OECD Report: Scaling up Private Investment in LCR Infrastructure through Green Banks

01:09:19
This webinar features an overview of the highly anticipated report, "Green Investment Banks: Scaling up Private Investment in Low-carbon, Climate-resilient Infrastructure". Produced by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the report provides the first comprehensive study of publicly capitalised Green Investment Banks (GIBs) and analyses the rational, mandate and financing activities of this relatively new category of public financial institution. Based on the experience of over a dozen GIBs and GIB-like entities, the report provides non-prescriptive stock-taking of the diverse ways in which these public institutions are catalysing private investment in LCR infrastructure and other green sectors, with a spotlight on energy efficiency projects. The report also provides a summary for policy makers to guide the establishment, capitalization and operationalization of green investment banks. Robert Youngman, Team Leader of the OECD's Climate, Finance and Investment Unit, presents takeaways from the report. Douglass Sims, Director of Strategy and Finance at the Natural Resources Defense Council Center for Market Innovation, moderates the presentation and Q&A and will provide an introduction to the Green Bank Network.

'With AIIB China hopes to achieve a win-win situation for all nations' - Rebecca Chan (sputniknews) http://sputniknews.com/ https://soundcloud.com/radiosputnik/with-aiib-china-hopes-to-achieve-a-win-win-situation-for-all-nations-rebecca-chan The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank - or AIIB - will be different from institutions like the World Bank as it has a better understanding of the developing world's needs. That’s what AIIB's officials said in a joint statement at the bank’s first annual meeting. The latter was held in Beijing on Sunday. The statement came after the bank approved on Saturday its first four loans for projects worth half a billion US dollars in total. The loans are aimed at power network expansion and upgrade in Bangladesh, a slum upgrade project in India, a motorway in Pakistan and road improvements in Tajikistan. AIIB's president, Jin Liqun said: "These projects, which span the energy, urban development and transport sectors, will help to bridge the region’s critical infrastructure-financing gap and strengthen regional connectivity". The Asian Infrastructure Investment bank was launched in Beijing last year to promote investment in Asia in transportation, energy, telecommunications and other infrastructure. "Green Landing" - Top Priority of The European Investment Bank (EIB) in East Africa

More on http://solarpv.tv/ - HyperMedia Business Platform During During RES4AFRICA Program Launch Event “A step change in the deployment of Renewable Energy in Eastern Africa” held in Nairobi Kenya we had an exclusive opportunity to speak to Catherine Collin, Head of Regional Representation Eastern & Central Africa European Investment Bank. Catherine has over 25 years of experience in the banking in`\\dustry with focus on development finance, particularly in sub-saharan Africa and in the Balkans, combined with in depth knowledge and understanding of EU financing mechanisms and institutional set up. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is jointly owned by the EU countries. It seeks to: boost Europe's potential in terms of jobs & growth support action to mitigate climate change promote EU policies outside the EU. What the EIB does? The Bank borrows money on capital markets and lends it on favourable terms to projects that support EU objectives. About 90 % of loans are made within the EU. None of the money comes from the EU budget. The EIB provides 3 main types of products and services: Lending – about 90 % of its total financial commitment. The Bank lends to clients of all sizes to support growth and jobs, and this support often helps to attract other investors. 'Blending' - allowing clients to combine EIB financing with additional investment. Advising and technical assistance - maximising value for money. The EIB makes loans above EUR 25 million directly. Where smaller loans are involved, it opens credit lines for financial institutions that then lend funds to creditors. Composition All EU countries are shareholders in the EIB. Decisions are taken by the following bodies: the Board of Governors, comprising ministers (mostly finance ministers) from all EU countries. It defines general lending policy. the Board of Directors, chaired by the EIB President, which comprises 28 members appointed by the EU countries and one appointed by the European Commission. It approves lending and borrowing operations. the Management Committee, the Bank's executive body, which handles day-to-day business. The Audit Committee checks that EIB operations are conducted in a proper manner. The Bank's departments implement management decisions. How does the EIB work? It makes borrowing and lending decisions, based on the merits of each project and the opportunities offered by financial markets. Within the EU, it has specific lending priorities. Outside the EU, it supports the EU development and cooperation policies worldwide. As an independent body, the Bank takes its own borrowing and lending decisions. It cooperates with other EU institutions, especially the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the Council of the EU.

