals remain the same then what is changing? You or someone on your staff probably remember the days when it was simple enough to provide 24 hours service, ample parking, a well maintained Funeral Home and shiny up to date vehicle fleet. While those things are important, the needs of our client families are changing and today's consumer are demanding significantly more from you. Think about the changes in your own community. Think back to the days when you knew your neighbours, where you could leave your doors unlocked, where milk was delivered to your door everyday and where you wouldn't ever worry about the kids walking the streets alone. People talked to each other. We'd stop each other in the street to say hello and find out the latest gossip. We'd wait to get home to read the local newspaper or watch the TV for all the news. Samantha Fox was in the sun. We would even use the Yellow Pages and look forward to the next updated tome arriving in 6 months time. I even remember my Dad excitedly showing me his first pager in the early 1980's.. and proudly telling me that if I called a certain number, left a message and assuming he was within a 1 mile radius he would get my message within 30 minutes and then if he could find a payphone he could call me back. Yes that pager is now in the science museum alongside my ZX Spectrum and even my first Ericsson mobile phone. It's quite amazing to think that today's youth have never seen an audio casette, a video cassette for that matter, a telephone with a wire, and for anybody with teenage kids you know they prefer to text and email each other rather than speak - even if they are in the same room. Today's community is different. Today's community doesn't communicate the same way we used to. Whether we like it or not. Behaviours have changed. Word of mouth today means WhatsApp, Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube, FaceTime. OK, so maybe you are still saying "Yeah, got that. But that only applies to the youth and definitely doesn't apply to something as sensitive as Funeral planning" Think again Here's a graph directly from Google. This shows the relative popularity of a search term since 2004. A rising line means the search term is being used over time and a decreasing line means it is getting used less over time, as a relative term to other searches. What's the search term here? "Funeral Directors". This doesn't even show the massive exponential rise in people searching online over the last decade it's just showing the relative popularity of the term. Look Funeral Directors is becoming a fair more popular search term. Which means more people are trying to find you online. And when they find you, you want to make sure that the impression is as good as if they walked through your Funeral Home door... if not better. OK, so rather than trends let's talk numbers. How many times do you think Funeral Directors was a search term in England last month? 110,000! cont'd.....

It allows you to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot your business model. The Business Model Canvas is comprised of 9 key segments: The left hand section of the Business Model Canvas is the Infrastructure section and comprises three key areas: Key Activities: The most important activities in executing a company's value proposition. Key Resources: The resources that are necessary to create value for the customer. Partner Network: In order to optimize operations and reduce risks of a business model, organization usually cultivate buyer-supplier relationships so they can focus on their core activity. The middle section of the canvas describes the business offering and is the value proposition delivered to different customer segments. Value Propositions: The collection of products and services a business offers to meet the needs of its customers. According to Osterwalder, (2004), a company's value proposition is what distinguishes itself from its competitors. The value proposition provides value through various elements such as newness, performance, customization, "getting the job done", design, brand/status, price, cost reduction, risk reduction, accessibility, and convenience/usability. The value propositions may be: Quantitative – price and efficiency Qualitative – overall customer experience and outcome The right hand side of the Business Model Canvas describes the customers, the channels through which you deliver services and and the relationships you have with your customers. Customer Segments: To build an effective business model, a company must identify which customers it tries to serve. Various sets of customers can be segmented based on the different needs and attributes to ensure appropriate implementation of corporate strategy meets the characteristics of selected group of clients. Channels: A company can deliver its value proposition to its targeted customers through different channels. Effective channels will distribute a company’s value proposition in ways that are fast, efficient and cost effective. An organization can reach its clients either through its own channels (store front), partner channels (major distributors), or a combination of both. Customer Relationships: To ensure the survival and success of any businesses, companies must identify the type of relationship they want to create with their customer segments. The bottom section of the canvas describes the finances. Cost Structure: This describes the most important monetary consequences while operating under different business models. A company's DOC. One really cool solution to Asymmetric Information market failure are Brands! A lot of the information in this video is from Thomas Sowell's book "Basic Economics". From Thomas Sowell's book "Basic Economics": When the processed food industry first began in nineteenth century America, it was common for producers to adulterate food items with less expensive fillers. Horseradish, for example, was often sold in colored bottles, to conceal the adulteration. But when Henry J. Heinz began selling unadulterated horseradish in clear bottles,{ 281} this gave him a decisive advantage over his competitors, who fell by the wayside while the Heinz company went on to become one of the enduring giants of American industry, still in business in the twenty-first century and highly successful. When the H.J. Heinz company was sold in 2013, the price was $ 23 billion.{ Brands have not always existed. They came into existence and then survived and spread for a reason. In eighteenth century England, for example, only a few luxury goods, such as Chippendale furniture, were known by their manufacturer’s brand name. It was an innovation when Josiah Wedgwood put his name on chinaware that he sold and which ultimately became world famous for its quality and appearance.{ 949} In the United States, brand names began to flourish around the time of the Civil War. In nineteenth century America, most food processors did not put brand names on the food that they sold—a situation which allowed adulteration of food to flourish. When Henry Heinz entered this business and sold unadulterated processed food, he identified his products with his name, reaping the benefits of the reputation he established among consumers, which allowed his company to expand rapidly, and an array of new processed foods bearing his name to be readily accepted by the public from the outset.