Child kidnapping stopped: Hero bus driver saves three-year-old from abductor - TomoNews

01:47
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA — A Northern California bus driver is being hailed a hero after he says he followed his parental instincts, an intuition so sharp it led him to stop a kidnapper from abducting a young boy on Friday. A 3-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at the Milpitas Public Library at around 10:40 a.m. Local police quickly responded, closing the library to incoming and outgoing traffic and sending alerts to all area bus drivers to be on the lookout. Tim Watson was on his morning shift when he caught sight of one of the alerts and about an hour later, the driver noticed a passenger in his mid-20's with a crying boy, both of whom matched descriptions mentioned in the police alert. Trusting his fatherly instincts Watson pulled the bus over and announced that someone had lost a backpack. "What I'm really trying to do is to get up without him knowing to look at the little boy," Watson told ABC 7 News. "So sure enough, I see the plaid shorts and red shoes. That's what really stuck out in my mind." The father of two noticed the boy's red shoes and quickly radioed police. "And that's when my own kids came to mind and I just broke down. I couldn't hold myself down. I just had to go inside the bus and reflect," said Watson. The parents of the child were too emotional to speak publicly, but were thankful to both the police and Watson for rescuing their little boy. Milpitas police detained Alfonso David Edington, 23, who had no connections to the family and is currently being held on charges of kidnapping. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Yeonmi Park’s story: Escapee from North Korea speaks out

02:02
Meet Yeonmi Park. At 21 she looks like a typical university student enjoying the perks of living in Seoul, South Korea’s ultra-modern capital city. It’s hard to believe that she was actually born and grew up in a small port village in North Korea, along the river that defines the border between the North and it’s largest neighbor, China. Today Yeonmi is an outspoken activist, telling her family’s story about their harrowing escape from North Korea, ruled by one of the world’s most reclusive and repressive regimes. At a young age Yeonmi was indoctrinated with North Korean ideology, where Kim Jong-il and his family are treated as gods and any dissent is punished with prison and torture. The government tightly controls everything and limits citizens’ access to the outside world. When Yeonmi was just 13 years old she was invited to watch the execution of her best friend’s mother. The woman had been arrested for watching South Korean movies and sharing the DVDs with friends. She along with several others were executed by firing squad for their crime. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Brazil homeless hero killed on video saving woman held hostage by Sao Paulo shooter - TomoNews

01:58
SAO PAULO — A violent drama played out on the steps of the Sao Paulo Cathedral, in Brazil's largest city, last Friday afternoon, when a hunted criminal took a woman hostage in an attempt to evade capture by police. 49-year-old Luiz Antonio da Silva had just finished a 22-year stint in prison, when he again ran afoul of the cops. After 20 minutes praying in the church with this 25-year-old woman, he attempted to use her as a human shield to avoid police. When da Silva exited the church, the woman caught a cop's attention, so da Silva fired at him. At the familiar sound of gunfire, a crowd of pedestrians gather at the scene, showing how inured to violence people in Sao Paulo have become. But out of the gawking crowd, only a 61-year-old homeless man named Francisco Erasmo Rodrigues de Lima took it upon himself to do something. While police held the gunman's attention, de Lima snuck around a parked truck and up the steps. Then de Lima crept all the way up to the gunman and dove on him, freeing the hostage. It's at this point that perceptions diverge. The men fight and da Silva and the police both start shooting. In a moment, both men will be dead. Police say that after the old vagrant knocked da Silva onto the ground, the gunman fired several shots into de Lima's chest. Yet others say da Silva missed, and it was a police bullet that killed the brave man. Whichever the case, the last incredible act shown on the video is members of the Sao Paulo police disregarding de Lima as he bleeds to death, alone, in the church doorway. A homeless friend of Francisco Erasmo Rodrigues de Lima said the 61 year old father of four often stepped up to intervene in fights. He had lived on the streets for 10 years before he died. De Lima was buried north of Sao Paulo following a small ceremony with his estranged wife and two children in attendance. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. New York thief steals $1.6m bucket of gold from armored truck parked in Manhattan - TomoNews