The Investment Plan reaches the real economy

Europe needs investment to create jobs, make Euro more competitive, to strengthen the single market and support small businesses. A first major initiative of Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission is therefore the Investment plan for Europe. In one year time, it mobilised more than €100 billion of investment, with 249 approved transactions via the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI). This money is aimed at projects that find it difficult to secure finance in the market. With more and more projects being chosen each month, the target of mobilising over €315 billion by 2018, is well underway. The EIB is fundamental in an era of financialisation: Interview with Mariana Mazzucato

05:07
It’s time to stop bashing the public sector and start enabling public institutions to achieve their full potential in global innovation. This is the overriding message of world-class economist Mariana Mazzucato in an interview with the EIB. The University of Sussex professor visited the EIB on 8 March 2016 to discuss ‘The Entrepreneurial State and the Role of Public Banks.’ Professor Mazzucato shared her thoughts on the role that public institutions can play in fostering innovation with long-term finance. To ensure the survival of the EU, she urged the need for an innovation-led investment strategy, with the EIB assuming a central role. In addition, Mazzucato underlined the EU bank’s role as the global leader in market-relevant climate finance. Green growth offers immense potential for innovation, and public banks have a leading role to play in forging development in this area.

"Brexit" Does Not Affect UK's Role in AIIB, Says Bank's President

01:14
The position of the United Kingdom in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will not be affected by its decision to leave the European Union, the bank's president Jin Liqun said Saturday. "We certainly believe that whatever happens in the following-up of the Brexit, (the) UK remains one of the biggest shareholders of the AIIB, and I believe (the) UK will continue to play an important role in the development of this bank," Jin said at a press conference in Beijing on the sidelines of the AIIB's first annual meeting. The UK has a 3.11 percent stake in the AIIB and is the tenth biggest shareholder of the 57-member financial institution. It was also the first Western country seeking to become a founding member of the China-initiated multilateral infrastructure bank. "So I cannot rule out the possibility of not setting up any office in London, I cannot rule out any possibility of not setting up an office in some other cities in Europe. Setting up an office actually depends on the need of our bank's future development," the president added. The AIIB has an authorized capital of 100 billion U.S. dollars, equivalent to around half that of the World Bank. China, India and Russia are the bank's three largest shareholders. Haitong Bank's New China Index: lifting the lid on Chinese investment | World Finance

04:50
China and Europe trade well over €1bn every day, according to EC statistics. Haitong Bank – the product of the acquisition of Portugal's BESI by China's Haitong Securities – offers Europe and China a platform for even greater trade and investment. The bank's CEO, José Maria Ricciardi, explains why it has launched a New China Index, to track the transformation of China's economy from one dependent on manufacturing and heavy industry, to a more service-driven, technological one. He also highlights the key sectors that China is investing in overseas, including €21bn into Europe last year. And he suggests that the potential for Chinese capital renewing Europe's ageing infrastructure could be enormous. Head of AIIB on impact of Brexit

01:15
(25 Jun 2016) The Brexit is worrisome but it won't affect cooperation between the United Kingdom and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), its President Jin Liqun said on Saturday after the first annual meeting of the bank in Beijing. Jin, however, defined the British decision to leave the European Union and its effects on the markets as "a little bit worrisome". The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank was launched in January with 57 member governments. The bank reflects China's rapidly growing financial might and desire for a bigger voice in global finance, which is dominated by the United States and Europe. Despite initial US opposition, the AIIB attracted unexpectedly wide support from US allies including Britain, France, Australia and South Korea. Washington and Japan have refrained from seeking membership. The bank approved its inaugural projects on Friday with total funding of 509 million US dollars. AIIB to form international advisory panel

01:04
The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, or AIIB, is planning to ask former leaders from around the world to join an international advisory committee. The AIIB was launched last year to assist in Asian infrastructure projects. The advisory committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting on October 19th. Informed sources have told NHK that the new body will comprise 9 members. Former Japanese prime minister Yukio Hatoyama has accepted an offer to serve on the committee. The sources say the AIIB is also considering appointments for former Pakistani prime minister Shaukat Aziz and OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria of Mexico. Also among the candidates are former finance ministers of Sweden and East Timor. The sources add that the former US executive director of the Asian Development Bank, Paul Speltz, will also join the committee. Neither the United States nor Japan is participating in the AIIB. Observers say that by appointing panel members from non-member countries, the bank is apparently trying to stress its willingness to listen to various opinions. What role the panel would play is likely to draw attention, as China greatly influences the AIIB, and holds the right to effectively veto major deals.