{ 950} In short, the rise of brands promoted better quality by allowing consumers to distinguish and choose, and by forcing producers to take responsibility for what they made, reaping rewards when it was good and losing customers when it was not. As The Economist reported: "In the old Soviet Union, where all products were supposed to be the same, consumers learnt how to read barcodes as substitutes for brands in order to identify goods that came from reliable factories." In effect, Soviet consumers created brands de facto for their own benefit, where none existed, indicating that brands have value to consumers as well as producers. Narration --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The movie Host vs Advertising Host is actually more of a love story in a sci-fi setting than a serious sci-fi movie. That’s probably why they used a pre-packaged, out-of-the-box, one-size-fits-all futuristic we-have-solved-all-your-problems-cause-we’re-so-ancient-and-advanced, star-trek-esk perfect society, for the society the aliens establish on earth. Why do they need human bodies as hosts? Ehh whatever … That society lives in perfect harmony, has gotten rid of pesky things like money and therefore has no need for advertising. Paradise, right? No more billboards. No TV ads. So lets look at the economics of this. What is advertising? Advertising of course is an evil thing that big corporations do to force you to buy their products at a much higher price than they’re actually worth, by brainwashing you to think their product is somehow special. Consumers are completely defenseless and have no chance to resist it. Well, we of course are an exception ourselves because we’re smart and educated, but stupid people, namely the people who buy those products, are obviously helpless and incapable of resisting the brainwashing. Occasionally we buy those products too, but only well, if we had no other choice, because it was kinda convenient and we didn’t have time to go to the non-mainstream-eco-fair-trade-organic-no-brand-bring-your-own-shopping-tote-zero-carbon-footprint-locally-sourced-recycle-everything store, that doesn’t mean that we’re stupid or brainwashed, only those other people are who actually think those products are good. So in conclusion, advertising is pure evil … and a waste of resources. Let's be like that wise futuristic alien society … that needs human bodies as host. Humour in the graphic advertising of Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (1960-2009)
Introduction: The objective of this research article is to analyse the use of humour as a semantic resource in the advertising campaigns of Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic and identify the emotions expressed in the ads that use this resource. Methods: An interdisciplinary methodological approach is used to review previous research on humour as a resource for the development of the content and form of advertising messages. A historical review of the graphic advertising of the General Directorate of Traffic is offered to establish when and how humour has been used in the configuration of its advertising messages. The universe under study consists of all the graphic advertising used by the General Directorate of Traffic from 1959 to 2009 (a total of 246 ads). Results and conclusions: The results confirm the presence of humour as a semantic resource in the advertising campaigns of Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic across the decades under study. In turn, the ads that use humour associate this resource with the objectives, messages and types of emotions the General Directorate of Traffic aims to project.

Yuval Harari is the expert on human evolution. I've recommended his book "Sapiens" more than any other book in the past 5 years. And now Yuval has a brand new book, "21 Lessons for The 21st Century," which covers so many topics: he tells us what you start can doing now to feel more comfortable and prepared for all these changes🔥 In 21 Lessons For The 21st Century, Yuval explore so many topics: “the myth of free will,” the rise of robots, algorithms, hackers, how the Automation Revolution will impact the economy, your job, your quality of life and so on. Plus, he also gives solutions. And they’re all worth contemplating. This interview is probably the most thought-provoking interview I’ve ever aired. Here’s 3 things Yuval Noah Harari made me question: A) Are we actually better off? Yuval says “Life was much more colorful and rich 10,000 years ago.” We foraged. We climbed trees. We weren’t sitting at desks or managing cash register machines. We were moving. But history books have branded the Agricultural Revolution as a good thing. A “revolution.” But Yuval argues that farming and harvesting wheat was actually a negative to the species in many ways. It’s both. Positive: we can feed more people. Negative: our diet changes to wheat-based instead of plants, vegetables, etc. And our brains might have shrunk as a result of us only be aware of the space around us and not the greater landscape, which lead to city-states and kingdoms and war. Because we fought each other for resources. And Yuval says life as a hunter-gatherer is far more interesting than some of the mundane jobs of the 21st century. And Yuval has other examples. How many “revolutions” are actually net-negatives? B) What happens if I’m not the main character? Everyday, I think about my day. What am I going to do? What do I want to eat? Where am I going? Yuval said, “Every time you change your perspective, you see a completely different world.” “Don’t look at from the viewpoint of the king. look at from the viewpoint of the peasant. Don’t look at from the viewpoint of the human. Look at it from the viewpoint of the cow.” C) Is free will a myth? Yuval says free will is a myth. “People know so little about themselves,” he said. “Both on the biological level, certainly. How many people really understand their brains? But even on the psychological level… we have an entire profession of therapists who are just trying to help us get in touch with ourselves because it’s so difficult.” Yuval says that free will only exists if you know what your will actually is. But if you everything want in life comes from school, your parents, cultural manipulation, advertising, propaganda, etc., then do you really have your own desires? “Once you realize, no, my desires don’t reflect my free will, they reflect all kinds of processes on the biological level, on the psychological level, which I don’t understand, then you start being very curious about yourself.” His book and this interview leads to so many new questions. Which is the essense of growth. Learning comes from wondering. Yuval will make you young again. He’ll make you curious again. Bill Imada '84 (Human Resource Management) is founder, chairman and chief collaboration officer of IW Group, Inc., one of the foremost minority-owned-and-operated advertising, marketing and communications agencies focusing on growing multicultural markets. For more than 20 years, Bill has represented some of the top companies in the U.S., including American Airlines, Coca-Cola, Farmers Insurance, Godiva Chocolatier, McDonald's, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Southern California Edison, Verizon Wireless, Walt Disney Imagineering, Warner Bros. Pictures, Walmart Stores and many others. His company has won more than 40 prestigious industry awards and is the most decorated Asian agency in the history of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) Multicultural Awards. He was named one of the "Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business" by the Asian American Business Development Center in 2009. His friends and colleagues call Bill a "humble" professional who uses his expansive networks to create partnerships and connect others in need of jobs and resources.