01:52
NEW YORK — Surveillance footage released by the New York Police Department this week shows the alleged theft of a bucket of gold flakes worth nearly $1.6 million from an armored truck. The alleged theft took place on West 48th Street in Manhattan on Sept. 29 when the 86-pound bucket was left unattended by security guards in the back of the parked truck, the New York Times reported. When one guard left to make a collection, the other went to retrieve his cellphone from the cab. Police said it was during this 20-second window that the suspect committed the crime. The man saw an opportunity and probably did not know what was inside the bucket, according to police. Surveillance footage captured the moment the suspect grabbed the bucket from the back of the truck and walked calmly away through the crowds. Police said the suspect headed east down 48th Street, pausing often to regain his breath, before disappearing near Third Avenue, according to the New York Times. WNBC New York reported that the man got into a white van, but that was not clear from the surveillance footage. Police described the suspect as a Hispanic man, aged between 50 and 60 years old. He is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds and was wearing a black vest, green shirt, blue jeans, and carrying a black messenger bag. Police believe the man is hiding in Florida and could be in the Orlando or Miami area. The bucket of gold has not been recovered. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ISIS attack: Trapped Russian soldier calls airstrike on himself to kill ISIS fighters - TomoNews

01:27
PALMYRA, SYRIA — A transcript of the final communications between soldier Alexander Prokhorenko and Russian Special Forces has been released, detailing the final moments before his called in his own death, trapped in ISIS territory. Prokhorenko was stationed near Palmyra, Syria, in charge of directing airstrikes on ISIS targets. Alone, he suddenly realized he was dangerously low on ammunition and surrounded by terrorists, with no possible escape route. He radioed his commander to communicate his dire situation, and instructed him to go ahead with airstrikes, taking out ISIS jihadists along with his own life in the resulting attack. According to the transcript, Prokhorenko's words were "I am surrounded, they are outside, I don't want them to take me and parade me, conduct the airstrike, they will make a mockery of me and this uniform." His commander refused, ordering Prokhorenko to get to safety before any such command would be ordered. The brave Prokhorenko told him "I want to die with dignity and take all these bastards with me. Please, my last wish, conduct the airstrike, they will kill me either way." His commander acknowledged his plight, ordering in the airstrikes, and sealing Prokhorenko's fate. In his final transmission, he thanked his commander, said he had "the best wife in the world," and was serving the nation he loved. His wife, Ekaterina, was reportedly unaware that her husband was even serving in Syria. They'd been married only 18 months, and reports indicate they were expecting their first child. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ‘Shopping while black’: Racial profiling caught on tape, Rashid Polo viral Vine video

01:43
Rashid Polo, of Rochester, Minnesota, is an overnight internet celebrity whose recent Vine videos are shedding light on a sensitive topic … shopping while black. While shopping at a convenience store back in February, Polo noticed a pattern developing. No matter where he went in the store, a suspicious attendant always seemed to follow. As she busied herself with random tasks, she cast vilifying stares at Polo, who eventually had enough. He whipped out his cell phone and began recording. If you’re saying to yourself right now that racial shopping discrimination doesn’t exist, chances are, you’re a white person. Barney’s New York, to give just one example, has repeatedly been accused of mistreating black shoppers. In the case of 19-year-old Trayon Christian, undercover police officers arrested him when he walked out of Barneys with a $350 belt, despite having shown them proof of purchase. Even Oprah can’t avoid racial profiling. Last year, a Swiss clerk refused to show the media mogul a handbag, saying it would “cost to much.” Polo’s second “shopping while black” Vine video has garnered 14 million loops in a little over a week and attracted more than 15,000 followers so far. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews

01:45
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser propulsion: NASA's laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews

01:41
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA — NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that's capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ocean cleaning machine: Australian surfers quit jobs, invent Seabin to clean up ocean - TomoNews

01:25
PERTH, AUSTRALIA — Two Australia surfers are gaining the attention from investors around the world for their invention of a device that helps clean the ocean, according to Australia's ABC News. ABC News reports that Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, who are best friends, became frustrated over the amount of trash that was floating in the ocean. They decided to quit their jobs to come up with a sustainable solution to the problem of ocean pollution, and invented the Seabin. The Seabin is an automated rubbish bin designed to be mounted on marina docks to help clean the water. According to the duo's company website, the Seabin, which is built from recycled materials, is mounted to a dock and connected to water pump that is powered by an source on the shore. The pump pulls water through the Seabin, thus bringing all the floating rubbish and debris in the water into a natural fibre bag inside the device before water is pumped back out. The floating debris is captured inside the Seabin, and water flows out through the bottom of the bin and pulled up into the pump on the dock. There is also an option to attach an oil and water separating device to the water pump to clean the water before it is returned to the ocean. "It essentially works as a similar concept to a skimmer box from your pool filter. But it's designed on a scale to work and essentially attract all that rubbish within a location within a marine harbour," said Seabin spokesperson Richard Talmage, as quoted by ABC News. ABC News reports that the duo designed a prototype of the bin in Perth before taking it to market in Mallorca in Spain, a marina capital of Europe. A crowdfunding effort has already raised $50,000 for commercial production of the Seabin, and a video of the device has attracted more than 10 million hits online. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. D.B. Cooper mystery: 45 years on, skyjacker who stole $200,000 remains an enigma - TomoNews

