Hi I'm Jenn and I am trying to do a pantry challenge for January. What that means is I am hoping to not have to purchase groceries in January and use up what I already have on hand. I do have a large freezer and Pantry in fridges so it shouldn't be too hard but my goal for this month is to try and use up as much of my freezer as possible so I can defrost it and clean it. I am doing this with some other people that are on the frugal family food Facebook group if you're not a member click here https://www.facebook.com/groups/1171483046225309/ Today was a late start so I only had to cook twice well really only once because the first meal was a cold plate of meat cheese crackers . This cold plate cost about maybe $10 but we didn't even finish up all the things I showed in the video I still have enough for one or two people to have a meal of meat cheese and crackers. There is also leftover crackers and olives and pickles at cetera so what was used was not the whole thing. Also all of these ingredients I had bought for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and we didn't finish them and we still have more. Here is the recipe to the hot and sour soup I made http://pin.it/fU0f3gX which I did double the broth, the meat and mushrooms and I used a whole can of bamboo shoots which was about double what the recipe said. Basically I use this recipe and bounced off it as I needed to add more broth because I was adding the dumplings and the noodles too so I just added more broth to cover the noodles and dumplings and a bit more of the soy sauce and chili oil as we like it a little bit spicy. The hot and sour soup cost about $3 for the pork $0.88 for the bamboo shoots maybe a dollars worth of the dried mushrooms and about $2 worth of the other ingredients soy sauce vinegar chicken bullion powder Etc. Just a reminder that these are Canadian prices so would probably cost less or more wherever you live. For my pantry challenge I am hoping to limit any purchases in January - just a few things that we might need like milk or fruit for the kids lunches etc. My goal is to have this at $10 per person hopefully for the month if not at least for 2 weeks. So I am aiming to spend between 40 and $80 instead of my normal budget. I am not counting in toiletry items like toilet paper feminine products or pet food or litter as there is just not enough storage space to stock up like that for more than one bag or so at a time. My usual grocery budget which includes toiletries, feminine products, cleaning and laundry detergent and cat food and litter Etc per month is about 800 to 900 Canadian for a family of 4.

Hi it is Jenn in Kanata, and I'm going to discuss what my plans are for June. I am hoping to cut my grocery budget drastically for this month to use the extra money to pay bills etcetera and keep my budget for this month to $200 Canadian. My normal grocery budget is $800 to $900 so this will be a challenge to just purchase a few things to replenish my stock and to actually use up the stuff in my freezer and pantry and fridge. As my goal is to have one of my fridge freezers completely empty so that it could be used for freezer meals and ice cream and popsicles for the summer months. please comment below with any recipes you'd like me to try this month especially using any of the ingredients you saw in my previous upstairs and basement freezer videos which I will link below as well as in the i-cards.

I had a toothache and was Mel tonight and it was affecting my sleep so I Google natural ways to deal with it I had no Orajel or anything and Tylenol Advil was not really helping but as I researched it and ask for clove essential oil which I didn't have or you could chew some clothes and rub it onto the area and I wanted to show you that it's a very cheap and effective way to temporarily relieve an a Minor toothache

Hi this is Jenn in Kanata, and today we are making fermented pickles and 5% Brine . These pickles taste like the old shop deli pickles the kosher pickles you can get . Period I added some pickle crisp and move them this year as last year they were a little bit soft . They tasted great just weird because Crisp 6 months later. Last year I also waterbath can some of my fermented pickles so I can have some shelf stable and that turned out well again they weren't crisp so I might try some smaller jars and put pickle crisp in them and then once they have done their fermenting I might can them. Feel free to share with me any of your favorite canning recipes as I would love to try new things. I will put the recipe I used below. http://pinterest.com/pin/86201780344742253/?source_app=android

Hi its Jenn in Kanata. Here is a quick video on dehydrating celery for long-term storage. Dehydrating is a great way to save money by purchasing items on sale at cheap price and dehydrating them to be used in soups and stews other dishes at later date maybe in the winter when those same vegetables are expensive.

Here we are at the Parent Info STP - Short term placement at W Ross MacDonald the School for the blind which is located in brantford Ontario. a Short term placement is where students that are being supported in their local school have the opportunity to go to the blind school and work on one skill for example there are art weekends, cooking, camping, sports, music etc. The kids that normally go to the school get flown home or bused depending on where they live. this means the planes are free as they have to go back to the starting point so we get to fly free to the school and lodging and food is provided for free. They bring in specialists and special teachers to teach any special skills or have special guest etc. Its lots of fun and the kids make friends with each other and keep chatting through social media till the next time they meet :)

I'm just doing a quick video on another way to preserve tomatoes by dehydrating them . It is so much cheaper than buying them from store marinated in oil and you can easily do that at home you could take the dehydrated tomatoes put them in a Ziploc bag and throw them in your freezer or put them in a jar on your shelf and they're good for years to come it catches all of the tomato flavor and just releases the water.

Hi it's Jenn in Kanata. Today I'm just posting a mini rant on prescription meds and their cost. We are very thankful to be living in Canada where there are programs available if you do not have Healthcare with your workplace. For example if you are on social assistance you would get drug card that would cover your prescription drugs where you might have to pay a $2 copay service fee instead of what drugs cost. Y husband's health care plan covers I believe 90% of prescriptions and we only pay the difference but the cost of these prescriptions can range from a few cents to hundreds of dollars and I'm just shocked at those Cost Plus each Pharmacy has a dispensing fee of about 10 to $12 if you are on assistance or as a senior you can usually get them down to the $2 copay which were not on either. I was just shocked as my daughter had an allergic reaction and we got a prescription for an EpiPen just in case and that cost if we didn't have insurance would be over $100. We are fairly secure but there are people out there that that $100 could make the difference of paying their bills or buying groceries Etc that's a lot for a one dose thing. So I just wanted to share my experience and maybe start up some discussion amongst my subscribers and Friends.

Hi It's Jenn in Kanata and I am showing you how to use the cans you put up in your pantry to save money and to have a quick healthy homemade meal in minutes. I have what I like to call a working pantry which means I try and use up stuff in my pantry and replace it as I use it, so I always have a few cans, boxes of stuff to last a few months. Having either freezer meals or meals in a jar allows you to save money on ordering out when life gets crazy busy.

Hi it's Jenn in Kanata and I'm shopping my upstairs and basement fridge freezers for things for lunch and supper today and tomorrow as I'm trying to eat out of my pantry and my freezers and hopefully get them more organized with less things in them. As you'll see in the video I am bad at labeling things. I plan to label things better as I put new things in the freezer. I was on a mission to find bacon and I did find some as my husband has been wanting bacon and I thought we had used it all up last week or the week before. But we didn't so I found some more yay. So you'll see some things in my freezer that I'm taking out for some lunches and stuff. I'm trying to use up more of the process stuff so that I can fill the freezers up with more homemade stuff is not as my goal this year is to do more homemade freezer meals.

Hi it's Jenn in kanata. Today I'm making breadcrumbs from leftover pieces of bread the crust off sandwich bread and leftover dinner rolls that got too dry to eat. First I just take the bread and leave it out on the plate or a cookie sheet and dry or put them in the oven to dry when the oven is off and then once I have enough I'll put them through my Cuisinart and make bread crumbs. I can make my own shake and bake with these bread crumbs, or make Italian bread crumbs, or use them in meatloaf etcetera anything you use store-bought bread crumbs for.
