How a business school can empower women in business

04:26
Women own or manage more than 30 per cent of all businesses but are found at the top of only 5 per cent or less of the biggest enterprises, according to a report from the United Nations, published last week. The UN’s report estimated that without new actions to promote women’s equality in management, it could take up to 200 years to achieve gender parity in positions of business leadership. At RSM, we are not patient enough to wait. We have already started researching gender equality, and offering education and mentoring programmes, events and coaching for individuals and organisations at our recently-launched Erasmus Centre for Women and Organisations (www.rsm.nl/ecwo). Here, Academic Director of the Centre Professor Dianne Bevelander talks to RSM Discovery to explain how a business school can help women to tackle gender issues at work. What makes a great leader? by Peter Senge, Author of The Fifth Discipline

03:13
Peter Senge is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership and Sustainability at the MIT Sloan School of Management. The Journal of Business Strategy (September/October 1999) named Senge one of the 24 people who has had the greatest influence on business strategy over the last 100 years. The Financial Times (2000) named him one of the world’s top management gurus, andBusinessWeek (October 2001) rated Senge one of the top 10 management gurus. Senge has lectured extensively throughout the world, translating the abstract ideas of systems theory into tools for better understanding of economic and organizational change. He studies decentralizing the role of leadership in organizations so as to enhance the ability of employees to work productively toward common goals, and the managerial and institutional changes needed to build more sustainable enterprises—those businesses that foster social and natural as well as economic well-being. Senge’s work articulates a cornerstone position of human values in the workplace: namely, that vision, purpose, reflectiveness, and systems thinking are essential if organizations are to realize their potential. He has worked with leaders in business, education, civil society, healthcare, and government. Senge is the founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL), a global community of corporations, researchers, and consultants dedicated to the “interdependent development of people and their institutions.” He is the author of the widely acclaimed book, The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of The Learning Organization (1990). With colleagues Charlotte Roberts, Rick Ross, Bryan Smith, and Art Kleiner, he is the co-author of The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook: Strategies and Tools for Building a Learning Organization (1994) and a second fieldbook The Dance of Change: The Challenges to Sustaining Momentum in Learning Organizations (March 1999), co-authored by George Roth. In September 2000, Senge co-authored a fieldbook on education, the award-winning Schools That Learn: A Fifth Discipline Fieldbook for Educators, Parents, and Everyone Who Cares About Education (2000). The Fifth Discipline hit a nerve within the business and education communities by introducing the theory of learning organizations. Since its publication, more than one million copies have been sold worldwide. In 1997, Harvard Business Review identified it as one of the seminal management books of the past 75 years. The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook was developed in response to questions from readers of The Fifth Discipline who wanted more help with tools, methods, and practical experiences in developing enhanced learning capabilities within their own companies. The Dance of Change is based on more recent experiences of companies developing learning capabilities over many years, and the strategies leaders develop to deal with the many challenges this work entails. He also has authored many articles published in both academic journals and the business press on systems thinking in management, and has co-authored Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the Future. Senge holds a BS in engineering from Stanford University as well as an SM in social systems modeling and a PhD in management from MIT. #DESCRIPTION In answer to this question, Peter Senge discusses the concept of leadership and what it means. He defines leadership as different from management and explains why leadership is not about the role - it is about the spirit. Finding Harvard Business Review articles and case studies

01:37
Finding articles and case studies in the Harvard Business Review is now easier than ever with the new library catalog. To find them, make sure you’re starting at the library’s homepage, http://libraries.luc.edu. Next, click in the search box and type “Harvard Business Review” then click search. Your first result should be the Harvard Business Review. You’ll see we have both online and physical copies. All you have to do is click on the title, “Harvard Business Review.” You’ll now see that the journal has opened within the catalog. However, it can be a little awkward to read it this way. Instead of reading this way, you can click on the link that says “Open source in a new window” and it should pop open in a full view. Now you have two options: One is to browse through the dates and find the exact issue that you need. Instead of browsing through the dates, you can click on the link that says “search within this publication.” Now you can search with any date, author, title, or keyword to find the article you need. Once you’ve found the article you need, just click on PDF full text and you can read the article right in your browser. There are a few other options here, such as saving this article to read it later, or generating a permanent link so you can return to this article and read it any time.

Changing the face of poverty | Ronald Hill | TEDxVillanovaU

17:42
When most of us think about poor people, we either conjure up images of a homeless man we passed on the streets, a movie or favorite novel such as Oliver Twist, or folklore about starving people in a faraway land. Of course, there are seeds of truth in fictional accounts and casual meetings, but they often rise to a level of understanding that fails to resonate with many of the poor. Even basic ideas about poverty lack clarity; for example, what is the line between poor and not poor both within and among countries? Is it only about income or do other resources matter or act as substitutes for money? Is poverty in the U.S. the same or different than poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa? Answers to some of these questions are provided in this Ted Talk. Ronald Paul Hill, Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Maryland is the Richard J. and Barbara Naclerio Endowed Chairholder, Villanova School of Business. He has authored nearly 200 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers on topics that include impoverished consumer behavior, marketing ethics, corporate social responsibility, and public policy. Outlets for this research are Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Business and Society, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Human Rights Quarterly, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Harvard Business Review, and Journal of Public Policy and Marketing. His term as Editor of the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing extended from July 2006 until June 2012. His recent awards include: 2012 Williams-Qualls-Spratlen Multicultural Mentoring Award of Excellence, 2012 Villanova University Outstanding Faculty Research Award, 2010 Pollay Prize for Excellence in the Study of Ma This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. What is your one stand out "reflection from practice"? Peter Senge, Author of The Fifth Discipline

02:56
#DESCRIPTION One of the additions to the revised version of, The Fifth Discipline, was to include “reflections from practice.” Peter Senge talks about what a pleasure it was to add interviews with his own “heroes” and their thoughts on management. How can we create a culture of innovation? by Peter Senge, Author of The Fifth Discipline

04:17
#DESCRIPTION Peter Senge starts off by defining innovation and then points to the management guru, Peter Drucker, for an understanding of innovation and the processes that need to happen to foster creativity.