07:05
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — It’s almost 45 years since a hijacker known by the pseudonym “D.B. Cooper” jumped out of plane above America’s Pacific Northwest clutching a $200,000 cash ransom. More than four decades later, the crime has never been solved and the FBI stopped actively investigating the case in July. The legend of D.B. Cooper began at the Northwest Orient Airlines flight counter at Portland International Airport on Nov. 24, 1971, when a man identifying himself as “Dan Cooper” paid cash for a one-way ticket on Flight 305 to Seattle, a mere 30-minute journey. On board, Cooper showed a flight attendant an explosive device in his briefcase and demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby at the airport in Seattle. The plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma Airport, where a bag filled with cash and parachutes was delivered, and Cooper released all 36 passengers, along with two flight attendants. The plane took off again, bound for Mexico City, scheduled to stop to refuel in Reno, Nevada. As Cooper sat alone in the cabin, crew members in the cockpit noticed a sudden upward tilt in the plane’s tail section, which required trimming to get the aircraft back to its flight level. Investigators believe this could be the moment D.B. Cooper made his exit by leaping into the freezing cold air, through the clouds, and to an unknown fate. In all the years that have followed, only two pieces of hard evidence have ever been found. In 1978, a hunter found the fragment of a placard for lowering the back stairs of a Boeing 727 along the flight path of the plane. Two years later, about 20 miles southwest of Ariel, Washington a boy discovered $5,800 in damaged cash from Cooper’s haul. The FBI has investigated more than a thousand suspects in the case, but has never been able to identify D.B. Cooper. The bureau officially ended active investigation of the case in July, citing a lack of new information. More than $194,000, the equivalent of more than a million dollars today, has never been recovered. The FBI suspects that D.B. Cooper didn’t survive the jump, but their guess about what really happened is as good as yours or mine. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Racism at Chili’s: Black veteran has free meal revoked after Trump supporter complaint - TomoNews

03:05
CEDAR HILL, TEXAS — A military veteran taking advantage of a complimentary meal at a Chili’s in North Texas had his food taken away after his service was called into question by a fellow customer. Ernest Walker proudly served in 25th Infantry of the U.S. Army, Division Tropic Lightning. On November 11, the army vet was waiting for his food with his service dog, Barack. The restaurant offers all active service members and veterans a free meal on Veterans Day as a thank you. The meal took half an hour to be served, and as Walker had to go, he asked the waitress to put it in a to-go box for him. As he was waiting for his doggy bag, he says an elderly man wearing a Trump t-shirt walked over and questioned him about his time in the military. The man, who himself claimed to be a World War 2 vet serving in Germany, didn’t believe Walker was actually a veteran. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told Walker another guest said he wasn’t a veteran because he was wearing his hat indoors. After providing his discharge papers and his military ID, the manager then told him the guest also said his dog was not a service dog. That’s when Walker started recording the incident on his smartphone. After arguing for the duration of the video, the manager took Walker’s to-go box away and told him to “have a great day.” Following the unfortunate exchange, Walker posted the video to Facebook, and the story has since gotten back to Chili’s, who have responded saying the situation has been escalated to the highest levels of the company. So far, Walker hasn’t yet been contacted by anyone at Chili’s or its ownership group, but the two sides are expected to meet this week. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Shigeharu Shimamura teams up with GE to grow lettuce indoors faster, cleaner and cheaper

01:59
A 2300 square meter former semiconductor plant has become the world's largest indoor vegetable farm, thanks to Shigeru Shimamura and special LED lights from General Electric. The farm produces 10,000 heads of lettuce per day all while using less than 1% of the water needed for a normal farm, and none of the weather or pest related risks that come with growing outdoors. Produce waste is also slashed from 50 to just 10% as well. Shimamura's indoor farming company, Mirai, has partnered with GE and is looking to set up similar operations in locations around the world, starting with Hong Kong and Russia. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Panama canal expansion: how it works

01:24
The expansion of the Panama Canal will not be ready for its 100th anniversary on August 15 as initially hoped by canal authorities. Aimed now to be completed by June 2015, the project was proposed in 2006, began in 2007 and has cost so far US$ 6.5 billion, Newsweek reported. Connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, the canal currently uses locks in which water flows by gravity and raises ships 26 metres (85 feet) above sea level. Ships can then travel through artificial lakes and channels until they reach another set of locks leading to the sea on the other side. The expansion of the canal will feature new sets of locks that will allow the 81-km-long channel to accommodate even bigger vessels. The new locks will be larger but use less water than the existing ones. Basins next to them will recycle water from the locks as they are emptied, and use this water to partially refill the locks when another ship passes through. Water from the canal’s lakes will also be used to fill the new locks. The new locks will be able to handle ships that are longer, taller and wider. Per-ship cargo capacity will nearly triple, from the current roughly 4,500 standard-container limit to roughly 12,000 standard containers. These changes will make the Panama Canal more competitive with the alternative Suez Canal route, which can currently accommodate much larger ships The Panama began operating in in 1914. It cost about US$420 million and took 40 years to complete. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Poor shaming: 100 kids banned from New York carnival as friends who paid $10 ticket play - TomoNews

01:38
NEW YORK — A public school principal in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York is taking some serious heat from everyone from parents to politicians over her decision to ban 100 kids from a school carnival because their families could not afford the $10 entrance fee. Principal Joan Monroe reportedly decided that allowing the kids who did not pay to enter the carnival fun area would be unfair to the more affluent children who were able to afford the fee. Reports in the New York Post said many of the children who were not allowed to attend were from immigrant Chinese families and instead of enjoying a day of school-sponsored fun, they were required to sit in an auditorium instead. Teachers from the school reported many of the children wept hysterically as they were unable to understand why they were not allowed to enjoy the event, which included a bouncy castle, inflatable slides, kids rides, food, drinks and a DJ playing children's tunes. The school principal later allegedly made a list of all the parents that did pay the entrance fee and send them gift bags. The incident caught the attention of the local school board, politicians and the president of the company that set up the carnival attraction. The company's president, Gary Pincus, said his Send in the Clowns Entertainment company would happily put on a free party for the banned kids, explaining he found it unacceptable that children from low income families were turned away. Other establishments and companies have also offered to host free events for the children that were not permitted to attend. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Space elevator would climb incredible 20-kilometer tower in ambitious Canadian plan

01:42
PEMBROKE, ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian space company wants to build a space elevator that reaches 20 kilometers high. The company is called Thoth and the concept is called the Thoth X tower. The idea is to build a tower with reinforced inflatable sections. The middle is hollow. An elevator car would encircle the tower until it reaches the top. Thoth estimates the tower would cost $5 billion to construct. As a demonstration project, it would build a precursor tower measuring 1.5 kilometers tall. One feature of the project is the wind farm about three quarters of the way up. The 50 turbines could produce 1 gigawatt of continuous energy. That’s enough to power about 700,000 homes. The main purpose of the tower is to provide a take-off and landing platform for spacecraft. If your aircraft takes off at a 20 kilometer altitude, you can get to space in a single stage without the need for additional fuel stages. Thoth estimates this would save 30% on energy costs. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

01:38
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 200 demons live in this Indiana home

01:47
In November of 2011, Lotoya and her family moved into their new home in Gary, Indiana and the strangeness of the paranormal kind started immediately. Swarming flies in winter, strange noises in the night, and even ghost images and levitating children were observed. Lotoya organised an exorcism that looked more like a scene from the movie Poltergeist according to records. When both DCS and Police visited the home themselves, they also experienced some paranormal activity. They noted hearing weird noises on their radios, before the freshly charged devices cut off. They also saw phantoms appearing on what should have been a photo of absolutely nothing. Even still, Lotoya's children were forced into foster care and are officially listed as delusional. One psychologist recommended Lotoya be assessed to "determine whether her religious beliefs are masking her own shortcomings." Still, Police and DCS officials continue to investigate the house. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Eyeball tattoo: Model might get eye removed after eyeball tattoo goes horribly wrong - TomoNews

05:54
ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian model could be losing one of her eyes after a botched procedure left it swollen and purple. The Washington Post reports that months ago, Catt Gallinger had her sclera stained by a tattoo artist who was also her then-boyfriend. The artist was horribly inexperienced. He didn't mix the ink with saline, and used a large needle instead of a small one. The injection went too deep into the eye, delivering too much undiluted purple ink in one go, and resulting in an infection. Gallinger felt intense pain shortly afterward, and began leaking purple ink from her eye. She was prescribed antibiotic eye drops, which only helped spread the infection. Soon, a clump formed around her cornea and her eyes swelled shut. Doctors were supposed to operate on the 24-year-old so they could cut out the lump, then do an amniotic tissue graft to replace lost tissue. But when Gallinger attempted to go in for surgery without sedation in November, she suffered the worst panic attack of her life. The missed operation has put her at a higher risk of eye loss, and though sedated surgery is still a possibility, she claims she's now considering eye removal. Gallinger has been open about her ordeal, and hopes it will serve as a cautionary tale to anyone wanting to get similarly risky procedures done. The Ontario government has since added a ban on cosmetic eye tattoos to avoid more cases like Gallinger's. Future green technology: new solar panels could generate electricity from raindrops - TomoNews

01:28
YUNNAN, CHINA — Scientists in China are producing solar panels that can produce energy from the last source you'd expect — rainwater. In a study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, researchers in China introduced a new type of solar panel that adds a layer of graphene, or carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure, to dye-sensitized solar cells. A flexible layer of indium tin oxide and plastic is included underneath. Graphene has unusual properties that allow electrons to move freely throughout the entire layer. According to the researchers, rainwater contains positively charged ions like ammonium, calcium and sodium. When water binds to the panel's surface, a double-layer of positive ions and negatively charged electrons is created, which ends up producing a voltage and current. Tests of the new solar panels have been able to produce hundreds of microvolts, which is small even compared to a standard AA battery, reports Quartz. The solar-to-electric energy conversion stood at about 7 percent, which is much lower than the 20 percent energy conversion achieved by the best solar panels on the market. So there's a long way to go before the new solar panels become more widely used. But more efficient future versions could mean big things for the solar industry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese billionaire hiding 6% of world’s aluminium in Mexico desert to game NAFTA - TomoNews

01:39
SAN JOSE ITURBIDE, MEXICO — One of China’s richest men has been linked to a massive stockpile of aluminum in the Mexican desert that U.S. aluminum executives say is part of a scheme to game the global trade system, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The stockpile was discovered two years ago when aluminum executive Jeff Henderson hired a pilot to shoot aerial photos of a factory near the town of San Jose Iturbide, 500 miles south of the Mexican border with Texas, the Wall Street Journal reported. There, the pilot found a stockpile of nearly one million metric tons of aluminum, or roughly 6 percent of the world’s total inventory, according to the the Wall Street Journal’s report. Rerouting Chinese aluminum through Mexico into the U.S. allows Chinese companies to benefit from the North American Free Trade Agreement between Canada, Mexico and the U.S., which eliminates most of the tariffs on products traded among the three countries. According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese billionaire Liu Zhongtian, the chairman of China Zhongwang Holdings, has denied the allegations. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Free-range kids: CPS takes children away from couple again in example of parenting police state

01:39
A family in Silver Spring, Maryland could face charges for child neglect for the second time in a matter of months. Danielle and Sasha Meitiv found themselves in the national spotlight in January, after neighbors complained they were letting their children roam the neighborhood unattended. The Meitivs -- who are both scientists -- insisted they were right to allow their children, aged 10 and 6, to play in the park or walk home from school without adult supervision. They were in the process of appealing Child Protective Service's child neglect charge. Then it happened again. On Sunday, Rafi Meitiv and his younger sister Dvora were just a few blocks from home when a police officer pulled up. "The policeman said 'we'll give you a ride home' when we were like two blocks away," Rafi told a Fox 5 reporter. "So we got into the car and then about two and a half hours later -- after sitting in the car for two and a half hours -- he said, 'okay I'll bring you home,'" Rafi said. But the officer took the two children to CPS without notifying Danielle and Sasha. The parents finally received a call around 8 p.m., but were not permitted to see their children for several more hours. "It's 10:30 at night," Danielle told reporters once CPS handed the children over. "They've been missing since 6 o'clock." Danielle said the kids normally carry "free range" badges so neighbors know they're not lost, but the children had left them behind that day. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Renewable energy: CETO system converts sea waves into zero-emission electricity

01:21
An Australian company has been working on a system that uses underwater buoys to convert sea waves into zero-emission energy and desalinated water. Australian firm Carnegie Wave Energy has been developing a system called CETO, which aims to utilise sea waves to generate power. Steel-made buoys that can currently generate 240 kilowatts are the main part of the system. At the Australian naval base HMAS Stirling, three buoys are placed 11 kilometres apart. The buoys are less susceptible to extreme weather damage, while underwater waves are sufficient to generate power. The buoys' pumps drive the high pressure water to an onshore power plant via a subsea pipe. The high pressure water spins the turbines, which then generate zero-carbon electricity. The CETO system can be used to power a desalination plant as well. High pressure water can be utilised to remove salt from seawater through a permeable membrane in a process called reverse osmosis. The Australian company believes that the cost of electricity generated by the CETO system will be competitive with diesel if it is deployed at a large scale. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Loyal dog: Marathon runner reunited with adorable dog who ran the Gobi Desert with him - TomoNews

01:37
URUMQI, CHINA — In a story that could have ended in tragedy, it was a miracle that helped a marathoner reunite with his lost dog in a city of more than 3 million people. Dion Leonard was running a marathon in the Gobi Desert in March when a little brown pup sidled up to him, according to an article written by race organizers. For the entire 250-kilometer run across difficult terrain, the dog kept up with him and never left. Leonard called the pup Gobi, and decided to bring her home to Edinburgh with him. While leaving China and entrusting Gobi with a friend after the race, he began the long and expensive process of taking her home, creating a crowdfunding page to help raise money. But on Aug. 6, while waiting to be transferred to Beijing for the quarantine process, Gobi went missing. Leonard flew in from Edinburgh and looked for Gobi all over Urumqi, but for days he failed to find a solid lead. Finally, a man called in to say he had seen posters of Gobi and found a dog at the park matching her exact description. When Leonard arrived at the man’s house, Gobi ran out and jumped all over him. Netizens in China and abroad were quick to offer well-wishes for the newly reunited couple, with additional calls for airlines to fly the duo home, reports the BBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Largest indoor vertical farm uses 95 percent less water and produces more per square feet -TomoNews

02:17
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — The world’s largest indoor vertical farm is well on its way to producing millions of pounds of food a year while using less water. Last December, AeroFarms Inc. secured $20 million in a Series B round of venture funding, paving the way for its 70,000 square foot facility in Newark, New Jersey, which the company says has the potential to produce 2 million pounds of food a year. Ground was broken on the facility last year and it is now nearing completion. It houses an efficient “aeroponic vertical farm” system that uses 95 percent less water than conventional commercial field farms and 40 percent less than hydroponic farms. The farm uses no sunlight or soil. Instead, the plants are housed on shelves and sprout out of a cloth medium made of post-consumer, recycled plastic. Each cloth takes 24 plastic water bottles out of the waste stream. An aeroponic system mists the plant roots with water, nutrients and oxygen. The closed system allows the farm to use less water. An LED lighting system is programmed to create a specific light recipe for each plant, giving the greens the exact spectrum, intensity and frequency they need for photosynthesis in the most energy-efficient way possible. The programmed lights also allow farmers to control the size, shape, texture, color, flavor and nutritional content of the foods produced. The cloth medium separates the plants from the nutrient-rich mists, allowing for fresh, clean and dry produce to be harvested. Once harvested, the cloth medium can be fully sanitized and reused on new crops. Utilizing the aeroponic and LED systems, the scientific farmers can monitor all the macro- and micronutrients of each plant, allowing AeroFarms to grow a plant in half the time of a commercial farm and with more productivity per square foot. They also tweak and track changes to allow for further improvements to the system. Currently, AeroFarms has two facilities with the larger 70,000 square foot building nearing completion. The AeroFarm system is also customizable. AeroFarms aims to have 25 facilities around the world in five years. The company hopes to build farms in different sizes and configurations to grow food in varied locations with the most efficient yield per square foot, no matter the space. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sea lion jumps on fishing boat, gets rewarded with huge fish

01:21
Who knew sea lions were so fast? Apparently, an adult California sea lion weighing 440 pounds and measuring seven feet in length can reach a top swimming speed of 13.4 miles per hour. So it was a bit of a surprise to see this California sea lion chasing a fishing boat off the coast of Mexico near Rayo, Loma Del Sol. The sea lion is seen swimming fast in the boat’s wake. The humans on board open the back door, allowing the sea lion to board. What happens next is truly amazing. The sea lion is rewarded with a huge fish. It’s almost as though it knew what to expect for its efforts. Treat in hand, the sea lion bids farewell and quickly makes its way back into the ocean. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Biogas: Human waste turned into clean power in Cameroon innovative clean energy project - TomoNews

01:27
BUEA, CAMEROON — Two towns in Cameroon have installed biogas systems to turn human waste into sustainable energy that can provide fuel and electricity for local communities. The project was initiated by Bioenergy-Cameroon, a non-governmental youth organization. Local students, especially female students, are trained on how to install and maintain innovative technology systems such as solar power and biogas mechanisms. According to Reuters, the system includes a septic tank, which is connected to a bio-digester at individual households. Human waste placed in the septic tank is converted into biogas inside the bio-digesters, which release energy into people’s homes for cooking and lighting. Reuters reports that more than 3,000 households and local schools in the towns of Buea and Bamenda have installed the biogas system. The Center for Environment and Development, an NGO in Cameroon, estimates that the biogas project may reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the vicinity by up to 60 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 3D printed battery: new smart inks to produce lithium-ion microbatteries

01:21
Originally published on January 03, 2014 A new kind of "smart ink" developed by Harvard scientist Jennifer Lewis, head of the university's Lewis Lab, could enable traditional 3D printers to print tiny battery electrodes the size less than a human hair. To make the ink, nanoparticles of lithium titanium oxide are added to a vial of deionized water and ethylene glycol. Ceramic balls are used as agitators to break down the particles. The mixture is spun for 24 hours, after which the balls and larger particles are removed using filters and a centrifuge. The resulting ink is placed in a syringe, which is then inserted into a high-pressure dispenser housed in a traditional 3D printer. The custom-made syringe's nozzle tips, as small as one micrometer wide at the opening, allow precise patterning. The ink is solid under normal conditions, but liquefies under high pressure, so it returns to solid form once it leaves the syringe. The ink is used to print the battery's anode and cathode layer by layer following digital instructions. Finally, a case filled with electrolyte solutions encloses the electrodes to create a working lithium-ion microbatteries. Using this technology, microbatteries could be in between other components to help reduce the size of the gadgets. The microbatteries could supply electricity to tiny devices in fields from medicine to communications, including many that currently only exist in labs because batteries currently available on the market are either not small enough or lack sufficient energy to power them. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Town destroys home: Man comes home after 8 months to find Long Island home gone- TomoNews

01:12
WEST HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK — When Philip Williams headed to Florida in December 2014 for an operation, he fully expected to come back and find his Long Island home in one piece. But when the 69-year-old veteran came home in August after eight months of recuperating in the hospital for knee surgery, his house was not where he left it. In its place was an empty lot covered in grass, reports the New York Post. In May, the more than $400,000 home was demolished as part of the town's efforts to eradicate what they call zombie houses, according to the New York Daily News. Hempstead town officials say the house was a hazard, with neighbors complaining of leaks, broken windows, and trash all over, and claimed they followed proper procedure in demolishing the seemingly abandoned home, sending the owner registered letters as early as October. CBS New York reports that Williams was in Florida at the time and denied receiving any such letters, not even having gotten one notifying him of a public hearing to decide the fate of his house in February. He says he could have been notified via phone but wasn't, and is suing the town for destroying his house when there was no foreclosure and the mortgage and taxes were all paid on time. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Self-defense shooting: Uber driver shoots dead armed robber in Florida - TomoNews

08:05
AVENTURA, FLORIDA — An Uber driver turned the tables on an armed criminal, fighting back and possibly saving both his and his passenger’s lives. WSVN reports that the driver had picked up the passenger from a condo in Aventura, Florida just before 6 a.m. on Sunday. The two were on the William Lehman causeway en route to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport when a Dodge Caravan minivan carrying two people abruptly cut them off. A man jumped out of the vehicle and aimed two guns at the Uber driver, demanding he hand over his belongings. Instead, the driver pulled out his own weapon and fired shots at the suspect. Seeing his accomplice dead, the minivan’s other passenger got behind the wheel and quickly drove away. Police later located the vehicle, and are reportedly questioning a person of interest. Whether or not it’s one of the suspects is unclear. The Uber driver was revealed to have a concealed carry permit, and will likely not be charged. His Uber driving days might be coming to an end though, since the ride-sharing app expressly prohibits drivers and riders from carrying firearms when in a vehicle. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Panama Papers: How do offshore shell companies work? - TomoNews

01:55
PANAMA CITY — An anonymous person from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, has leaked millions of documents describing how some of the world's richest hide money in offshore havens. Although the spotlight is currently on Panama, tax havens like Panama exist all over the world. People use them to circumvent regulations that protect transparency, as well as to avoid paying taxes in their home countries. Shell companies are often established in cities and countries that have lax rules governing transparency and financial disclosure, or more lenient criminal laws. Using tax havens isn't always about paying less taxes. Wealth isn't necessarily kept within tax haven countries. Often such places only serve as addresses for shell companies, which exist solely on paper, and are created for as little as US$1,000, reported Vice in a 2014 article. On paper, these shell companies act as the intermediaries that own the wealth, whether that asset is a painting or a Swiss bank account. Because of the complex organizational structure of these shell companies, it's very difficult to figure out who a company actually belongs to. Setting up a shell company is not illegal and its existence is not always for a nefarious reason. A shell company may be established as a way to for one to save up funds to open a business. It may also act as a front for a project that a well-known company wants to keep from the public's eye until it's ready. According to Vox, Apple for example, may have created a shell company called SixtyEight Research as a front for a car project. However, these shells are often used as tax or legal loopholes, as setting up a shell company doesn't require much identification, which allows their ultimate owners to evade scrutiny. UC Berkeley economics professor Gabriel Zucman estimates that there is least US$7.6 trillion kept in offshore tax havens. However, due to the nature of tax havens, it's difficult to know for sure what the true amount is. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kangaroo attack: Jogger gets 35 stitches from vicious mauling by 2m-tall crazy kangaroo - TomoNews

05:54
TEMPLESTOWE, AUSTRALIA — A personal trainer in Melbourne had to have emergency surgery after being brutally mauled by a large male kangaroo. The Manningham Leader reports that Debbie Urquhart was jogging through a bush track in Templestowe Saturday morning and didn’t see the towering threat that was coming her way. A fully grown 2-meter-tall male kangaroo suddenly jumped at her and knocked her down. It kicked and clawed at her ferociously, shredding her clothes and ripping through her flesh. The 54-year-old played dead to try and get the roo to stop attacking, and soon the big boy backed off. Urquhart got back up and walked half a kilometer back home while bleeding from her injuries. She was rushed to the hospital by husband Robert and ended up getting more than 35 stitches. A kangaroo expert told the ABC that this particular kangaroo’s show of aggression was rare, as unprovoked attacks rarely occur. And while the harrowing encounter hasn’t slowed Urquhart down, she says she probably won’t be going near the tracks anytime soon. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Arctic melting: Algae ‘watermelon snow’ melting Arctic glaciers at an alarming rate - TomoNews

01:37
POTSDAM, GERMANY — A recent study published by scientists in Europe found that algae within Arctic snow is making the Arctic’s glaciers melt faster. “Watermelon snow” is triggered by a type of green algae known as Chlamydomonas nivalis, which lies dormant during the winter under piles of snow. When temperatures rise above freezing in the spring, the surface melts and the meltwater bring nutrients to the dormant algae cells, stimulating germination. The cells then release green swimming cells with two flagella to propel them to the surface of the snow and daylight. The algae propagate further as more snow is melted. In order to protect themselves from the increased UV light, the algae produce a red carotenoid pigment that changes their colors to pink and red. “Imagine wearing black instead of a white T-shirt in the sun. It feels much hotter. It is the same for the snow: More heat means more melting.” Stefanie Lutz, lead author of the study and a geobiologist at GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences wrote to the New York Times in an email. Ice and snow have a high reflectivity, or albedo, but the red algae darkens the snow and causes it to absorb more sunlight, reducing the albedo of snow by as much as 13 percent. Scientists estimate that at least 50 percent of the snow surface in the Arctic will be covered by algal bloom during the summer. In addition to the Arctic, watermelon snow can also be found in places including Antarctica, the Himalayas and the Rocky Mountains. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Accidental death: Woman gets arm stuck in clothing drop-off box, dies of hypothermia

05:36
NATALIE, PENNSYLVANIA — A Pennsylvania woman died of hypothermia after getting her arm stuck in the door of a clothing drop-off box while attempting to take out bags from the container. Judith Permar, 56, of Mount Carmel, was standing on a stepstool when it fell over, breaking her arm and wrist and trapping her in the donation box, PennLive reported. “She was fishing bags out and the ladder she was standing on gave way, and she couldn’t get her hand loose,” Mount Carmel Police Chief Brian Hollenbush said. Permar died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia, according to County Coroner James Kelley. Authorities believe that Permar went to the drop-off box around 2 a.m. on Sunday. She wasn’t found until 8:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. Bags with clothes and shoes that had been pulled from the bin were on the ground next to Permar’s body. Her black Hummer was close by with the engine still running, Hollenbush said. Police said they received a report in November last year of a woman driving a black Hummer removing items from the bin. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans.
